Is on the run this morning. New information about something that happened six miles away. Police believe they stopped another attack after killing five suspects wearing suicide belts. Youre looking at the second scene south of barcelona, investigators now believe they stopped that plot by killing those suspects and it is connected to the attack in barcelona and we just learned that the belts they were wearing were fake bomb belts. Here is a map that shows you, you see where it is in relation to barcelona, an explosion wednesday night farther south could also be linked. This is just a look at part of the panic in barcelona after the first attack. Police say a van jumped a curb on a popular street and accelerated, traveling about 600 yards. The driver zigzagged through the street, left in its wake for 13 victims dead now. Hundreds injured. And a street full of smashed businesses. And we just mentioned, the driver still on the loose. Police did arrest two other suspects in connection with this incident. The selfproclaimed Islamic State says the attackers are its operati operatives. A woman from the United States recorded this video as she ran from the scene. We heard what sounded like gunshots. And we saw hundreds of people rushing through. We spoke with a family from Atlantic City vacationing in barcelona. Theyre doing okay but they say safety is their top concern while theyre in the city for the next four days. President trump tweeted about the attack. Here in philadelphia, police have already increased security measures to make sure an attack similar to that one in spain doesnt happen here. Yeah, you can see those stepped up measures last night at the popular event in center city. Past Events Police have used cars and large flowerpots to corden off areas and protect people. Last night, they had buses to block the street from franklin square. A counterterrorism expert said terrorists target european cities because there are more unprotected open areas there. They disguise barriers to prevent those attacks. What youre seeing more and more are concrete and steel barriers being erected to try to make them as visually attractive as possible. Philadelphia police say that they have been using vehicles and flowerpots as barriers since 2007. Breaking from overnight, someone vandalizes the frank rizzo statue with spray paint. They left a message on the monument that has become the center of controversy following charlottesville. Protesters have been calling for its removal. Matt delucia joins us with more. The person who did it is still on the run. Tell us about that. Reporter police have a good idea of who that person is, based on the vehicle description and the witnesses here at the time. Now, a supporter of frank rizzo came here, not long ago, and put a drape over the statue. You see that right there behind me. Now, the area is cordoned off, a large area around the statue that is sectioned off and police are now here watching over this area. Take a look, this is what it looked like earlier this morning after a man got out of a car and spray painted the words black power on the statue. Philly police tell us there were many witnesses here. Police say that they hope to catch up with this person later on today. The man also spray painted another message on the ground and just to bring you up to speed here, some controversy as of late over this statue as some accuse the former mayor of racism and some including councilwoman called for the statue to be taken down. I just spoke with the woman who came here to put that towel over the statue, here is why she did it. Very upsetting that people will come down to do this kind of stuff and it needs to stop. Folks out here this morning have been questioning how this new vandalism could happen, considering there had been a Large Police Presence and barricade around the statue earlier in the day yesterday. But those barricades had been removed, but as you can see now, the barricades, this Yellow Police caution tape, is back up around that statue. For now, live in center city, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. That statue is still in place. There are others across the can country that have been removed. President trump is responding to that removal of several confederate statues and removal. Happening today, the mayor of charlottesville, virginia, will make an announcement regarding the citys statue of confederate general robert e. Lee. Youll remember last weekend white supremacist groups marched to the statue and protested. Plans to have it moved. A counterprotester was killed and three dozens were injure d. Trooper burk bates piloted a chopper, he and jay cullen were monitoring the protests when the helicopter went down in some woods a few miles away. Investigators looking for the cause of the crash and do not suspect foul play. Tonight, chester county, an antihate rally is planned for phoenixville. A borough councilman helped organize the rally. May and bridge streets. It is billed as a march for equality in response to the white supremacist marches in charlottesville last weekend. Calling for an end to social injustice thats the mission of eagles star Malcolm Jenkins as he upheld his protest during the playing of the anthem. He began the gesture last season as a response to Deadly Police shootings of unarmed black men. He and teammate chris long criticized President Trump for his response to racially charged violence in charlottesville. Long is from charlottesville. He did not hold up his fist during the anthem, but