They say this high tide was worse than last nights. Unfortunately, we werent able to get here fast enough. We werent too prepared with sandbags as we normally would. All along the shore, beaches eroded, the result of massive wind driven waves eating away at protective dunes. These left with dangerously steep drops. This is what happened. All that work they did and it just gets washed out every time the storm comes in. This area behind me took a pretty good beating from this storm. The city getting set to make emergency repairs to areas now more vulnerable to future storms. Its the cost of doing business at the jersey shore and protecting our infrastructure. The mayor tells us it will likely cost North Wildwood between 500,000 and 1 million to fix the damage just from this storm. Live tonight in ventnor, im ted greenberg, nbc 10 news. In south jersey, one homeowner survived a close call after a massive tree smashed right on to their house. Dana reganata says she was home and could see the fireplace was cracked. She called her husband and the Fire Department. The Fire Department told her to get out. So she and her husband grabbed papers out of the bedroom and left. Seconds later that tree fell right on top of the bedroom where they just were. All of a sudden we just heard this loud crazy crashing sound, so we were both trying to run down the stairs. Fortunately, no one was injured. The family is expected to meet with Insurance Adjusters tomorrow. Lets take a live look at conditions in cape may county. Much calmer than yesterday. But showers are still passing through the area today. Wind gusts reached up to 30 Miles Per Hour in some parts of our area today. Lets go to glenn hurricane schwartz with the forecast. I know youre tracking big weather changes. Yeah, we need to get rid of what weve got right now. We still have that noreaster on the map. You can see the swirl off the long island coast. And its spinning moisture around. Just like we have when we have big snowstorms in the winter. This is the backlash. The backside of the storm. And it is very slow to move out. And thats why were getting these bands of rain coming through especially in new jersey, especially Long Beach Island getting pounded. It had the most rain of the whole storm anyway. And now were getting more. Now were getting also a changeover to some snow in poconos and some other higher elevationses in the Lehigh Valley and more showers in parts of Chester County and berks county as well. Even going into new castle county. So were not quite done with this yet. Its going to take a while to finally move out. And because the storm itself is not moving out, the wind gusts are still pretty strong. These are sustained winds over 20 Miles Per Hour in much of the area and the temperature in the low 40s, 37 in coteville. We dont have to worry about below freezing temperatures tonight. New at 6 00, nbc 10 uncovers new evidence in the case against a mother accused of killing her adopted daughter in a rape murder fantasy. Sara packer is charged with killing her 14yearold daughter grace. And tonight nbc 10s Deanna Durante got her hands on some of packers social media postings. It includes what appears to be bragging about having a child in the hospital in a psychiatric ward. At first the posts seem like typical quizzes, thoughts and feelings and pictures of grace packer and other children. Then theres this long entry posted by sara in september of 2009. She talks about grace and her brother, makes mention of two other foster children, one she complains ran away after calling police she writes, the child is, quote, nice and safe in the psych ward for a couple of days. What comes to mind when you see that . Its disturbing to me. Well go wherever the evidence leads. We caught up with District Attorney matt winetraub at a bucks county event. He wont say if these postings nbc 10 has obtained are part of the case. He says forensic investigators are still looking at phones and other evidence. Really leave no stone unturned. Reporter packer is accused of acting out a rape murder fantasy with her boyfriend. Theyre accused of murdering grace. Packer lost her job in january 2010, the same time a criminal case was opened against her thenhusband david. He pled guilty to sexually abusing a foster child and grace when she was 9. On january 19th, 2010, sara seems to be posting about the event saying she lost everything in the span of four days and makes mention of tears and sobbing. Sources say grace and her brother were briefly taken from the packer home during that time. On january 26th, 2010 she says its been one week. I miss them more than anything. And in july of 2011, sara takes a quiz in which she answers money and lack of it get on her nerves. Police say long after grace was killed sara continued to cash Social Security checks meant for grace. In some of those postings, sara mentions the name of another foster child. Police sources say they have yet to track that child down. We can tell you that the packers had 30 foster kids placed in their care. And so far the state has not said who or if anyone is looking to track down those children. In bucks county, Deanna Durante, nbc 10 news. In pennsylvania, speed cameras could soon start rolling on drivers in Road Construction zones. Today the state Senate Transportation Committee Approved a bill for a fiveyear speed camera pilot program. At least two warning signs would be posted to warn drivers about those cameras. Fines would only be given to people going more than 11 Miles Per Hour. President donald trump said today he will announce his pick to fill the Vacant Supreme Court seat some time next week. Also today mr. Trump pushed forward a pair of Pipeline Projects that have been the subject of much debate. He signed executive actions to advance then ko instruction of both the keystone xl and the Dakota Access pipelines. President obama