Nbc 10 was first on the scene overnight as flames and smoke forced people out into the pouring rain when an Apartment Building caught fire. The fire started around 1 00 a. M. At broad and wharton streets in south philadelphia. Matt delucia is there with more. Matt, what do we know . The fire is out. Behind me, theres still a lot of firefighters here at this scene. No one was inthese homes at the time but a firefighter was hurt battling the intense flames and smoke. This is what it looked like as we pulled up to the scene around 1 15 this morning. The fire had been burning for a little while at this point. Heavy flames through the second and third floors through this row home on broad street, south of wharton, the 1300 block of south broad street. It took firefighters about two hours to get this under control. One firefighter was taken to the hospital. Its unclear on exactly what his injury was. The fire commissioner told us he is stable and expected to be okay. This happened just as a heavy storm was moving through the area. Its unclear what caused this fire. That is under investigation. Neighbors around here tell us it happened fast and spread fast. I jumped out of bed, looked out the window and there was a guy laying the horn on, half in his car, screaming, wake up, wake up. People were just knocking on all the doors along the block. Unclear at this point how many units in this home were damaged. The fire did spread as you can see from this live picture, there are homes to the left and the right. Row home here on broad street. Weve seen firefighters working in all these units to make sure this fire is indeed out. Now it appears, though, some of the operations here are starting to wind up and the folks are getting ready to leave, taking their break right now. We also asked the fire commissioner aboutc how the he from the past few weeks has taken its toll on firefighters and medics in the city. He said it has been rough.
