Thats when we could be severe thunderstorms take shape with damaging winds and large hail is possible. Heavy rain could produce flash oo so far, we have seen a few sprinkles. Nothing severe about that. You could see scattered showers in the pocono mountains where first thing this morning we did have thunderstorms. The main threat is from a line of showers that is moving through western pennsylvania. Its approaching State College and williamsport. Its moving to the east at 30 miles an hour which will put it in williamsport just after noon. Its most likely to impact us this afternoon and moving through the philadelphia area during the afternoon and each commute. Before it gets here, were steaming up and heating up. 84 right now in philadelphia. Winds out of the south at 17. In the 80s in the suburbs and new jersey. You can see clouds building over the Lehigh Valley. 85 right now. The chance of storms popping up at 2 00. Thats when we could see the first of the strong storms and that threat continues into well into the afternoon hours. Through it all, its going to be getting hotter. Upper 80s this afternoon with a high humidity it will feel like in the middle 90s for philadelphia today. Into the 80s for most areas at the shore. Likely to stay dry during the day. Evening storms are likely for the jersey shore and delaware beaches. We will have more in the next 15 minutes. Jury selection in the Seth Williams corruption trial is under way. Philadelphias d. A. Is accused of taking bribes in exchange for illegal favors. Pamela osborne is live for us in center city. Reporter it all depends. Experts we spoke to say at best it could take a day. But that jury Selection Process could stretch into tomorrow as well. That was Seth Williams on his way into court this morning. He was greeting cameras awaiting his arrival. His attorney adding they were feeling good going into the federal corruption trial. Seth williams is facing 29 counts relighting to bribery and corruption. Prosecutors say he took trips and gifts in exchange for favors. Lets talk about the jury. More than 100 potential jurors are part of the panel. They will be asked what they may know or have heard about the case prior to today. They come from all over north hampton, bucks and beshrks coun to name a few. Another thing is their ability to serve. This trial is expected to go on four four weeks. One of the things they will attempt to weed out are jurors that cant commit to being a part of this fourweek long process. They say that it could cause any hardship. Thats another thing that theyre going to check for as they go through the potential jurors. I will be back in a half hour for another update. Happening now, a doctor whose wife was murdered five years ago is in court on unrelated charges. Prosecutors are trying to show why dr. James kaufman should stay in custody. Prosecutors showed body camera video of the doctor waving a gun when investigators served a search warrant on his medical office. The warrant is not related to the unsolved murder of his wife in 2012. The judge in the bill cosby trial could revisit his decision not to release the names of the jury members. Media outlets have challenged this. The judge gave prosecutors until today to decide if they want to oppose the release. There are concerns interviews could impact a retrial. Its not clear why jurors could not reach a verdict or how close they came. The District Attorney is promising to try the case again. Page 6 of the New York Post is reported cosby knew all along that he would get a hung jury. The paper says cosby reminded those around him during court breaks that he only needed one juror to be on his side. He called the Conference Room where he went for his breaks his dressing room and the courtroom his stage. Cosby also allegedly claimed he turned down an offer by the District Attorney for a no jail deal that would require him to register as a sex offender and wear a monitoring bracelet. The prosecution denies any offer was made. Philadelphia police are looking for whoever shot and killed a man on house arrest. The victim was in a chair in front of a house in West Philadelphia when someone shot him numerous times. Police believe he was the intended target. They say he was wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet. An assault in philadelphia leaves a man fighting for his life. He suffered a head wound around 2 00 this morning on north 18th street. He is listed in critical condition. Investigators say witnessed who know the victim said they saw and heard nothing. Pennsylvania state police are trying to figure out how the young son of a firefighter got ahold of a gun. The 4yearold child died after shooting himself in the face yesterday at a home in monroe county. His mother was a freemansburg fire company. The Philadelphia Teachers Union will vote on a contract days after reaching a tentative deal with the school district. If Union Members approve the contract it would run through 2020. We are expected to learn details following the vote. The superintendent told us the new agreement could mean more stability for the district, teachers and the students. We have a warning this morning for six south jersey communities after a sewage spill. A malfunction caused the spill yesterday. Theres another risk at the shore, thats the rip current risk which has been high. Its still high and expected to stay high this each. Be careful right along the coastline. The rip currents will be strong. Inland areas, a different threat. Severe thunderstorms. We see the first showers starting to pop up. The threat of the strong storms will continue into this evening. It will clear out overnight tonight. Then we will get a break from the humidity and see cooler temperatures tomorrow. Its warm. 84 degrees. But it feels like its in the 90s in delaware and south jersey. 