We can tell you weve been haefrihaefr i haefring lightning, thunder claps throughout the morning. Weve been tracking severe thunderstorms as they race through the suburbs, move through philadelphia. The worst of it is in new jersey, a tremendous amount of not only rain but wind, hail detected by the radar and lightning strikes numbering in the hundreds of strikes this morning. The heaviest rainfall and potentially some hail is now in camden county, right near gloucester. The heavy rainfall and the mt. Laurel area, these storms are on the move. Theyre moving to the east at 35 miles an hour which has them in pemberton at 5 34, minutes from now and browns mill at 5 43. They move offshore just after the 7 00 hour. Theyll be gone. Well be dealing with another threat, the threat of dangerous heat for pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. Were still under a first alert. The high heat normally were seeing temperatures this time of year in the upper 80s. It will feel like 100 to 108 degreesc this afternoon. The heat and humidity could lead to more storms later today. Ill have that with the futurecast hour by hour when im back in a few minutes. Lets see what all this rain and thunderstorm activity is doing to the morning commute. Jessica boyington has your first alert traffic. Thats right, bill. It is making it pretty messy indeed. We are starting off on 95 around academy road. A vehicle facing the opposite direction here. It looks like it was a slippier drive for this guy where his vehicle is facing the wrong way on 95. This is headed southbound where were seeing slowdowns, 20 minutes from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. Traffic is at a crawl there. Were also seeing reports of an accident scene on 295, right around route 130. Our cameras in west deptford township. That accident scene not causing delays. Its not actually in this particular camera angle. Its on 295 northbound around exit 22 in west deptford township. Thats at 6 42. Watch out for that there. The schuylkill expressway of course were seeing some delays. Theres an earlier accident, overturned vehicle still in place on city avenue. 25 minutes into center city from the blue route to the vine street expressway, speeds into the 30s as well. Starting today, the political world will resolve around philadelphia. Were live at the Wells Fargo Center where the democratic National Convention will begin the process of naming Hillary Clinton as the partys president ial nominee. Opening day gets started at 10 00 this morning with several caucus and council meetings. For this afternoon, the convention will officially gavel to order. The list of speakers includes Hillary Clintons former democratic rival bernie sanders, First Lady Michelle Obama will deliver the keynote address to close out the evening. Well give you details of what the first lady is expected to cover in her keynote address tonight. Sources tell nbc news mrs. Obama will speak about the role the president plays in the lives of children and why she believes Hillary Clinton best filled this role. The first lady will also touch on the values we share as a nation. c and of course were used to seeing the sixers and flyers, sometimes concerts at the Wells Fargo Center. This is a total, complete transformation. This setup is different than what i saw in cleveland last week. The size of the stage is the biggest difference. A lot of the delegates will be in the stands, not on the floor. Nbc 10s keith jones gives us more. Im keith jones on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center which has been transformed to host the democratic National Convention, the biggest change, this gigantic stage weve been told its much larger thats its counterpart at the rnc in cleveland. The background changes, its dressed in blue,ed podium in the middle where Hillary Clinton will speak, where president obama will speak, also Michelle Obama and former president bill clinton will speak. Theres teleprompters on either side. That rises and falls into the stage. One other big change here, in cleveland, all the delegates sat here on the floor. Here in philadelphia, its different. Some will sit here like the pennsylvania delegation. Up in the stands is where some of the other states are represented like new mexico there, missouri, south carolina, and on the other side, what you cant see her because theres a barrier, new jersey and delaware. New jersey is seeing the worst of the storms. Its coming down at a rate of almost 3 inches an hour in a few spots not as widespread as it was. Heavy rain and quite a bit of lightning, though not as numerous, the strikes as it was just a short time ago. Its a sign these storms are starting to die out. Theyre moving to the east at 35 miles an hour which means by 7 30 this morning, almost completely offshore, the last few showers moving through ocean county, new jersey at that time. And then we get a break from the storms. But the heat and humidity that we felt the last few days will likely fuel another round of storms this afternoon. Look at the futurecast, 4 30 this afternoon, the lehigh valley, through the suburbs and into philadelphia, those storms will be racing through the area and a potential for more drenching rain, frequent lightning, strong gusty winds, possibly damaging winds and the potential for hail with those storms. It will be moving through the area until 7 00 or 8 00 this evening. Ive issued a first alert for afternoon storms today for the lehigh valley, the pennsylvania suburbs, philadelphia and new jersey between 2 00 this afternoon and 8 00 this evening. Theyll move in from west to east. Those storms will bring strong, possibly damaging winds and the potential for more heavy downpours like weve seen this morning. Fueled by the heat and humidity that youre going to feel during the day today. 