Right now Philadelphia Schools are open on time but in the past half hour weve gotten 30 School Delays, including lower Marion School district. We have a complete list on our nbc 10 app. c speed restrictions are in place on several roads, including 495 in delaware both north and southbound. There are several cancellations at Philadelphia International airport. This morning we have Team Coverage from our team of first alert meteorologists. Lets start with chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz who is tracking whats happening right now. You said some of this is more leak a spring snow . Yes, thats right. We have marginal temperatures, 32 degrees or higher with the snow, the flakes are big, wet, sticky type of snow. Totally different type of snowflakes than what we saw with the blizzard. Its a totally different setup. Were not about to get hit by any kind of monster storm or anything. Look, there are accidents every morning when its raining. The roads are wet. There will be issue even with wet roads. Take it easy as you go in. Lets see what it looks like. We have reduced visibility in at least parts of the area where the snow is coming down a little bit harder than in others. This is outside the station here. At city avenue. The lower right is more of a side road, a little bit of snow accumulating there. In the parking lot, im 95 south, visibility is still decent. We can see the lights in the distance. The cars moving okay. Thats around indication of the main highway but as you saw with cyndey in evesham township, this could stick. The darker the blue is, the heavier the snow. We have little bands where it gets heavier. We had a heavier band go through abington a little while ago. Now its picked up again a little. The more significant snow is in new jersey. There we are at evesham township. If anything, the snow will taper off in the next few minutes as you can see on the radar. Weve been going neighborhood by neighborhood. Im focusing in on the philadelphia area right now. You can see the snow is coming down. The future radar shows that will continue well into the commute, at 7 30, the snow may lighten up but the temperatures, theyre getting colder. That will lead to more accumulation, primarily on grassy surfaces. Much of this area are now seeing grass covered with snow and youre probably going to need some time to clear your car off this morning. That, too, is a colder surface like the grass thats been sitting out all night. That cools faster than the roadways. By 9 00, snowc comes to an end and the temperatures will be climbing. Well be in the upper 30s, low 40s as we break through the snow and get sunshine. By then, the accumulation will have occurred on the grassy surfaces. Its snowing now, light accumulation of 1 to 2 inches, Delaware County and into philadelphia. Farther northeast you can expect to see more snow on the grassy surfaces. Its all coming in, between 9 00 and 11 00. Stand by for a snowy commute and the temperatures that will be hovering just above that freezing mark. We could see slippery conditions on the side streets, some of them are snow covered though its not much snow right now. By 11 00 well be drying out. At 2 00, the temperature, 41 degrees. Keeping a closer eye on the traffic scene, first alert traffic reporter Jessica Boyington. Thats right, bill. We are moving into new jersey right now. Mt. Laurel on 295, right around route 38. Were starting to see some accumulation on the roadways. Where the cars are moving through, you can see the snow is beginning to stick on the shoulders. The majors are starting to see that accumulation, definitely in the Center Median and the shoulder. You want to watch the off ramp. As roadways are slippery, the conditions are messy. This is mans field township. Were starting to see accidents in. Slow speeds earlier than normal. This is the new jersey northbound. There is an accident with Left Shoulder blocked right now. No huge delays but we also have reports of flooding. On this part of 95 northbound around route 291 where that flooding is, its not a slow go. We want you to go slow, again, around exit 13. Vai. Thank you, jessica. As our meteorologists overnight and through the morning have been telling us, southern new jersey will get most of the snow this morning. Right, 2 to 4 inches. We have a layer of snow, a good coating of snow and slush out here on the roadways. It happened instantaneously, just as soon as we hit that mark here this morning. The salt and plow trucks are out. I just found out from Burlington County, they have about 40 assets on the road. Camden county has twice that many as their salt and plow operations. We told you the cars would be covered in snow. They are. We have ac good coating, aboutn inch on the ground as we speak. As you get up, this is what you can anticipate. If if you can, go to school and work late sotoallow the plow trucks to get out ahead of you. Burlington county to philadelphia where the changeover to snow started before 4 00 this morning. It goes without saying, just dont do it while youre driving. Now your nbc 10 first alert weather. A wet morning commute for most. As you saw, a few places do have slippier roads. Morning rush is bad when even we have rain. The snow reduces the visibility, making it tougher for the morning drive. Lets take a look at the radar. We have heavier bands, the darker blues moving through parts of the philadelphia area, especially lower montgomery county. Then across the river in new jersey, along 295 where cydney long has been in evesham township. Abington, weve seen little bursts of heavier snow. The temperature marginal in some of the northern suburbs. Heavier snow coming up through kent county, delaware. That goes up to dover into Cumberland County. Theres the evesham township where the snow should bec tapering off in just a matter of minutes. The wider view shows