I have to shovel out my moms car in case of emergencies. Reporter the storm is having a domino effect on this berks county city. 20 snow plow drivers are working 12hour shifts tackling the secondary roads through the afternoon. Trash pickups are delayed by a day and for snow Loving School kids, like francisco and mariana, classes are canceled for the rest of the week. Youre a pretty good older brother. I guess so. Reporter youre out of breath. Yes. Reporter in reading this midmarch storm packed a snowy punch for anyone required to work. So you have to be out in this . Yeah. Reporter or just trying to stay ahead of the accumulation. And theres really good reason to try to stay ahead of that accumulation for people here. Residents are required to dig out fire hydrants and the sidewalks out front of their house 24 hours after the final flake falls. That will be by about 3 30 tomorrow. Well be keeping track to let you know how the digout goes here in reading. Were live in reading. Im george spencer, nbc 10 news. George, glenn hurricane schwartz says more snow is on the way within the hour. The biggest concern for most of the area, temperatures dropping and then refreezing. On the roads, even on the sidewalks like here on broad street, any precipitation could ice over. Nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz and tammie souza here with us. We start with glenn. Whats the situation like now . The temperature is above freezing. This is really the best time to try to get rid of the snow, but its still deceptive because its not that deep. Its heavy. This is heart attack snow. This is the type of snow that you need to use your knees, not your back because this stuff is like wet cement. And do it now rather than when its absolutely frozen. Youll have a block of ice later tonight. Then tomorrow morning, too. So as difficult as its going to be now, it will be that much harder tomorrow and were going to be seeing a little bit more. George will be getting this snow shower pretty soon and its moving straight to the east just about getting into chester county, east nottingham getting it now, coatesville in a little bit. Pottstown will get it soon, too. You can see new london in the path of this. And knocks the visibility down and puts moisture on the roads. It doesnt really accumulate a lot, but it can cause problems. It can cause accidents because theres more moisture on the road as the temperature goes below freezing. Theres the center of the big storm. Now getting towards maine. And the temperature now down to 28 in reading, lancaster. Things are already starting to ice up there. But after sunset, its going to be way worse. 34 in philadelphia. 36 in wildwood. The wind is out of the northwest. So that direction is blowing off shore. So no more high tide flooding at the shore with this storm. Weve got 40mileperhour wind gusts at Dover Air Force base. 36 Atlantic City and toms river we did have gusts over 50 Miles Per Hour in parts of the area. Temperature dropping down into the low 20s in philadelphia and feeling like 8 by tomorrow morning, and thats not the last of the cold weather. Meteorologist tammie souza has more on what to expect. Oh, its awfully fierce. It feels like january, right, glenn . Nothing at all like march. Although i think theres some light at the end of the tunnel by the time we get to the weekend. Right now were dealing with all this snow. Glenns right, you want to get out there and clean it up if you can. If you have time this evening. Pace yourself. We are dealing with a half foot or more of snow. Take a look across all of the counties. This is what has fallen. Malvern picked up 7 inches, royersford picked up 7 1 2 inches, upper darby picked up 6 inches of snow. A substantial amount of snow fairly impressive considering all the sleet that fell and a little bit of ice mixing in with that. We thought these totals might be a little higher but not to be. Heres something that you have to be concerned with, the temperature falling. Weve talked about it. But this is the difference from the same time yesterday. So were 8 degrees colder at the airport in philadelphia. And were going to continue to see the temperature falling, the wind chill is going to get you because its going to feel like the Single Digits at times. You really have to cover all that skin because in as little as 30 minutes you could get frostbite, something quite nasty. We all have to bundle up for sure. Mitch blacher up in skyforce 10 to give us a birdseye view of whats left from the storm. Youre up over the boulevard. Reporter yeah, guy, you want to get a good example of what the meteorologists are talking about as far as the potential for black ice, this snow plow right in front of the proceed you can see theyre not pushing snow right now. Thats water in front of the plow. One of the main things the city has been talking about is as youre clearing your sidewalks and the areas around your house, to make sure to clear your drains so that the storm water can go down those drains. You can see all that water just kind of sliding off of that plow right there. The city of philadelphia at the height of this storm had about 400 of these types of trucks full of salt, about 50,000 tons of salt available. And theyre deploying it all throughout the city. The roads, as you can see, pretty good shape especially the main corridors like columbus boulevard. Guys . Mitch matcher in skyforce 10 for us tonight. Ice forming on trees and branches really causing some headaches for a lot of people all over the region really. Nbc 10 found these power lines down in mt. Laurel. Cydney long traveled through burlington and Camden County today. Shes live in audubon