77 degrees right now. That storm has brought the temperature down 4 degrees in the last few minutes. Look at the warmup, 91 degrees. Most of the morning it will be completely dry. Its this afternoon during the heat of the afternoon, what it feels like 105 in philadelphia, thats when more storms are likely. For the suburbs, youll see sunshine before the next round of storms takes shape this afternoon. The temperaturesc soar in the suburbs and the lehigh valley. It will feel like 102 degrees. Thats at 2 00 this afternoon. For new jersey, most of the morning will be quiet. One these storms move through, theyre starting to die out. Theyll get sunshine, it will feel like 104 at 2 00 this afternoon, then the storms start to bring the temperatures down a bit. Upper 80s, will feel like its in the 90s, even on the beach at the shore. Youll see those lateday storms roll through during the evening hours at the shore. For delaware, afternoon storms are a possibility. Between these hours, 108, the 2 00 feels like temperature for delaware. So i have issued a first alert for dangerous heat as well. For pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, for today and tomorrow. The feels like temperature, thanks to the hot and humid conditions will feel like 100 to 108 degrees. Im first alert traffic reporter, watching the schuylkill expressway, around city avenue, eastbound right now we are passing an overturned vehicle situation. A lot of Police Activity on the scene. It looks like theyre starting to get most of this accident scene over into the righthand shoulder. We were blocking most of the lanes for the past 45 minutes or so and headed eastbound into center city, has been down to one lane. Already seeing big delays on the schuylkill expressway before traffic gets out there for the morning. West deptford township, an accident scene on 295 southbound around exit 22 which is route 642, the left lane is blocked there. Moving over to the p. A. Turnpike, headed westbound, an accident reported around willow grove. As for mass transit, septas route 102 trolley is dealing with reports of high water in the area. Now theyre shuttle busing passengers from the boulevard and mcdadce. At least two people are dead and more than a dozen others are wounded after gunfire at a club in florida. Well keep you updated. Theres been another mass shooting reported at a club in florida, this time ft. Myers. Two people are dead, they are both men. 14 to 16 other people have been hurt in this deadly shooting. Police say it started around 12 30 this morning at a nightclub that was hosting a party. The shooting happened in the parking lot. Police are also right now at two other scenes, a nearby home and along a street in the area. Three people of interest have been detain. We are gathering more details throughout the morning and well bring you the new information as soon as we get it. You canc also tap the nbc 10 a for instant updates. Today septa adds positive train control to its Chestnut Hill east line. The safety feature will regulate the distance between trains and make sure collisions dont happen at track crossover locations. Ptc also prevents speeding and keachs workers on the side of the track safe. It is being added on all of septas Regional Rail lines. There will be no strike for new Jersey Transit workers. The record newspaper out of north jersey reports that unions representing conductors and engineers signed their contracts with the company this weekend. They were the last of 11 rail unions to do so. The unions had been working without a contract for about five years. This is a good story. A birthday surprise for a local boy is getting a lot of attention on facebook. Take a look. More heavy rainfall later today, after these storms clear out, were in for high heat and high humidity. The like i hadhood of the hottest day weve seen so far. These storms have been dying down. The radar is detectingc hail. This hail is very impressive, especially in northern new castle county, in parts of camden county, the radar is detecting hail the size of golf balls coming down. Marble sized hail in much of the rest of the area. Hail, gusty winds, winds gusting to 60 miles an hour and a lot of lightning. Heavier spots. Look at the lightning. Its firing back up around winslow and waterford. West of woodland seeing the worst of the storm right now. The severe thunderstorm warnings have been dropped. Theres quite a lit of punch left in the first round of storms this morning. The storms have dropped the temperatures some but not a lot. 77 degrees in philadelphia. That is feeling like its 79 degrees. 83 is what it feels like in atlantic city. A warm, muggy start and a hot and humid day today. Well see temperatures climb through the 80s into the 90s this afternoon. 95 degrees at 2 00. Thanks to the elevated humidity, it will feel like 105 degrees at the hottest this afternoon. This will not be the end of the heat. The humidity again will be high tomorrow. Well be stormfree tomorrow after another round of storms later today that could turn severe. Well get a break tomorrow. 76 in the morning, 94 on wednesday. The numbers will slowly come down this week but most of the week well be into the low 90s, thursday and friday and a chance of more storms for those days. We finally get a break from the high heat, the 90s saturday and sunday win typical july heat for saturday and sunday. Most of this accident scene where there was an earlier overturned vehicle has been pushed over into the righthand shoulder. Only one lane is getting by eastbound into center city.