the back end of this system in the lower lefthand portion of your screen. Its a limited area. Its moving fairly quickly. Sunrise is about to occur. The suns rays will help melt things as well. It takes a low visibility to produce a heavy snow, enough to cause more significant accumulation. Theres mt. Holly, less than a mile now. Again, thats accumulating snow. Millville with the lowest visibility. That means the heaviest snow in the area. This is more of a new jersey issue than a delaware or pennsylvania issue. The temperatures are marginal, 36 in philadelphia now, near the freezing mark in much of the rest of the area. Lets head over to meteorologist bill henley with more on what to expect. Glenn, were taking a closer look at Burlington County where cydney long reported deteriorating conditions. Theres evesham township. The heavier snow just passed through there. Theres more snow on the way as the temperatures fall. Still above freezing as you mention, glenn, in philadelphia. It has dropped to 33 degrees in pennsauken and audubon. Haddonfield at 32 degrees this morning. It is a cold start for voorhees and glenn gloria. Youll see accumulating snow not just on the grassy surfaces but the had irsure faurs harder. By 7 30, the snow is still coming down and still accumulating. Though starting to lighten up in salem county and it is steadier in tabernacle. The snow continues through the morning. It is mainly a moderate to light snowfall, especially farther to the west. By 9 30 in the morning, we could see tapering off already in the salem area. Theres still snow in store for millville and tabernacle. You can expect to see 2 to 4 inches on the ground in Burlington County, into camden and gloucester counties and Cumberland County in that 2 to 4 inch zone. Isolated amounts could go even higher than that. When we come back, take a closer look at the northern and western suburbs and get you through the morning commute. Rather dangerous out there. We have a bank of cameras that Jessica Boyington watching to check on the conditions. Shes focused on the schuylkill expressway. But traffic is still moving fine. I95 in south philly. We can still see the lights in the far distance. The visibility is not low enough to cause more significant problems on the roads. Because the temperature is above freezing in philadelphia. You can see on the radar, the left side of your screen, its breaking up a little bit. Were seeing lighter blue colors, were see something areas with just the map color. That is the system winding down from west to east. The darker colors are clearly in new jersey for the most part. We see one b nd going through parts of bucks county, lower montgomery, even in philadelphia and camden and gloucester. Theres one going right through abington, cheltenham about to get a little burst of heavier rain, northampton, bucks county about to get some of that. You can see the heavier area near milford. Delaware moving across delaware bay into Cumberland County and that area in evesham township that was much darker blue, now a little bit lighter. Thats where cydney long has been. The back edge of the storm, as you can see in the lower left, its a relatively small system and moving quickly. Its not going to last all day. Visibility is less than two miles in some places. Thats where the snow is heavy enough to accumulate on grassy surfaces. Not in reading or allentown. No visibility restrictions. That is the reason its not going to accumulate there. Temperatures are above freezing in philadelphia and along the i95 area, near freezing elsewhere. Meteorologist bill henley has more on what to expect. You mentioned the lightning up north. This is the first area that saw snow when it changed from rain this morning. As temperatures have been running colder at the freezing mark for blue bell and lafayette hill. We have other speed restrictions in other areas. Ill go over them when i come back. Thanks, jessica. Were seeing on the latest radar changes in this system right now. Ill draw a line there and to the left of that line, the system is already winding down. To the right of the line, we still are in more significant snow. We have you covered from every angle. First we go to chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz with us. This system seems more serious in new jersey than in pennsylvania or extreme northern delaware. Extreme southern delaware is in with the heavier snow, too. In the philadelphia area here, right outside the station, city avenue, main road, just wet. Cars are traveling just fine. Visibility is okay. But weve seen pictures in new jersey that are quite different. Were seeing holes in the radar. We need a salad area of blue with darker blue inside of that to be real significant snow. From wilmington westward, this is really tapering off out there and to the right of that line that you see, we still have a storm going on. It is tapering off. Chester county, northern New Castle County on the left side of the screen, flurries compared to whats going on, even in philadelphia right now. And so that drier air starting to come in from the southwest and that may cut off the snow even more in philadelphia. And the temperatures above freezing here anyway. Were not really seeing the significant accumulation right in philadelphia itself. The temperatures generally above freezing in the city, marginal in the suburbs. Meteorologist bill henley has more on that. Its all about location as you mention. It is going to be lightening up quickly north and west, the shore has hours of snowfall ahead. Cape may is showing snow on the radar. On the ground, no accumulation yet. Weve seen the temperatures come way down since we went on the air. We went on the air at 3 30 to cover this storm. What to expect, hour by hour, shows the snow coming down in hammonton, galloway, Atlantic City, reaching into wildwood. The temperatures