The loss is a tough hit in the Philadelphia Community. Now former players are sharing memories of their legendary teammate. John clark joins us with that story. You said it. Darren daulton one of the most beloved philly athletes ever and one of the best leaders this city has seen. The phillies, city and fans remembered him today. Dutch passed away on the same date, august 6, that he was inducted into the phillies wall of fame seven years ago. Its almost like i can no longer call you fans. We have been through too much together so i will start calling you family. Darren daulton was a 25th round draft pick. He built himself into an all star catcher. The unquestioned leader of the 93 phillies, the team that captured phillies hearts. He was the glue that kept a bunch of misfits together in 93. Dutch was a mans man. Macho on the field but he would hug and kiss you when he saw you. He became brothers with many of his teammates. He changed my life. He saved my life. I went through a lot in my life. I owe him for what i have now. My wife now, he introduced me to her. Reporter four years ago dutch started battling a very aggressive brain cancer. He battled it like he did the nine knee surgeries throughout his career. A little tired but other than that i feel like im playing the game again. Reporter dutch told us a few years ago the outpouring of love was helping him through his fight. I spent most of my life in philadelphia. You go through something that we Work Together on this. Its now its family. Reporter the Life Expectancy of gleeo plastoma could be a year. Dutch made it four years. Inspiring and unbelievable. Reporter that is very true. Dutchs courageous battle against brain cancer should inspire many going through the same fight right now. We both grew up huge phillies fans. You followed dutch for many years. We talked about great memories with him. Any story you can share about dutch . Just growing up in the philly area, being a young kid. The phillies were losers for a while. The team went from worst to first and he wasal really the b brother of the clubhouse. You had character guys and a lot of goofy guys. Darren daulton policed the clubhouse. He basically willed them to win. A lot of them said that it was his confidence in the way he carried himself that helped them get over the hump. He had movie star looks but from kansas. Perfect here in philadelphia with his work ethic. He was a battler and a gamer. Tied those misfits together for sure. What a great guy off the diamond, too. Every fan that came in contact with him, darren would make you feel like you were the only person he was talking to. There have been many stories, people run into him and he would buy them a beer. A call for action after a dirt bike rider was shot and killed by philadelphia police. Today a group gathered at the scene where david jones died in june. They are marching to washington, d. C. They plan to arrive there on august 28 to present a list of demands and reforms for the department of justice. This is Surveillance Video of the incident. An officer shot jones as he was running away after a traffic stop and say jones had a gun. He later died from his injuries. Its a never ending fight. As long as one person gets killed it never stops. We have to stop it. The officer involved now is on paid administrative leavement Attorney Generals Office is investigating the shooting. A 13yearold boy is recovering after he claims he was shot in kensington. The victim says he was hit in the foot while walking near the intersection of kensington avenue. He was taken to saint christophers hospital. Police went back to the intersection and didnt find evidence. A recent string of violence has safety officials urging you to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Police say that since last wednesday four robberies have taken place between 32nd and 35th streets. In two cases a gun was pulled on the victims. A hitandrun driver on a dirt bike plowed a local woman down and now police are hoping they can catch the person who did it. The woman you see here walked out of the store, standing on a sidewalk when a man on a dirt bike plowed her over. New at 5 00, nbc 10 Jersey Shore Bureau reporter took us on the search for the driver. I was over there. Reporter she saw the after math seconds after a woman was mowed down by a speeding dirt bike. Could have been me and my grand kids. The woman had just come out of this Fried Chicken restaurant on main street when she was struck around 6 30. Authorities say she was knocked to the ground and dragged at least 75 feet by the bike suffering serious head and internal injuries. Surveillance cameras captured the rider running away from the scene leaving the bike behind. I couldnt believe it. A human being. It wasnt an animal. Reporter many had been fearing a crash like this. The hitandrun comes less than two months after nbc 10 told you about the citys ongoing problems with off road dirt bikers causing a ruckus on streets where they are illegal to ride. Police say this biker wearing a mask drove on to the sidewalk to avoid traffic stopped at a light. This is akin to us as taking out a firearm and shooting someone standing on