84 right now in south jersey climbing. Didnt get that cool overnight. We saw morning temperatures in the 70s, upper 70s. Its ten degrees warmer than when we went on the air at 4 30 this morning. It will feel like its in the 90s this afternoon. We are starting to see activity on the radar. Not in the immediate area but you can see showers to the north. Now we have our first Severe Thunderstorm Warning that has gone up to the west. Its not in our area yet. But thats very heavy downpours with a thunderstorm thats moving to the east at 40 miles an hour. Severe thunderstorm warning for this area which is to the west of our area until 12 15. Those winds are going to be strong. They have been clocked at 60 miles an hour based on radar. Puts it in Williams Town at 11 38 and porter 11 44. It has some ways to go. Its heading to the northeast. It will miss our area. This is the main event. Look at that line of storms. Hef very downpours. No Severe Weather just yet. But thats a as we go into the afternoon as the heat and humidity will combine to fuel those storms as a cold front races into the area. Here is your hour by hour. This is just after noon, the storms to the west. By 1 00, get closer to berks county and Lehigh Valley. During the afternoon, from 1 00 to 3 00, thats when we will see the heavy downpours and potentially Severe Weather move into the Lehigh Valley. Then the suburbs and then philadelphia. Most of it is destined for the suburbs, philadelphia into delaware and new jersey right around the time of the evening commute. This is 4 30 this afternoon. This latest computer model shows heavy downpours in south jersey, accelerating and moving through south jersey and then to the shore during the evening hours. This is 7 00 this evening. First the rip current risk at the shore and then strong storms later today. The risk will be greatest for damaging wind and lightning. We could see some large hail as well. With heavy downpours, flash flooding is a possibility with the storms moving through. Through it all, its a steamy one. Upper 80s in philadelphia at 1 00. His law license has been suspended. Right now, the jury that will ultimately decide his fate is inside right now. Both sides going through questions for those potential jurors. Navy has identified the seven sailors who died when a container ship hit the u. S. Warship off the coast of japan. We are hearing from the mother of one of the fallen sailors. Reporter the uss fitzgerald is badly damaged. Its crew and the community here mourning the seven sailors who didnt make it. Their loved ones are what make the navy great. This loss is something we all feel. Reporter today, we know their names, their faces. Among them a 19yearold from virginia. And this young man from california. His father, a retired navy man. His mother didnt worry about her son. He knows whatever situation i know he can get out of it. But this time he wasnt given a chance. Reporter how an advanced warship with sophisticated equipment and a watch crew could collide with a cargo ship more than three times its size is the focus of several investigations. There are conflicting reports about the time of the crash. Marine traffic records show the cargo ship made a series of course changes and a uturn before heading toward tokyo. The commander suffered a head injury. Now he is facing questions about how a collision could happen in calm weather. Repairs could take up to a year. The star board side is crushed and gashed. It is fuel for the storms to come. 84 now in philadelphia. The suburbs and Lehigh Valley has warmed up five degrees from this morning when it was 80 for most of the morning. An unusually warm start. 80s in south jersey and delaware. Temperatures will climb higher but fall short of the 90 degree mark for most neighborhoods. Graduate hospital is at 91. Myowers, you can see showers that so far have been avoiding most of us. Were seeing that rain and those storms pop up in the pocono mountains. We have seen some downpours now just past easton and heading to the north. Theres one area of severe thunderstorm activity thats seeing heavy rainfall. The rain coming down at a rate of more than five inches an hour in a very small area. Thats on the move. I dont think any one area will get five or six inches of rainfall. We will see some heavy downpours this afternoon. Right there, thats the main act thats going to be coming in for the afternoon hours. This is a cold front sweeping into the area. That passes tonight on the other side of the storm, thats the cooler, drier air that you are going to feel tomorrow. Not today. That cold air pushing into the warm moisture, thats producing showers and thunderstorms. Give us severe storms right on through this afternoon. We could get a lot of rainfall in a short period of time. This is 4 00 this afternoon. This computer model is showing rainfall amounts of more than an inch in reading and allentown. Watch how quickly it will change. Thats 4 00 this afternoon. Philadelphia is reporting, not much more at 5 00. Watch what happens between 5 00 this afternoon and 6 15. Up to more than an inch and a half of rain. Thats the potential for rainfall. I dont think everybody will see that much. With that kind of rainfall p potential that could lead to flooding. The Severe Weather for this afternoon, its an enhanced risk for our area from lancaster through allentown and towards the shore. The stores are going to produce heavy rainfall. That will give us flash flood risk. Damaging winds, risk is high for this afternoon. You will likely see lightning as well. Possibly large hail with these storms popping up this afternoon. A smaller risk but not completely out of the question for a tornado. Thats today. Come tomorrow, its all out of here. The cold front passes by. Less humid conditions. Temperatures come down. Still warm but much more bearable than the last few days. The humidity drops even more on wednesday. Morning temperatures in the 60s and highs in the 80s. Another warming trend. Upper 80s thursday. Dry with partly sunny skies. The heat and humidity will build for friday and saturday. Near 90 both days. A chance of showers on friday. Showers and thunderstorms as another cold front saturday. That will once again bring us relief for sunday. The temperatures come down. The humidity will be dropping. Low 80s monday, tuesday and wednesday. Thats where we should be this time of year. Its one of those days that these storms, these severe storms are likely to come through our area. I saw Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management said tie things down. Good idea. If you have your trash cans, its on a day like this that they go down the street on their own along with your lawn furniture or anything else that might float away in very strong winds. We are tracking some strong winds in the area with a severe thunderstorm that is in central pennsylvania. That is just the beginning of whats to come. You can see clouds building over wilmington. Thats a shower thats moved through easton this morning. The heaviest downpours are yet to come. You can see showers have started to pop up in Chester County and delaware, too. That watch, that batch right in the center of the screen, thats a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. We can expect more of those popping up this afternoon. You can see its a line of showers that extends way into west virginia. Its approaching hagerstown, maryland. Those will be here this afternoon. Its active with those thunderstorms in moving into maryland. We have a first alert weather for all of the neighborhoods from noon to 11 00 tonight. Theres a threat you will run into showers and thunderstorms even well into the evening hours. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain could lead to flash floods today.
