Amy goldberg was chief ottrauma at Temple University hospital. When i walked in and saw the number of patients that we had already on site, and the numbers that we were getting, it was rather impressive. Temple says 54 victims were treated that night. More than any other hospital in the area. Ten different hospitals took the injured passengers and temples chief medical officer remembers the questions of that night as he drove to work. Do we have enough Emergency Rooms . Is the blood bank ready . One year later, some of the victims are still recovering. And some are permanently scarred. They literally feel it was for some of them, every breath they take, but some of them, every step they take. Some survivors may never walk again. Attorneys tom kline and robert say the victims and families want accountability on the part of amtrak and the trains engineer. There is a deep feeling that this should never happen again. But temple and other hospitals train constantly in case it does. Almost immediately after that first night, we started assessing how our response was and how we might respond differently to future events. Hoping it never becomes reality. Theres a campaign under way to save lives and its using your ugliest prom pictures. Its called the ugly truth campaign. Donate live p. A. Is behind this push to let people know just how important it is to be an organ donor. Katy zachry explains. It may sound like a leap, ugly prom pictures and organ donation, but donate life p. A. Is about getting the ugly truth out there. That ugly truth, according to jan with the gift of life donor program, is over 8,000 people in pennsylvania alone are waiting for lifesaving organs. A person dies in this state every 18 hours, waiting for one of these critical transplants. So the organization wants people to post their ugly prom pictures of any ubflattering picture to social media with the uglytruth to raise awareness and encourage people to become organ donors by going to donatelifepa. Org. The number one myth is if i put the donor designation on my drivers license, Health Care Providers wont save my life. And that is the furthest thing from the truth. Ask any Health Care Worker out there, they dont know whats on your drivers license and theyre committed to doing everything to save an individuals life. As you can see, several of us here at the station answered the call for this worthy cause. This is me in my junior prom. Tracy davidson shared a picture of her from her senior prom, and vai sikahema insists this is his senior prom, but i swear he seems like hes 25 or 28 in this picture, way too old for a senior in high school. Still, that is my favorite. Katy zachry, nbc10 news. Thats not fair at all, glenn. She took a swipe at me. Well, back when i had my senior prom, that was before cameras were invented. So i dont have any pictures of that. We have sunshine and warmth that have finally returned. Its been a long time since we have seen that. Thats allowing the temperature to just shoot up. Were only 60 degrees tuesday. 66 yesterday. At least 77 today. The way its warming up could go even higher than that. Tomorrow, clouds and showers will prevent the temperature from going up as high as it did today. You can take a look at the bottom of the screen with the sevenday forecast to see how many more days we have in the 70s coming up. And you can also see the clouds hanging in parts of delaware. Extreme south jersey, but theyre not making a lot of progress to the north and east. I think the places that have sunshine now are going to keep it. The live radar only showing some of the ground clutter and that is about it. But we do have some showers and thunderstorms back by memphis. That system is a long way away. Thats the one that could affect us on saturday. We have one coming in on friday. We have one coming in on saturday. Heres the futurecast. We go through the afternoon, things are pretty quiet. Tonight, partly cloudy skies. Tomorrow, start off with clouds. That will help keep the temperature down. Then some showers come in. Possibly before noon. Especially lehigh valley, berks county, Chester County, places like that. Then we could see even some thunderstorms during the afternoon. And not late in the afternoon. So were talking about rain perhaps from late morning into early afternoon. And by Late Afternoon and evening, thats all out of here, and were cleared out. But thats only temporary because that other system is coming in for saturday. Theres saturday, 6 00 a. M. By noon, we have thunderstorms in the middle of the state. So i do expect a good amount of sunshine during the morning on saturday. Then the thunderstorms come in later in the day. So as we go through the day today, we have at least partly sunny skies across most of the area. Much of the philadelphia area, University City, 77 degrees. Some spots could get close to 80. West chester, 76 degrees. Partly sunny. Allentown, reading, well into the 70s. With lots of sunshine. But farther to the south, a little more cloud cover, keeping the temperature down. Especially in delaware. Dover only 69 degrees and then 66 degrees at rehoboth beach. Well see about the rest of the weekend forecast and next week coming up a little later. All right, and our Second Annual weather education day is set for next wednesday. A lot of people probably wish they could have been a fly on the wall for the