will be near freezing, cold enough on the surfaces for accumulation. By 10 00 in the morning, well see it lighten up. By 11 00, it starts to come to an end. By then, 2 to 4 inches will be on mainly grassy surfaces. It will make for low visibility and slippier roads as we go through the morning. When i come back in a few mcrutes, well take a closer look at new jersey inland just outside philadelphia to monitor the conditions there. Jessica boyington is following your first alert traffic. Were keeping an eye on new jersey here as well. Theres a lot of slippier spots, accidents and speed restrictions as well. Heres the garden state parkway. Theres a possible entrapment there as well around mile marker 7 over in cape may county. So no huge speed restrictions here at least because of that accident scene. You can see it blowing sideways past our camera at nixon drive in morristown. Heres route 202 right around lime kill pike. You want to be careful around curves and off of the off ramps. Now it is coated with a thick blanket of snow. You can see the drivers moving through. They are using caution. It began sticking as soon as we hit the freezing mark. We have seen police out at the tolls as well as salt trucks on the moves, both on the roadways, also, across the street at the shoprite. If you can delay that ride to work or school, certainly not a bad idea as this snow piles up. Thats exactly when the morning traffic will be piled up. Really a good idea to use added caution. It is messy out here. That is the latest, live in marlton, cydney long, nbc 10 news. Meanwhile, the snow has been falling for several hours in center city. Nbc 10s Rosemary Connors is live at broad and walnut. Do you have accumulation on the grassy surfaces . We dont, vai and tracy, its starting to look and feel more like rain at least in the past five, ten minutes or so than what we saw anc hour ago. On broad street, traffic is moving just fine. The roads are clear. Nothing has stuck to the ground. Thats the good news here for drivers. Weve been checking in with the philadelphia Streets Department and they tell us theyre alerting everybody to a Winter Weather advisory thats in effect through the morning. They are treating the roads as necessary. So far, so good. Philly schools are on time and on schedule. Its really coming down in south philadelphia. This is 95. It started snowing here just after 2 30 this morning and the snow, not really sticking to the major roads. Theres a lot of traffic. That will keep them clear. Many of the side streets, grassy surfaces, cars sitting out overnight are seeing the accumulation. Its starting to taper off to the west. You can see wilmington starting to get a break from the snowfall. While its still coming down in limerick, snow snow. Into philadelphia and northern Burlington County where cydney long is, thats where were seeing the steadier, heavier snowfall this morning. The snow will continue for the next couple hours in the philadelphia area. It will continue at the shore where the temperatures are in the 30s and later this morning, thats when well see the snow come to an end. The heaviest ams still expected at the shore. Inland well see lighter amounts. Delaware, central and southern delaware, 2 to 4 inches of snow, especially farther to the north in the the inland areas. This is where were seeing steadier snowfall. The grassy surfaces will wind up with 2 to 4 inches. Some spots, there are bands that come through heavier, locally higher amounts are possible. For philadelphia, grass is covered in much of the immediate philadelphia area, especially in the suburbs, not so much in center city where Rosemary Connors is reporting. 1 to 2 inches possibly, mainly on grassy surfaces. There are roads covered. Even farther to the north, there is covering of the roads. Conditions are improving rapidly. Theyre barely snow coming down in reading and allentown. The lower the visibility, p heavier the snow. You can see it under a mile now in mt. Holly. Thats steadier and heavier snowfall there. It has deteriorated in millville. Theyre reporting half a mile visibility. It still comes down there. It will be accumulating. In philadelphia, look how quickly it moves out. By late this morning, well see vastly improving conditions for the i95 corridor into Burlington County. The snow will still be coming down into the later Morning Hours but tapering off as well. The temperatures will be climbing. Theres a possibility before the day is done well see breaks of sunshine. We still have the commute to get through. More accumulating snow. I just had to check in with the schuylkill expressway to check in with the drive times. We are seeing major slowdowns, especially westbound. Look at the cameras around city avenue. A big slowdown. Were up to about a 20minute drive time. Heres westampton township. Were starting to see big slowdowns in all of the majors, even without the added volume and accident in area. We have a vehicle that spun out on the 42 freeway, big slowdowns in either direction. Thats abnormal for the southbound side. Were seeing that with added accumulation of snow. Route 42 around the black horse pike is where the vehicle spun out. Approaching that see, its a little bit slow also. Heres route 73 in berlin around jackson road. This is a common picture around a lot of the intersections. Snow covering those. Crews have started to treat the roads now that the changeover has moved through. The visibility in dover has improved. Its winding down there. But its still pretty significant across the river in new jersey and in camden, gloucester counties, northern Burlington County, its coming down hard enough to continue to accumulate. Also toward the shore we still have, perhaps, a number of hours left of the snow there. You can see the whole system winding down from top to bottom. The visibility tells us how heavy the snow is.