where yet another tree came down. Reporter hey, keith, and this one tree behind us, its a big tree but one of dozens if not hundreds across the region. Take a look. It is split in half. It looks like an l right over here. The side of the tree that fell to the left, that did damage to that home on the left, but the part that fell to the right and into the street, it took down two utility lines, the wires along with it and knocked out power in this area. Trees split in half sitting on homes and blocking roadways, ice coated branches snapped. And in the words of residents, it happened left and right. People might look out the woind and say, oh, this is not a serious storm. This is a serious storm. This is a very serious storm. This is actually more dangerous than if we actually had two feet of snow. Reporter and we saw damage almost everywhere. We hit five towns across two counties. Gloucester wind and rain made it tough for drivers. Very windy and all over the place on the road. Reporter in laurelton, mount laurel crews are fast to open roadways like route 38 where wires laid across the road and in Shopping Center parking lot. This man woke up to trees snapping in his backyard. All these branches are laden with a thick coat of ice. And theyre snapping all over this neighborhood. Were without power. A lot of this town is without power. Reporter until Mother Nature eases up and trees stop falling down, hes enjoying a wintry game of fetch with his lab riley. Residents watched the sparks fly on arcing line. Theyre anxious for power crews to quickly fix lost electricity sooner rather than later. We do have small sections that are without power. Theyre setting up a warming shelter for those people. Reporter as we speak about a thousand residents here in audubon, Camden County, are still without power this afternoon as these families are waiting and watching, these crews working here on walnut street. We could see work like this being done over the next 24 hour. We hung up with the Camden County oem. They got 1500 911 calls for downed power lines and trees. That was as of 3 00 this afternoon. On average Camden County responds to about 180 fire calls a day. Today they got 486. So this work were going to continue to see this probably over the next day or so. Live in audubon tonight, cydney long, nbc 10 news. Working hard tonight. Delaware is also having power problems. The thick ice is really taking its toll on tree branches there as well. Nbc 10 viewer liz sent us this shot from new york. Still a problem when driver after driver gets stuck and has to be rescued. Drew smith joins us from ocean city. Reporter the sun has been trying to peek out but the rain remains intense. Thats why im hanging on as i stand up here. The big impact from the storm and thats the white caps out on the ocean. Flooding came earlier than expected to Atlantic City. My house is flooded. I live on connecticut. Its flooded. Reporter also 1 1 2 hours before high tide streets in margate began to fill up. Drivers spent a lot of time in reverse as they try to find a way around the submerged spots. Others stopped to get a better look. Some people enjoy the excitement of this type of weather, like myself. Reporter even after the floodwater starts to recede, you can see all the debris thats left right out in the middle of the street all the way down. It was a little worse than we anticipated. We were looking for 6, 6 1 2 feet above low mean water and it came closer to 9 feet. Reporter in north wildwood, the ocean pounded the beach. Homeowners came down to check out the erosion. And back up in Atlantic City, some drivers who did not heed the warnings to move their cars will likely deal with saltwater damage from this storm. Ive heard stories of them having to put money back into their vehicles in flooding repairs. Reporter and ocean city is one of the spots that put a lot of emergency sand here to try to blunt the impact of that erosion, but this is the High Water Mark coming all the way up here to that beach fencing. Reporter erin and keith, were at the corner of germantown avenue and graber. Take a look at this. This is the main drag here in Chestnut Hill. No trouble getting through here. Look over here when you turn on to the smaller streets, what you have to trudge through, a lot of snow still left on these roads. Here in Chestnut Hill where there are hills, take a look down there. You can see how tough it is to get around in some of these areas. But let me take you to a neighborhood a few blocks from here where digging out just got a lot easier. On mead street in Chestnut Hill, the home of the snow blower is a Welcome Change for neighbors who make a habit of helping each other when theres a big snowstorm. Two years ago we had a huge snow, and the whole neighborhood was out. We have a lot of older residents that we helped shovel out. We were out for hours and decided after our backs were killing us that it was time to get a snow blower. Reporter they pitched in to buy it and were all smiles as they gathered to watch its Maiden Voyage down the block. Do you feel like youre investment is paying off . Absolutely. 