Matt . Tracy, several billion people are estimated to be watching this from around the world later tonight. A lot of eyes will be on rio. Crews have been making lastminute touchups and cleanups. The Opening Ceremony is in americania, the soccer stadium revamped for the world cup two years ago. It proms to be different from anything weve seen before. We got to see a small glimpse of the rehearsals last night but brazil may be keeping much of the ceremony a secret. What we do know, Michael Phelps will join in the ceremony, carrying the flag for team usa. This has to be one of the coolest things ive ever done. Athletes are in brazil to compete in several sports there. 31 sports. If you dont have to go to rio to enjoy the olympics, there are watch parties for the Opening Ceremony tonight. Authorities tell us the man was walking out of a store on south 69th street when he was shot. Police have made no arrests and theyre still trying to determine a motive for the shooting. 6 04. 70 degrees outside. The upper floors of philadelphias criminal Justice Center will be closed today after a runaway elevator injured two employees. One victim, a sheriffs deputy, Sergeant Paul owens, is in critical but stable condition after having Successful Surgery for broken bones in his back. Now heres the other victim. This is beverly smith, a clerk at cjc. Smith was hit by flying debris. She was treated at the hospital and released. They heard what sounded like an explosion on the roof of their elevator car yesterday morning. Officials say Sergeant Owens was found trapped after his elevator shot up through a ceiling near the 13th floor. Authorities are investigating. Monsignor william lynn will be retried on the first of may next year. The judgement case set the trial date yesterday. Youre looking at video of lynn arriving to court in philadelphia yesterday. Lynn is the first Roman Catholic priest in the u. S. Put on trial for helping shield child molesters in the church. The state Supreme Court overturned i overturned his conviction. He was release from jail after serving three years of a three to sixyear sentence. A detective on tuesday reported someone doused his car with gas and set it on fire. Police determined reddick had convinced that person to start the fire. Reddick is on administrative leave and free on bail. New details about a fight in wawa caught on camera. Philadelphia police say they arrested two people in connection with this chaos inside of a wawa in torresdale avenue sunday. Police say a group was arguing with customers and employees, throwing food at them, chasing them and then kicking and hitting them. Detectives say the same group vandalized the same wawa the day before. 23 million worth of cocaine is now off the streets of philadelphia thanks to a series of drug arrests. Yesterday, Pennsylvania Attorney general Kathleen Kane announced the arrest of these six suspects. They said they were part of a drug ring that smuggled cocaine from caribbean countries into the u. S. Authorities say they found hundreds of pounds of the drug in a warehouse and two cars in philadelphia. Theyre calling it one of the largest drug seizures in years. Were hearing from the owner of the trump taj mahal in Atlantic City. Yesterday carl icahn wrote a letter to taj mahals workers. He accused their union of inciting them to destroy their own jobs by staging a strike. Icahn said he lost more than 100 million on the taj since last year and blamed the union for not accepting health care and Retirement Benefits at a lower level than other casinos. The union says icahn helped bleed the casino dry. The taj mahal is the only casino in Atlantic City that did not sign a contract. Yesterday, several Union Workers were still picketing outside of the property. City officials stopped by to offer a hand to soontobe unemployed workers to get them back on their feet. Water quality tests are being done atc philadelphia public schools, all because of lead contamination concerns around the country. The district is retesting the Drinking Water at more than three dozen schools within the city. The project is expected to take about four months. The floating plan grows in slowflowing areas of the river and the recent rain caused it to break up and float towards the dam. The Water Department says its not harmful. Amtrak says it has reduced delays on two local lines by nearly 25 after adding dozens of new trains. Amtrak started adding the electric locomotives in the summer of 2013 to replace an aging fleet. Amtrak Officials Say the engines have new technology that tell engineers about potential problems before they happen which revents them from getting behind schedule. Septa plans to buy the same brand of trains to replace its aging locomotives. The board of direct ares approved 154 million for the new electric trains. We spoke with kerri strug while she was talking to workers in Delaware County and a lot has changed in 20 years. Kerri now has two kids and will be watching with her son who is 4 years old. The first Olympic Games he will see. Long since retired from gymnast inges, she now works with the Justice Department focusing on kids. She often reflects on that moment 20 years ago when she hurt her ankle on one vault and went back for a second attempt, getting the gold for the womens team. This is the message she continues to share today. You fall down, you get back up. And for youngsters, thats of utmost importance, not just literally but figuratively. Were working to get details on his condition and information about the shooting. Federal prosecutors charge nearly four dozen suspects for alleged organized crime including the philadelphias reputed mafia boss. The charges are part of a massive investigation involving new York City Police and the fbi. Alleged members of numerous crime families were among those arrested. Skinny joey merlino is among those charged. Hes accuse d of various items. The nbc news wall street journal poll shows clinton at 47 and trump at 38 . A poll of likely pennsylvania voters by franklin and marshall showed an c11point lead for clinton in pa. William was one of the three people to quit the Berks County Republican Committee this week. Politico reported that nutter is under consideration for both transportation secretary and secretary of housing and urban development. Police and park officials in north jersey are warning runners, hikers and bikers to keep alert after finding booby traps along a popular trail. Police say the discovery of the traps at a park in Passaic County dates back to june. They include broken bottles, placed near rocks, rope tied around logs, barbed wire strung across pathways. There are even wooden planks with screws and nails sticking out of them placed just under the road surface. So far, no injuries have been reported. Police in philadelphia want to know who shot an arrow who hit a house just feet away from where a toddler sleeps. The arrow was lodged into the glass of this second floor window. The son of the homeowner posted these images. The incident happened on wednesday. Theyre not sure what time. Dont go swimming in dumpsters. Its a warning that doesnt really seem necessary but were putting it out there. It sounds weird but its because of this picture, this is what philadelphia is telling residents. The city issued an advisory after this photo sure fashioned. The jat news site billy penn first reported this dumpster pool party. The organizers says they power washed the dumpster, lined it with tarps and filled it with water from the fire hydrant. That water is needed to fight fires. Using it to fill a dumpster, they say, could cause water main breaks. Hurricane earl is down it a Tropical Storm moving across southern mexico. Before it downgraded yesterday, the storm dumped up to 18 inches of rain on parts of belize and guatema guatemala. Winds of 80 Miles Per Hour caused damage in villages and towns. Were so excited, we cant wait. Yes. I think it will be very exciting. It will be something the brazilian Officials Say that showcases the story of their country. This is a story of what the athletes from team usa will be wearing. This is the official Opening Ceremony jacket. You can see the crest here. The usa on the back. They will be wearing these as they parade into the Olympic Stadium this evening. Look for music, look for dancing, look for fireworks and perhaps and nothing is official but perhaps it will be the great soccer star pele that lights the cauldron as the olympic torch makes its way into the stadium. It will be very secure, according to officials. Weve seen it throughout our stay here, officers, also soldiers patrolling not only the venues and the olympic areas but the city and the beach. Theres a strong force, extra 85,000 Army Personnel have been brought in to be a part of the security at these olympics. When you talk to the athletes, talk to the folks visiting here and including those of us in the media, everything has, to this point, felt very safe. Theres a big show of force here. What can we expect from the most decorated olympian at the summer games . Its hard to believe that a guy who is in his fifth olympics has never been a part of the Opening Ceremony. He said it is an honor, will be emotional, its a dream come true to carry the flag. This is the one that phelps will wear. You cant see it because of the tv lights but the crest and usa actually light up. Hell have that illuminated as he walks through the stadium tonight. It should be just fantastic to see him.
