We had earlier construction with only one lane getting by on the southbound side. Right now were watching 95 at cottman avenue. Seeing a little bit of movement here which is good news. It looks like the drive times are moving back down just a bit about a couple of minutes or so. Southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway, back to 25 minutes earlier, we were in the 30s. at 30s as well. So all traffic thats moving towards center city really at a slowdown right now. The northbound side looking a bit better. Abington, watch for this accident on shelmire and perry street. We had an earlier opening over the tacony palmyra. Some residual delays because of that right now. Theres a schedule opening for the Burlington Bristol scheduled for 6 10. Now to the breaking news weve been following for the last half hour. It directly impacts month are than 100,000 students across pennsylvania. Faculty at 14 state colleges and universities are now on strike. Nbc 10s Monique Braxton is live at west chester university. Monique, walk us through what that means for students and faculty. As you know, the governor urged faculty to return to the classroom today. Weve just learned that is not happen. Look over my shoulder where you can see the faculty have hit the picket lines here at west chester university. More than 17,000 students are affected. They have been frantically checking their emails overnight. The big question was, would their teachers who have been working without a contract hit the picket lines . And yes, they have done so. Weve been 15 months without a contract. It took this to make it happen. Negotiations are ongoing but were hoping that this will put pressure on the system to get a resolution. Last night we stop by Cheney University where students told us they feel caught in the middle of the labor issue. And then over at kutztown, one teacher told us, this cowl be the first strike in faculty history. Weve learned teachers are also upset about new rules, like cutting back on sabbaticals and changes to research and online education. A prolonged strike could severely impact students, affecting grades for the entire semester, even financial aid. So Governor Wolf issued this statement, which reads in part, avoiding a strike is paramount because a work stoppage will be devastating for the state system. Most seriously, a strike could drive a loss of students, which would further exacerbate an already precarious financial situation for the state system. The governor also went on to cite what happened to Temple University following its faculty strike in 1990. He says it took years for temple to recover its student population. As you can see in the distance, faculty have already hit the picket lines. Students have also come out to find out whether they do have classes today, only to learn they do not. Well be moving now between now and 6 00, down to where the faculty are walking the picket line and have more for you from that location. Live for now, from the campus of west chester university, Monique Braxton, nbc 10 news. All right, monique, thank you. 5 35.