one meeting in washington, d. C. This morning. Well bring you his comments when they happen. Swallowed by a sinkhole. A minivan slips beneath a tree. Well tell you where this happens and what kept the vehicle from falling deeper into the earth. Today marks one year since this happened. A new york bound northeast regional train entered a sharp curve going more than 100 miles per hour, derailing in port richmond. Eight people were killed and more than 200 hurt. This is what the derailment site looks like today. Sky force 10 flying over the same spot. And while everything looks calm and normal now, a lot of questions still remain about last years crash. The crash started a National Discussion about railroad safety, positive train control, or ptc, has been activated all along the northeast corridor. That Technology Shows if a train is going too fast along certain spots of the track, it is believed that had that system been up and running, it may have prevented that derailment. The American Red Cross of southeastern p. A. Is asking all volunteers especially those who responded to last years amtrak derailment to attend a candlelight vigil at 7 00 near the crash site. Theyre asking all attendees to meet at 2121 wheatsheaf lane in philadelphia. One of the survivors spoke out this morning about it derailment. Deanna durante is live at city hall with his story. Bob hewitt is 58 years old. He lives in new jersey. He used to have a schedule where he traveled. He works 50 hours a eke. He said all of that changed one year ago today when he was sitting in the front car of amtrak 188. Listen to how he described what happen that night. Right before i lost consciousness, i crashed head on with another gentleman. And i woke up laying on a pile of rocks, all my clothes had been ripped off. I couldnt move my legs. I couldnt see out of my right eye. And i was scared laying there. I could see the end of the train, cars were upright. Fires were starting. And i couldnt move, i couldnt get away. I started yelling for help. And when the First Responders did arrive on scene, one of them shined his flashlight on my head and yelled for help. And i remember him saying, this guys got to go now. The whole back of his heads coming off. Hewitt was the first amtrak injured victim to arrive at the hospital that night. The last to be released. His injuries so severe. Now, the picture that he wants people to look at is a man being carried from the rubble. He believes that is him, and he wants to find those First Responders who helped him get to the hospital. He says in this year, his daughter and his wife have urged him to come back to philadelphia to be able to say thank you to those men. He says his life has changed forever. The injuries he suffered are permanent, and he has 1. 4 million in medical bills. He was asked about what he hopes to come out of the ntsb investigation. He says he doesnt expect any surprises in this. The train, he says, was going too fast and he says he will attend a Memorial Service here at city hall, but its closed, just for the mayor, city staff, First Responders, and those survivors. Reporting live outside city hall, deanna durante. Thank you. Be sure you have the free nbc10 app, and watch the nbc10 news this afternoon starting at 4 00. Well have full coverage as our area marks one year since the deadly amtrak derailment. And back to decision 2016. This morning, Presumptive Republican nominee donald trump had his first facetoface rr meeting with house Speaker Paul Ryan. This shows trump arriving at the Party Headquarters in washington, d. C. , waving to folks there. The goal of the meeting was to find unity within the party, as the pair of men inside the building, immigration activists and other protesters demonstrated outside. Happening right now, house Speaker Paul Ryan is talking about that meeting. Want to take you there live and lets listen in. That is true, we do want to beat Hillary Clinton. That cant be the only point of unity here. Youre having trouble passing a budget here in the house. What makes you think you can get onboard with some of the things donald trump is talking about when it comes to policy . Let me say this. I think we had a very encouraging meeting. Look, its no secret that donald trump and i have had our differences. We talked about those differences today. Thats common knowledge. The question is, what is it that we need to do to unify the Republican Party and all strains of conservative wings in the party . We had a good and encouraging productive conversation on just how to do that. It was important that we discussed our differences that we have, but it was also important that we discuss the Core Principles that tyus all together. Principles like the constitution, the separation of powers, the fact that we have an executive that is going way beyond the boundaries of the constitution and how its important to us that we restore article i of the constitution. A principle of selfgovernment. We talked about life and how strongly we feel about this core principle. We talked about the Supreme Court and things like this. I was very encouraged with what i heard from donald trump today. I do believe that we are now planting the seeds to get ourselves unified, to bridge the gaps and differences, and so from here, were going to go deeper into the policy areas to see where the Common Ground is and how we can