The phillies released a statement saying all of us are saddened to hear of darrens passing. From the day we drafted him until today he constantly earned our respect and admiration as both a player and a person. He spent 14 seasons in philadelphia. Yeah, he left as one of the most beloved phillies of all time. Csns Marshall Harris looks back at the man we came to know simply as dutch. Reporter on the field, he was strong. Drafted in 1980, daulton spent parts of 14 seasons behind the plate for the phils, making three allstar teams. His finest achievement in philadelphia, the 93 season. Daulton was the face, the voice and the driving force behind macho row, a team of misfits that captivated the city and captured our hearts. His championship dreams were realized four years later on the florida marlins, the kansas natives heart remained in philadelphia. Darren daulton reporter he was enshrined on our wall of fame in 2010 and transitioned from baseball to broadcasting, including on Comcast Sports net. But in 2013, his life changed. I couldnt figure out what was going on. I was having trouble explaining a little bit of baseball. Reporter the diagnosis, an aggressive brain cancer, surgeons removed two tumors, daulton refused to make his fight with cancer a solo fight. He started the Darren Daulton foundation, dedicated the providing funding to those who suffer from brain tumors, brain injuries, and brain cancer. All the while, cementing a lasting legacy. I never really burnt any bridges. Ive always been asked out for dinner. As far as personal accolades and stuff like that, i was never that type of personality. Thats what im probably most proud of. New this morning, hundreds of teens swarm a philadelphia neighborhood after a planned cookout ends in chaos. Police were pelted with bottles and rocks as they tried to get the crowd to go home. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live in East Germantown outside the rec center, the second time in a few weeks they had those problems there. Tell us more. Reporter right, tracy. The last time there was a large group here outside the Lonnie Young Rec Center here in East Germantown, police had to break that one up as well. Lets talk about what happened last night. Philly police tell us around 7 30 in the evening. A crowd of about 400 teens and young adults acting disorderly. They say throwing bottles and rocks at police. Three people were arrested, one officer was hit by a bottle but was not injured. And there were also two vandalized police cars. Police tell us this is nothing new to them, but what is concerning is that the crowd seemed to be growing in number. The event took on a following through social media, being spread around that way, being advertised as a cookout part two. Likely a reference to the last time there was a big gathering here outside this same rec center that happened last month in midjuly, same kind of thing with a large crowd here, police say causing problems in the streets nearby. And, of course, police are still investigating this incident. The event lasted for a couple of hours, while police try to get the crowds to disperse, had a helicopter in the air at one point, but at this point, everything has cleared up. For now, live in East Germantown, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. New this morning, Philadelphia Police trying to piece together how a 13yearold boy was shot. Officers found a boy on tarot stre street. Police couldnt find any evidence there. The boy should be okay. A man faces a long list of charges for a crime spree that took him from philadelphia to south jersey and then back again. Police say Marquan Pitts carjacked an off duty septa worker at gunpoint in Spring Garden early yesterday morning and said he filled up the gas tank at the Farley Service plaza in atlantic county. And while there, he showed his gun to the attendant while claiming to be a Police Officer. Police say pitts then headed back to south philadelphia, where he crashed and tried to make a run for it. I cant even imagine what was going through his mind. No one was hurt, but several cars were damaged in the crash. Happening today, jury selection begins in a trial of jeffrey sandusky, the son of former penn state coach and convicted child molester jerry sandusky. Hes facing child sex charges. Investigators say he asked two underage children to send him nude pictures and perform a sex act. Hes been suspended from his job at a prison in pennsylvania. His father is serving 60 years in prison after being convicted for 45 counts of child sex abuse. A shoprite at the jersey shore will reopen today following misfire that started on the roof of the store in Egg Harbor Township yesterday afternoon. Employees and customers dropped everything to rush out of the store. The manager told us there was minimal damage inside the building and no one was hurt. Today,he t Streets Department will begin construction on Chestnut Street in west philadelphia. Over the next three weeks, there will be intermittent lane closures and parking restrictions between 34th and 45th streets. Crews will install bike lanes and painting new lines on the road. It is light in dover, there are some heavier downpours we have been watching moving through northeastern maryland. Those will be streaming into the area at times. May see a little bit of a break this morning before the main area of rain moves in. That one, once it moves in, will stay with us for most of the rest of the day. Then during the Late Afternoon hours, heading into the commute, may see a little bit of improvement for wilmington, philadelphia and trenton. Lighter rain in the suburbs and delaware. But the steadier, heavier rainfall and south jersey and delaware will continue. During the Late Afternoon hours that were more like through see showers and thunderstorms along with them. Even a potential at 7 00 this evening for thunderstorm activity from philadelphia to the south. Thats at 7 00. And then by late this evening, well see it finally moving out of the area. Nurses and doctors who are already working at a fast pace had to move even faster. We had we got to a situation where we thought we might be overwhelmed. Our shift manager instituted a code orange. We had nurses and staff come down from the rest of the hospital, able to clear out the rest of the er so we could take care of the critical patients. All of the victims survived.
