Philadelphias department of licenses and inspections is looking to hire two dozen new building inspectors. Are you cut out to do the job . Here to tell us more is karen and Maria Quinones sanchez, who is a chair of City Councils lni committee. Karen, let me start with you, llr youre looking to fill 24 jobs, but this comes in wake of the deadly Building Collapse from three years ago. Tell us more about that. So one of the things that happened in the aftermath of that event was quite a bit of scrutiny on the department and it became clear that certainly one of the issues was that building inspectors had case loads that are way too high and that there needed to be more building inspectors available, because of the construction boom that were experiencing in the city. Tell me what kind of qualifications youre looking for. So there are two ways to qualify. One is to have six years of Building Trades experience, and Building Trades is a big classification, because were talking not just about plumbing and being an electrician, but also being an airconditioner and heating mechanic, doing skilled construction labor, like working with a jackhammer or other heavy but small equipment. So i would encourage people to check out the actual list and see if they qualify. Youre hiring all 24 people, all at the same time, or are they being hired a little bit at a time . We are going to do a major push and get them all hired as quickly as possible. Councilwoman quinones sanchez, lni clearly has had Public Relations issues over many things, but tell me about some of the improvements youve seen so far. Immediately after the tragedy, city council activated a special committee. We came up with a list of 70 plus recommendations. Mayor nutter at that time came up with some additional executive orders and established an oversight border, which mayor cunningham has kept operating, which will allow to us really scrutinize not only our training, our internal capacity. Weve boosted the lni budget and brought it up to better standards than we had in the 90s. And as carrie says, we have a housing and a development boom, which is good. And we want to make sure that we keep our city as safe as possible. And there is a boom. There are cranes, i see cranes all over the landscape there in center city, and so this will fall in line with what the building boom lni is really committed to being the Public Safety agency that it needs to be. And Code Enforcement is important, but we want to be as preventive as possible. And the stakeholders, whether its the contractors association, the builders association, everybody, all the stakeholders have really come together and say, how do we make this agency work for everyone . And if youre interested in becoming a building inspector for lni, you have to apply by this friday, july 1st. All applications must be done online through the citys website. Well put a link up on our website at nbc10. Com, so you can go there and find out. Karen, councilwoman quinones sanchez. Youre losing your son . Off to college.