make sure were operating off the same Core Principles, so yes, this is our first meeting. I was very encouraged with this meeting, but this is a process. It takes time. You dont put it together in 45 minutes. So that is why we had, like i said, a very good start to a process in how we unify. Do you think its an issue mr. Speaker, i read that statement as well. I was still a little confused. Are you endorsing donald trump . If youre not, what is holding you back . Do you really have a choice . You ruled out voting for Hillary Clinton and endorsing her. The process of unifying the Republican Party, which just finished a primary about a week ago, perhaps one of the most divisive primaries in memory, takes some time. Look, there are people who are for donald trump, who are for ted cruz, for john kasich, who were for marco rubio and everybody else. And its very important that we dont fake unifying, we dont pretend unification, that we truly and actually unify so were full strength in the fall. I dont want us to have a fake unification process here. I want to make sure that we really truly understand each other and that we are committed to the conservative principles that make the Republican Party, that built this country, and again, i am very encouraged. I heard a lot of good things from our presumptive nominee, and we exchanged differences of opinion on a number of things that Everybody Knows we have. There are policy disputes we will have. Theres no two ways about it. Plenty of republicans disagree with one another on policy disputes. But on Core Principles, those are the kinds of things we discussed, and again, im encouraged. That was house Speaker Paul Ryan talking about his meeting with gop president ial candidate donald trump. He said the meeting was encouraging. He stopped shy, though, of giving an endorsement. He did say they talked about their differences and the Core Principles that unify them as Republican Party, the constitution and also the Supreme Court. But he said theyre planting seeds today that unify their party. So well keep an eye on this and monitor it and bring you more information as we get it. Chris christies new role in the Trump Campaign is prompting renewed calls for the new jersey governor to resign. All in for new jersey or all in for trump. Well, donald trump named christie chairman of his white house transition team, and residents tell us they fear state issues could fall to the wayside as the governor takes on more responsibility, but christie insists his job as governor will come first. He said working for trump will not keep him out of the state that much. As some of you may know about president ial transitions, the chairman is running the show, and i will do that and make the major decisions that need to be made. In the end, a lot of the work will be done by men and women who will volunteer their time as traditionally has happened. Governor christie stopped short of naming any other advisers considered for a possible trump white house. And voters in new jersey head to the polls for their states primary next month. But theres a new wave of Third Party Members growing in numbers for the libertarian party. Gary johnson is the libertarian candidate for president. Leaders of the party in new jersey said they saw a 23 increase in membership in the past three weeks. Theyre fed up with the twoparty system. Not happy with no one thats going for president this year. If you were to go for one or the other, trump or the presumptive nominee, hillary i just wouldnt vote. Officials tell us in one north jersey county, voters registering as libertarians increased 23 . Be sure to have the nbc10 app on your tablet or smartphone. Well send out push alerts and let you know what happened today in Donald Trumps trip to meet with paul ryan. And take a look at this new video of two men opening fire in the middle of the day in north philadelphia. One man jumped out of a van, started firing at a group of people on west butler street tuesday afternoon. Then the driver jumped out of the moving van, also starts shooting. Both men got back into the vehicle and took off. Somehow no one was hurt. And a threeday run to Honor Fallen Police officers is now under way. The 20th anniversary Law Enforcement memorial run started about an hour and a half ago at the Philadelphia Navy yard. Participants will run 150 miles. Theyll finish on saturday at the national Law Enforcement memorial in washington, d. C. Were seeing new video this morning of a hero in action. Take a look. When a car flipped over and caught fire, one man races to the rescue. Well hear from the good samarit samaritan. Glenn. Its going to be windy, stormy, and kind of chilly this weekend, but of course, not all at the same time. Ill explain all of that timing of that ahead in my first alert neighborhood weather forecast. Investigators say two more recently discovered pieces of debris appear to be from missing Malaysian Airlines flight 370. Mh370 vanished in march of 2014 with 239 people onboard. They were found in south africa and on a Remote Island in the indian ocean. International team of experts confirmed both items are almost certainly from mh370. That brings the total number of debris pieces from the missing jet to five. Now, take a look at this car that fell into a sinkhole. This is in london. People in nearby homes say they heard a sound similar to