One week ago, friday afternoon when the snow started falling across the region. We all know that turned into the blizzard of 2016. We now know the blizzard ranks as the fourth worst snowstorm to hit the northeast since 1950. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration made that announcement yesterday. The agency classified the storm as a category 4 which means it had a crippling effect. Nearly 24 Million People saw at least 20 inches of snow. And the blizzard is creating serious concerns about a winter bloodshotage. Nbc 10s Deanna Durante is live in center city this morning with what you can do to help and deanna, this is a pretty serious problem for the red cross. The red cross has said it reached emergency levels. During the blizzard they helped a number of people, displaced family, 16 of them, more than 44 people who needed placement because of issues during the blizzard. They responded to nine different fires as well. Thats just the blizzard weekend. Since the beginning of january, the red cross says that its blood supply has been dwindling because people dont want to come out in the cold or because of the winter storm. Here in philadelphia, they canceled more than 30 blood drives, just over the storm weekend. Youre looking at video supplied by the red cross. That video shows what it looks like when theres a full blood drive. Red cross Officials Say when its cold, snow on the ground, people cancel their blood drives and they just dont show up. c the Severe Weather over the past several days and really since january 1st nationwide has caused a really major blood shortage. So were trying to ensure we have enough blood on the shelves to be able to continue to support our hospitals. We have to collect nationwide about 14,000 pints of blood each day. And that picture youre looking at supplied by the red cross shes volunteers and workers responding during the blizzard. Donald trump was noticeably absent but there was still a lot of action between the other candidates. Rubio directly accused cruz of being willing to say or do anything to get elected. The truth is, ted, throughout this campaign youve been willing to say or do anything in order to get votes. This morning, military Officials Say fighter jet tests caused the sonic booms that caused concern for people across the eastern shoreline. A Navy Spokesperson says its the result of supersonic testing off the coast that involved two fighter jets. We talked with a woman in Atlantic City who was left guessing about the situation. All new at 6 00, new jersey state environmental Officials Say 19 beaches sustained heavy damage during the blizzard of 2016. A report released yesterday by the state department ofc Environmental Protection says the beaches sustained major erosion. It states that the most severe sand losses happened in Northern Ocean county on long beach island. 6 32. New video into nbc 10. Philadelphia and police and fire rescue crews rescued a passenger trapped in a car that overturned on Potter Street just after 3 30 this morning. Police tell us the driver was speeding, lost control, slid on snow, hit a pole and turned it on its side. Someone broke a window, cut the drivers seat belt and then the driver ran off. Police are still trying to find that driver. Police officers throughout the county are adding a lifesaving tool to their tool belts. County leaders tell us they are the first in the world to use it. Drew smith is live at Ridley Township Police department. Officer s across the area hae been using this lifesaving drug. Here at ridley township, they had to convert the injectable version into a spray. The fda approved this all in one nasal spray tool. The Company Making it has u. S. Offices in Delaware County. Ridley township was the first to use narcan as well. According to the National Health data, heroin and pain killer overdozes have risen sharply in the past few years. In response, more departments are carrying this narcan. Police chiefs have reported Success Stories all over our area, especially in camden with at least 150 saves and here in Delaware County, theyve had 170 saves to date. Departments here say they will become the first in the world to use this new tool. Officer hartnett has undergone several surgeries since he was shot in the arm three times during that attempted assassination. About two dozen nypd officers made the trip for the fundraiser. To shake his hand, say thank you very much for doing your job and to understand that were here for you. The nypd officers presented officer hartnett with a plaque on wednesday. The fraternal order of police organized the fundraiser saying hartnett still needs several more surgeries before he can fully heal. 6 36. The socalled affluenza teen, ethan couch, is back in the u. The 18yearold drop his deportation fight earlier this week was whisked from that immigration facility in mexico city here to ft. Worth. The acting fire commissioner has ruled out arson but investigators are still looking for a cause.
