Back here in philadelphia, a 14yearold High School Student is dead from a case of bacterial meningitis. Nbc 10s katy zachry is live outside School District headquarters in spring garden. Katy, i know we spoke with some parents and theyre understandably nervous about this. Reporter they are. Their kids are nervous as well. Thats why the district is hosting a meeting later tonight at 6 00 at the school in north philadelphia where this student attended. We also spoke to a doctor who says its rare for others to come down with this deadly illness, even if they were in the same class as this teenager. The district has not released we know he was in ninth grade at George WashingtonCarver High School in north philadelphia. He died yesterday. The school will open on time today. Bacterial meningitis infects the fluid around the brain, though its not usually deadly. Those who do die from it are often immuned compromised or have a preexisting injury that puts them at greater risk. You have to be very close with the person, which is why bacterial meningitis can spread in populations that live in close living quarters. Kissing would be a common way to spread it. The group made up of business, civic and labor and faith communities will give details of the Citywide Coalition this morning. Mayor jim kenney is expected to be there. The grupp says it wants to lead the fight for a 3 cent tax on sugary drunks in order to invest more in education and fight poverty in the city.