killed the keystone xl project two years ago and the army decided that the dakota pipeline threatened native american cultural sites. A media blackout at the Environmental Protection agency. It banned epa employees from giving social media updates and speaking with reporters and it barred staff from awarding any new contracts or grants. New jerseys sierra club has issued a statement that reads in part, trumps freeze will directly impact our state putting cleanups throughout the state on hold. It will disrupt Water Quality testing at toxic sites while stopping efforts to clean up our water supply. President trump is scheduled to make his first visit to philadelphia as president this week. Capital police are stepping up security in center city ahead of the president s visit thursday. Mr. Trump is scheduled to speak at a retreat for Congressional Republicans at the loews hotel. That gets under way with Speaker Paul Ryan set to address the group. Today protesters hit the streets of philadelphia rallying against several of president trumps cabinet picks. Stop trumps cabinet. This happened outside senator bob caseys philadelphia office. Theyre trying to stop the senate from confirming a number of the cabinet nominees. Groups gared at the offices of their members of congress as part of todays effort. From our Delaware Bureau, a wilmington crime crackdown. Theres been 18 shootings in the city so far this year. Today the mayor announced an antiviolence initiative called Operation Safe streets. Theyre implements new policing tactics including 19 additional officers. It calls on residents to help by reporting and assisting in solving crime. New information about a deadly policeinvolved shooting in wilmington. Police say bruce altenberger was distraught and armed with a gun when Police Arrived at the home last night. Officers tried to calm him down for several minutes but the 60yearold reportedly pointed a gun at them. Thats when the officer fired killing altenberger. A man is accused of beating and choking his mother because she changed the tv channel. Today North Hampton county police gave us this mug shot of david cantrell. Police say he choked his mother until she lost consciousness. Happened in the borough of bath sunday night. He remains in jail tonight. New jersey is making moves to create a public registry for animal abusers. Theyve approved a bill to create such a database. The bill now moves to the sthaet. Supporters say that bill will keep people who have abused animals from being a able to adopt one. In new jersey every High School Student in the state may soon be screened for drug abuse. A bill introduced in the state senate is designed to help fight the states opioid epidemic. The legislation would require public, private and Charter Schools to give Substance Abuse screenings. The goal is to stop addiction before it even starts. Police in south jersey are on the hunt for two suspects in a series of school breakins. This is video of the suspects as they walked on to the property. Theyre also accused of robbing a nearby high school. Crooks stole cash boxes from vending machines three separate times last week. The road to recovery for this philadelphia sheriffs lieutenant hit a huge milestone today. Paul owens was surrounded by family and his colleagues as he left the Rehab Facility this morning. He had been there since august. You may remember he was riding in an elevator at the criminal Justice Center when the elevator catapulted up through cement barriers. Owens was paralyzed from the waist down. Just trying to get back to regular life. Its hard, but you know, just part of the process. Weve got a long way to go. But i bgot this far. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the elevator to malfunction. Theyve filed a lawsuit. Uneasiness about this concert venue downtown. A new developer is taking over the queen theater. Now nearby businesses along Market Street are worried whether the theater can keep bringing in big name acts along with big money. They say despite their efforts, the Market Street renaissance hasnt picked up enough steam to keep the place running. A lot of people are big fans over what world cafe brought to the area but the place lost its buzz and its ability to draw big name acts. Normally a wedding over there, not a decent show. And now thats going to be much less tomorrow it. Will be milder tomorrow and thursday. Significantly into the 50s both days. And overall a dry pattern once we get this stinking storm out of the way thats still spinning off shore and its spinning moisture right around and some of it spinning right down into our area. And so some folks are still getting rain and have been getting rain for hours like in Long Beach Island, look at this, coming right over the same spot hour after hour after hour. Trenton getting pretty much the same thing and parts of bucks county, lower bucks and Burlington County getting a good bit of rain this afternoon. Now, in the pocono mountains, were changing over to a little bit of light snow at times. You continue to see pretty strong wind gusts. 35 Miles Per Hour in wilmington. But not nearly as strong as it was yesterday and even not quite as strong as it was just a few hours ago. Tomorrow is dry, lots of sunshine. Thursday we have a weak system coming through. It may create some showers, especially at the shore. And then a mix of clouds and sun during the day. That could push temperature s well into the 50s in many parts of the area before the colder air starts coming in later in the week. But tomorrow its not cold. 53 in tacony. 52 in schwenksville. 50 in reading, even reading up near 50. Longport 50 and in delaware temperatures into the mid50s as well. So we head toward the weekend, it starts getting colder. But these temperatures are pretty close to average for this time of the year. And youll notice no rain and also no strong winds.