he did put his arm around jenkins. I support malcolms right to protest. I support people fighting for equality. Communities, low income, communities of color, different interactions with the Justice System than that of our comparts. In the light of everything happening, just continuing that conversation. I think you can see some of the equipment there still. Out of view of the camera, it is in the slowing anything down right now. Cars are moving by smoothly. Also want to go back to something ive been talking about on the schuylkill. A downed tree and a westbound lane. It was blocking one of those lanes. That has since been cleared. Severe thunderstorms as we go into the afternoon hours. The first of the showers and thunderstorms moving through the Lehigh Valley. Thats a live view from easton. The storms have not reached easton yet. But look at what is going on in berks county, into lehigh county, and now northampton county, passing lehigh. Heavy downpours with the storms. These are slow movers. The storms are moving to the northeast at 25 miles an hour. It is going to take time, make it into the east. Light rain is just starting to move in. We have seen rainfall coming down very heavy this morning, isolated pockets coming down of more than 5 inches an hour. This is just the first round of showers and thunderstorms. There is more wet weather building to the west. It is going to be here this afternoon and especially this evening. Hour by hour forecast, mostly cloudy skies. Some breaks of sunshine, but clouds and moisture and temperatures in the 80s going to fuel those storms this afternoon. First alert goes into effect at 2 00 in the afternoon. Thats when we see the first isolated showers and thunderstorms popping up. But more widespread rainfall is going to start developing late in the afternoon as an approaching cold front pushes into that very moist air. Upper 80s for philadelphia. Wilmington with a break or two of sunshine in wilmington. Suburbs might hit 90 degrees and storms roll in, with heavy downpours during the 7 00 hour. Most of that activity is to the northwest, moving to the Lehigh Valley and just entering into the suburbs. Were on it our way to a stormy evening at 8 00 this evening, look at those downpours moving through delaware, philadelphia, south jersey, and those showers will still be going during the late evening hours. Someone shot a man twice in the lower back, got to the hospital in a private vehicle in critical but stable condition. Police are holding the vehicle at the hospital and looking at Surveillance Video taken in the area. While most of us have crossed the drawbridge before but imagining crossing one on the road beneath you, it starts to rise. Thats what happened to a family vacationing at the shore. They were traveling to cape may in the middle of thorough fare bridge when the bridge started to open. They feared their car would fall backwards or worse into the water below. I said to my us, i think the bridge might be opening. I dont know why. I dont know what made me do it. I dont know how it went from my brain to my foot, an immediate reaction. Here is his reaction. To bucks county, a catholic schoolteacher convicted of child rape is out of prison ten years early because this week a judge threw out bernard schiros conviction. Theyre from bristol township. The judge said there were questions about his accusers truthfulness. In the Lehigh Valley, the Allentown City Council is ramping up efforts to remove the mayor from office. Last night, Council Members his trial is set for january. Now, allentown is out with its closing days for city poolz and spray parks this season. Today is the last day to enjoy a dip at the mac pool. The urban pool closed last friday. Jordan, bucky, boyle and old fair ground pools and sprayers will all shut down after labor day. Clouds have built over philadelphia. Felt the humidity increasing last night. It is even steamier this morning. And heat and humidity combine to give us showers and thunderstorms. Showers are rolling into the easton area. He no heavy rain there yet, but it is not far away. Thunderstorms and 75 degrees in the Lehigh Valley. Look at those lightning bolts popping up and heavy downpours now. Just moving through allentown. This is slow moving system. These showers and thunderstorms are moving to the northeast at just 25 miles an hour. It is going to take some time to make it to easton by just by 5 30 this morning. Heavier rain and potential for lightning moving into the easton area. This will not be the end of the rain during the day. Showers to the west. It is all part of the same system that will impact our area. Not only this afternoon, but some of the heaviest weather for our area is likely to come in during the evening hours. It clears out over the weekend. Because of its coming system, we issued a first alert for strong storms. This affects the entire area, the worst of it starting in the afternoon. 2 00, thats when well start to see some isolated thunderstorms pop up in the area. And then heavy rain coming in later and into the evening hours today. Heavy downpours are possible, flash flooding, not out of the question. Damaging winds, even isolated tornado is possible and hail with these storms as well. Here it is, hour by hour, future cast showing those storms moving through the area. During the afternoon and evening hours, that line of storms, thats the cold front pushing into that humid air that is going to dry things out for the weekend but give us storms into late tonight.