100 . My back does, too. Reporter theres still shoveling to get the cars out, but with heavy snow like this, it makes a big difference. This is tim woods car. Hes new to the neighborhood. Reporter any help you can get is good with this kind of stuff because this is not that nice fluffy snow. It is really the wet, heavy stuff. Just take a look at this. If you have to leave the house, how are roads across the region right now . Francesca ruscio tracking those Road Conditions. A lot of people had off today because of the snow. Now tomorrow morning thats going to be a different story. Take a look at these Road Conditions. A lot of them are mostly wet as of right now. The blue route is pretty shiny because of the wetness at baltimore pike. But the main concern is the ice. Once those temperatures start to drop and we start to see that icy conditions really starting to kick in for tomorrow morning, its going to create hazardous Road Conditions for tomorrow. Route 73 at 38 in maple shade, new jersey, very light cars right now. If you have to be out and about, take it slow and use caution. Back to you guys at the desk. Thats really one of the biggest concerns tonight, the wet roads freezing again, causing those dangerous conditions out there because the temperatures are really going to plummet on us. Lets get an update on what we can expect from glenn hurricane schwartz. Were looking at single digit temperatures at some point, too . Feels like temperatures, yeah, and even close to zero. Were in the middle of march. Its not supposed to get this cold. The average high for the day is 52. Tomorrow we may not hit 30. Here we are in south philly, i95. You can see the sun glistening off the highway and travel is okay, but look at the sky in the distance. It is pitch black. Thats toward the west. Those are those snow showers that i was telling you about and im about to show you, too. North and west with all the snow that fell, the snow and ice refreezing solid. Even some snow blowers may have some trouble with this stuff. The i95 corridor, snow, slush, ice, refreezing rock hard, as you just saw, and at the shore the winds are blowing off shore. You dont have to worry about coastal flooding anymore. 34 philadelphia now, with some sunshine. At least for a while. Some of the western suburbs the clouds have come back. 28 degrees and near freezing elsewhere. So its already pretty cold. Lets take a look in new jersey. And we can see princeton at 31, hopewell township, 30, robbinsville 31. Lumberton, florence at 32, mt. Laurel 31, medford 33 and theyre going down. Nothing to stop it. And it actually gets colder when you have a snow cover and clearing skies. Here we go. Feeling like close to zero, keith, pottstown, westchester, allentown. And thats just by 11 30. It gets now even colder by tomorrow morning. We get up and youre trying to shovel that snow, and its hard and look how cold its going to feel. Its better to do it with this last sunshine of the day than tomorrow morning. Here we go in the afternoon. Its only feeling like 7 or 8 north and west where you got all that snow. And by thursday morning the same story. Only 5, 6 degrees. So this is more than just 24 hours of cold. So were dry in philly now, got the sun out. But look whats coming. We got a little bit of snow just about to hit reading and new morgan, farther to the south its coming into chester county, about to hit west chester, newark, middletown, flurries as well while the main storm is still off in new england. We have 29 for the high tomorrow with some snow showers thursday and friday, its barely a little bit warmer, remember, the average high 52. 37 is the warmest its going to be the rest of the week in the suburbs. But by getting rid of the mandate to buy insurance, the cbo estimates 14 Million People would Lose Health Coverage next year. White house budget chief Mick Mulvaney doesnt believe that number. The cbo believes premiums would initially go up 15 , then drop 10 in 2020. New at 5 30, digging out from a foot of snow shoveled, yes, thats a baking sheet to lift the snow from under this car in reading. But man, this car isnt going anywhere. It is surrounded covered in snow. Story of my life this afternoon. High tide by the way left behind flooded streets at the jersey shore this morning, whipping winds, heavy rains left several inches of water on some streets at the ocean. Some drivers took their chances driving through the water. Some became stranded, however. And farther down the shore, take a look at the waves crashing into the beach in wildwood. The high tide was taking chunks away from the beach. By the way, this is brandnew parts a brandnew part of the beach, i should say, that was already washing away. Mitch blacher is high up in skyforce 10. You are over manayunk in one of the steepest hills in the city. What does it look like there . Not all bad with the digout. These kids are enjoying one of the steepest parts of the hills. One of the things we wanted to look at was lepering street. This is notoriously one of the steepest streets in the city of philadelphia. You can see its plowed pretty well. We have seen cars going up it. So there seems to be able to pass at a pretty decent jump. Weve seen a couple of people having to dig their cars out from when the plows back piling up the snow on the outside of the parked cars. Live for us high above manayunk, trouble spots there, but looks like crews have done well there. The snow, the rain, the ice we got. The next danger is the freeze. Chief meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is tracking the chilly temperatures for us. Yeah, the temperatures already close to freezing, in some places below freezing. Of course, it will go even lower. Then were going to add moisture to the roads, as if we needed any, to make for more ice later on. Here are the snow showers that weve been tracking coming into chester county, just about on to coatesville. Its snowing at a pretty good clip in east nottingham now. And that will be going toward east marlboro, eventually westchester. Boston is right on that rain snow line. That rain snow line produced a lot less snow in new york than they were expecting as well. 34 degrees if philadelphia, down to 28 in reading and lancaster