thunder around 3 00 a. M. Local time. It was actually a large hole opening up in the ground outside. That blue car there ended up resting on utility pipes that kept it from falling all the way into the sinkhole. Police are monitoring the situation in case they need to evacuate homes. A driver is expected to be okay after this fiery crash in los angeles. The bottom of your screen, youre going to see that hes unconscious inssz the upside down car. I knew it was a human life in there, and i just wasnt going to witness getting roasted. Police are investigating the crash that may have been linked to street racing. Before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to europe and to northern africa. Some gifted young local musicians will take center stage this weekend. Members of the philadelphia region youth string music or prism will give their final performance of the season. Here to tell us more is gloria, the director and conductor of prism. Shes also here with cellist with the philadelphia orchestra, joined mere by one of her young performers, abigail. Well call her abbey. Shes a sixth grader in middle school. Welcome to you both. Abbey, are you nervous . Dont be. Youre going to do just fine. Prism is a division of the philadelphia youth orchestra. Gloria, tell us more about the organization and its purpose. The prism organization was formed to be a theater orchestra into all of the other older orchestras where we have strings, nition to the strings, we have winds, percussion, and brass. So these Young Children have their First Experience of playing string instruments together as an ensemble and learn to listen to each other and play together and follow the conductor and change their role from being support to leader to being the one in the middle. They learn how to do it all in these younger orchestras that we have formed for prism, and prism Young Artists. The initial organization became so large within two years, we had to form two divisions of prism. So we have prism and prism Young Artists. Prism Young Artists is for the very youngest ones. We have children as young as 7 and 8 years old, and as their skills build, they matriculate into prism. Saturdays performance is a culmination of a years worth of practice. Tell us what the audience can expect to see. Theyre going to be amazed. Its absolutely infectious, contagious enthusiasm from these young students. And im always amazed because i give them very challenging repertoire. Were playing repertoire that actually the philadelphia orchestra performs and has performed. And i dont dumb down anything from them. I set the bar very high. We give them lots of support during the year, and by gosh, those kids come up every year and surpass what i even thought they might be able to do when i started out with that group. Abbey here is anxious to talk, i can see her squirming in her seat. Tell me what the experience has been like for you playing with prism. Well, i really enjoy playing as an orchestra. And we get to play really hard music that the philadelphia orchestra would play. Same music that the philadelphia orchestra plays . You play. Wow. Are you intimidated by it . T does it make you more nervous or scared or are you impressed by the other kids who play and you all sort of lift each other . I think it makes it more fun. Its challenging. But its youre stepping up to that level, right . Wow, do the other kids at school know you do this . Some of them. Well, i tell you what, if they dont, they will now because youre on tv. As you know, gloria, music programs are facing budget cuts all over the place. Tell me about the importance of art education, the arts in curriculum, school curriculum. Its so important if we can do science and technology and math, we also need to have a soul to what were doing and personal expression in all these things. The arts really promote that. Playing in an orchestra or an ensemble, we learn how to do team work, how to do complex problem solving. We learn how to give of ourselves to each other and to the community. And ive always heard kids who are in music programs do much better, especially in math theres much data to support that. Im not one of those people that does much better in math. I may be the anomaly. Are you good in math . Of course you are. Abseprobably good at everything. We appreciate you coming in. The concert will be held saturday, 3 00 p. M. At centennial hall. In harverford, and we have postd information on nbc10. Com and our nbc10 app. And abbey, youre so beautiful and so talented. Congratulations. Keep it up. Had a pretty long stretch of gloomy weather. When cool weather, too, but today with the sunshine, temperatures going up. 72 degrees already in philadelphia. And lehigh valley, close to 70 elsewhere. With some high clouds especially, delaware getting the cloudiest conditions right now. But in philadelphia itself, already well into the 70s. Fox chase at 75. Winchester park at 74. At the airport, its 72, as you saw. Parkside, 79. Maybe not believable, a little too high, i think. Chestnut hill, 75. The satellite picture showing the dark area is no cloudy. White, thats clouds. Theyre not moving up. Theyre kind of sitting down there in delaware and parts of maryland. So things are quiet, but back to the wes, we have showers and thunderstorms that are going to be affecting us. The sun and the warmth have returned.