the sidewalk. Reporter police tell me they have in bein touch with the Prosecutors Office and state agencies to help with a more aggressive crack down on the problem that will include locating and confiscating the bikes if necessary and taking action against the riders. At least one person is shot after police opened fire. It happened on the 2200 block not clear why officers fired but one person has been rushed to the hospital. He is accused of running over and injuring two officers. It happened just over 11 00 on saturday night at east coast gas. Police say the officers were injured while responding to complaints of someone tampering with equipment there. Both officers are okay. A new anticruelty bill is in effect. The new law puts a limit on how long your dog can be chained up outside. Animals cant be tied up for more than nine hours at a time and only 30 minutes in extreme conditions. It limits the length and type of tether that can be used. Owners in violation can be subject to a fine. The owner of a philadelphia bakery closing shop and tells nbc 10 the citys soda tax was the last straw. The owner of c. C. After a trio of rare august tornadoes ripped through the city and surrounding area. One triking a normally bustling Shopping Center sunday. Im in awe that we are alive. I thank the lord. I have never seen this in real person. You see it on the movies and on the news. In real life it is really bad. Reporter at least 30 people injured, some by flying debris and others by collapsed buildings. Lacerations, pretty serious lacerations. Reporter and more than 10,000 without power. We had flood reports all over the place in terms of areas by Cumberland County and reports. Lets take a closer look at where the rain is now falling. This is not as heavy as earlier. It is horrible to still see areas like kent county. These are problem areas. Thats a pretty steady rain starting to jump the bay. Next up cumberland keebt wicoun more rain. They have been pounded throughout today. We take a look over parts of the suburbs. Light to steady rain that moves along and wilmington getting rain. Huge gradient between quarter inch and half an inch rain totals to the three, four, plus inch totals that we saw farther south. Along the shore you see a light to steady rain. Nothing like what we saw earlier today. Still we have warnings in place. We have arial subwarning in parts of the shore where we have gotten reports in effect through 8 15. This is areas where the ground is so saturated that the rain has easily led to flooding issues. These are just some of the flood reports that have come in. Usually more come in after the fact. All of these green squares are locations where reports have come down and where the band of heaviest rain move through today. So it is no surprise. In new jersey, more than 4 1 2 inches of rain report sked. Nearly three inches in delaware. These are just a handful of reports we have received. On our hour by hour we start to track this as we go through the evening hours. Scattered showers going to linger through the area. 6 30 through the night possibly lingering showers over parts of mercer county. The heaviest rain no longer a problem. As we go through the night and into tomorrow most of us keeping the clouds. We may see lingering showers along the shore and southern delaware. There is clearing line on the back side and that is going to lead to much better conditions as we go through the next few days and temperatures are able to warm up much more than they did today. We go a glen to talk about that. They have had a long way to go to get back up to average. Average high is 86. Its 68 degrees at philadelphia and we havent hit 70 yet. Barely into the 70s in delaware and south jersey. 66 degrees in allentown. 67 in redding. 60 in mount pocono. That is really cool. With 78 yesterday for the high, 69 so far today. We may not hit 80 tomorrow because of all the clouds. Once we get the sun back the temperatures go back up through the 80s. But that is still not quite the average. This is a tangled tale of two accounts with one company. They use Online Banking to pay verizon land line phone bill. He tells us a couple months ago his wife accidently paid their closed wireless account instead of the one for the land line. She hit the wrong icon. That caused a problem he didnt expect. Reporter when verizon the land line hadnt gotten paid they shut off the service. He contacted for a refund. All done. He said he couldnt do anything about it. Reporter he called the folks who handle land line accounts. Once connected he said the company turned the land line service back on and promised a refupd. We waited and waited. Reporter he says after waiting nearly two months he contacted nbc 10 responds. This is all communications. Reporter we went over documents and contacted verizon. For customer privacy reasons we dont discuss details of customer accounts. Kelly says two days after we got involved verizon contacted him. How did we do for you . We got 147 back. And his service to boot. Kelly says to make sure they dont make that mistake again he has deleted the closed verizon account from Online Banking. That is something all of us need to do.
