You also talked with a group of Catholic School students at the papal prayer service. Talk about people who were camping out for hours and excited. A lot of us noticed that as we watch the coverage but the pope seems so energized wherever he goes, people in new york were marveling at that despite his rigorous itinerary he always seems animated. The crowds fed off of that energy yesterday. Especially this group. The teenage students, these girls you see there, attend a Catholic High School in new york city and through a lottery they were lucky enough, won a spot on the steps of st. Patricks cathedral, the job, greet the pope as he walked up the steps. One girl told me more than a blessing she wanted a hug from the pope. So emotional like you dont see the pope all the time. You go to vatican city you wont see him there either. Hes coming to us. You cant help but sbhil their excitement. At the cathedral the pope was greeted by new yorks governor, mayor and congressional leaders. Coming up in addition to the poping in new york there is another reason for security. First thing tomorrow the pope is leaving new york, flying here to philadelphia. Scheduled to land at 9 30 so were about 28 hours away. Ahead of his arrival parts of the city are shutting down. You know this is coming. This morning exits on the vine street expressway closed include to 23, and if you use public transporation these are closed. Suburban station on the Regional Rail line, the fifth and 15th street stops on the market frankford line, city hall on the broad street line and the 15th street trolley stop. The secure perimeter set up in the traffic box is in effect this morning even if you have one of these temporary parking placards you still have to have your vehicle off the street and in a designated garage or you will be towed. Youll have to pass through metal detectors to get into certain parts of the city this morning. Monique braxton joins us with these extra measures that people will start seeing soon. Reporter good morning. Im on a quiet street now here in center city but this will be one of the entry points for the the ben franklin parkway. Look at the dozens of concrete barricades here lining the streets. Just down in the distance, you can see another form of barricade. Moments ago a secret Service Agent told us that thousands of people are going to be snaking through the metal barricades, entering the parkway. And in the distance where are you see what looks like a white tent, under that tent are the magnetometers, thats where people will enter the parkway after they are properly screened. In less than an hour the ben franklin parkway east of 20th street to 12th will be accessible only to those pedestrians who are screened by a metal detector. Today is the day with under five square miles of center city and West Philadelphia will be off limits to vehicular traffic. Eightfoot high fencing has been erected to close off secured areas. At 8 00 this morning, authorized vehicle access roads are closed to nonemergency traffic. Then at 6 00 tonight, the socalled Center City Traffic Box goes into effect. As you know that means people who live here but outside of the event can drive within the zone but if you leave you may not reenter until monday afternoon. By 10 00 tonight secure perimeters around Independence Mall and University City take effect, major roads, highways, and the bridges will be shut down. And as you know, the ben franklin bridge is going to be transformed to a pedestrian bridge. They are looking at video hoping to see the thieves. Fuch a man will be sentenced today. Richard plots pleaded guilty but mentally ill to murder and attempted murder. The shooting at Mercy Hospital last summer left theresa hunt dead. The charges carry a mandatory life sentence but since he has a long history of Mental Illness that could factor in at sentencing. Really important to highlight the fact the vine street expressway is still open right now. I dont want to scare people from accessing it at this point. You can see here from the cameras around 24th street as they go out, westbound lanes we dont have a bad drive time yet. Were two minutes 95 to the schuylkill. You can see that moving along here. The westbound side thats headed toward the schuylkill expressway if you have to get to 30th street station. For the vine street we have several exits around broad, too 3rd, around the ben franklin parkway and eighth street. The entire vine street expressway will close later tonight. That will be about 10 00 p. M. So right here the full stretch from the schuylkill expressway to 95. So be prepared for that to happen later on. If you do have to get to work right now. Currently no problems. Thats something were going to focus on. Southbound from wood haven to the vine street expressway, 14 minutes, still no problems on the schuylkill expressway, watch for the Spring Garden street exit that is closed with Police Security check poychblt we have a 12minute trip eastbound.
