A man is dead after he was shot while sitting on the front steps of a home. This is a live look from lippincot street. Officers heard the gunshots around 3 30 this morning. They found the man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his side. They rushed him to the hospital where he died. So far, there are no arrests. A battle between the Catholic Church and lawmakers in pennsylvania is getting more intense. The church is opposing a change in law that would give child sex Abuse Victims more time to file charges. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live for us this morning at the archdiocese of philadelphia. Help us understand what this is about. c the church spent more than 2 million recently trying to fight this kind of bill. Archbishop Charles Chaput is urging area catholics to fight pennsylvanias version of this bill, house bill 1947. It passed in harrisburg in april. It extends the statute of limitations on claims of sexual abuse. It would allow past victims to file claims up until theyre 50 years of age. Right now the limit is age 30. It extends it 20 years. It would eliminate the criminal statute of limitations on future sex abuse cases. Theyll hold you accountable for your actions, specifically for children who have been abused and we dont see any justice served. The supporters there, the philadelphia archdiocese are calling this bill an attack on the church. Archbishop Charles Chaput, he sent a letter this weekend through the area parishes saying the church is committed to helping survivors of abuse in their healing. He calls this destructive legislation. And that area catholics will end up bearing the financial burden. The letter call on parishioners to contact the state senator, tell them their thoughts and the bill is expected to be heard in the state senate within the next couple of weeks. A small electrical fire at Embassy Suites forced guests on to the street. After about 25 minutes they were allowed back inside but the elevators were out. Some guests tell us they climbed 25 flights to get back to their rooms. And new this morning, a 17yearold is recovering after being shot. Police say he was in a car with friends early this morning when two men approached them with a gun. He was shot when he tried to drive away. Nbc 10s Pamela Osborne is live this morning outside st. Christophers hospital for children in hunting park. Pam . Yes, youre right. Despite being shot in the shoulder, that teenager was able to drive himself p the hospital. He is in stable condition right now. Just to give you a little bit of perspective, the scene where the shooting took place is three miles away from where st. Christophers is. The victim went to pick up a friend in the 5600 block of lawrence street, his friends got into the car and as they were getting ready to pull out of a parking space, two men in disguise walked up to the car. Police say one of the men tapped on the window with his gun. He told the victim this was a robbery. The driver tried to get away. Police say the shooter ran off the victim and based on the ballistic evidence, the shooter was firing as he chased down that fleeing car, leaving three spent shell casings spread out on the highway. All three shots hit the drivers side of the car. There were a total of four people inside of that car. Were told the three passengers were not injured. Theyre talking to detectives right now. We also know police are in the process of looking at nearby surveillance cameras to see if perhaps they captured any images of the shooter or the second suspect with this man. However, we will feel this less humid air mass moving in to our area by tomorrow and then this time stamp has us by tomorrow evening. We begin with nbc 10s matt delucia with the battle brewing between the Catholic Church and lawmakers. Archbishop Charles Chaput is asking catholics to join in the fight. House bill 1947 passed the house back in april in harrisburg and essentially what this bill does is extends the statute of limiting as on claims of sexual abuse. Now, the bill has its supporters but the philadelphia archdiocese is calling this bill an attack on the church. Now, archbishop Charles Chaput sent out a letter to area parishes, went out to parishioners, says that the church is committed to helping survivors of abuse and their healing but calls this destructive legislation and that area catholics will end up being put up with the theyll have put up with the burden of the financials of all of this. Officers found the man lying on the sidewalk around 3 30 this morning. They rushed him to the hospital where he died. We could find out today if the family of that boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure at the cincinnati zoo will face any charges. The 17yearold gorilla dragged that boy. Zoo staff killed the animal to rescue the boy. You could hear loud sirens around the Limerick Nuclear power plan the today. The siren test will last three minutes at 2 00 this afternoon. Its one of two fullvolume tests done each year. Utility crews are working to get the last remaining customers without power back online this morning.