already. And we have wind making it feel even colder, gusting 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour. 40 at Dover Air Force base. 65 Miles Per Hour at seaside heights, new jersey. Here goes the philadelphia. This is in philadelphia, into the 20s. It will be in the teens in the suburbs feeling like Single Digits. That means everything is frozen solid. Heres meteorologist tammie souza with more on the snow totals. Talk about freezing solid, take a look at this. This is i95. Earlier this morning this poor little tree down here was coated with ice. It was standing a little bit taller, its bending over at this point. Still has ice on it. That will be a problem as we head through the evening hours. Talk about snow totals. We just got the newest ones in. The totals that weve had up until now were through about the noon hour or 1 00. Some of these have bumped up. Yes, we pretty much projected that we get between 6 and 10 in philadelphia. Now officially at the airport 6 inches of snow will go down in the record books as the total for philadelphia. Mt. Pocono takes the prize at 24 inches. The Lehigh Valley, 14. 5. Berks 13. 3. Again, philadelphia looking at 6 inches out there. Cape may, believe it or not, 2. 8 inches fell though some of that is sleet being measured as well. In penn wynne 5 inches. Wilmington 2 and mt. Holly 5. 3. Not too shabby although a little bit less. Only a few inches because of that sleet and that freezing rain. Over to you. Thats the Lehigh Valley were finding a parking spot right now, can be tricky. Theyre working the shovels and the plows, a lot of snow falling today across the Lehigh Valley. With almost no tread on the tires, these guys arent going anywhere. Really bad. Plow trucks mostly had the roads to themselves, but then there was zach ortman who just got his license learning to navigate snow and ice. You got to drive slow and safe. Reporter youre a new driver. My mom wanted me to get some practice. Reporter and in Wyoming County a snow slide like a small avalanche covered the roads. In stroudsburg National Guard and humvees escorted a 20monthold boy in need to the hospital in need of a heart transplant. It was all hands on deck in bethlehem no matter the size waking up to cars covered in snow. I wasnt hoping for it, but i was expecting it. Reporter the seals family says theyre reluctantly happy that winter finally arrived. Hopefully it melts soon. No parking around here. The major winter storm didnt just hit our region but the entire northeast. Reporters from our sister stations in connecticut and washington, d. C. , filed these reports a short time ago. Were in frederick county, maryland, about 45 minutes north and west of washington, d. C. It is here that the snow totals and the snow piles were highest in the washington, d. C. Region. But this was a bullet dodged for the d. C. Area. So much worse to all points north and east across the atlantic coast. So were in torington, krk krr connecticut right now and this snowfall is the lightest weve seen. The wind was so strong. As im walking on this sidewalk, there is sidewalk down here. Its very difficult because just so much snow. Now, check out the roadways. This is a main artery. You can see its fairly plowed, but right next to it getting on to route 8 its very difficult to see the roads. Now, being out here for so long, the snowfall has been coming down about 1 inch, 1 1 2 inches every hour. Up and down the northeast for sure. Over in bucks county, the scene quite peaceful in perkosie. Falling lightly there on to the trees making for quite the picturesque scene. Also mass transit too with delays out there. There have been a lot of mass transit modifications due to delays. The train 83 t is running 40 minutes late, bus route 65 and 25 are still suspended. The bus route 1 has resumed service. Taking a look at the schuylkill, road ways are still mostly wet, but the concern will be when the overnight lows start to fall to freezing, icy conditions for the commute. Theres colder air coming in on northwest winds and were about to get into nightfall. Remember the sun sets a little later. You got a little bit extra time to clear that snow and ice before it gets dark. At the shore we finally have a land breeze. The west wind. So no more coastal flooding. The ocean is 41, and boy did they get wind, up to 65mileanhour wind gusts seaside heights, 60 at lewis, delaware. This one right into reading. Just like i told george a little while ago, not a real heavy one, but its snowing. Coming into coatesville past east nottingham about to go into newark, delaware. Thats the big storm. Now maine with a lot of snow. Tomorrow weve got wind, 20 to 30, gusts to 40 plus and look at these temperatures. Not even reaching 30 with the wind on top of it. Its the middle of march, huh . 28 melwin, got that in sh wangsville. 25 degrees after a low of 15. 27 in robbinsville. Might actually get to 30 at the jersey shore tomorrow. And this weekend all right gets a little bit milder but we still dont get to normal. We have a chance of some rain or snow showers on saturday, a fairly weak system there, and the tenday forecast shows these below normal temperatures all the way through the weekend. Weve been around a lot of neighborhoods. I dont want to leave all of you out in south jersey. Lets go there right now. Not a lot of snow. Berlin 2. 8, not a lot of snow falling there, but it made for a mess all day today. A moderate impact below freezing temperatures tonight, icy roads, treacherous travel, breezy winds, branches still falling down and the wind chill from 5 to 15 is what it feels like. Today or at least this week is a pretty big anniversary, the anniversary of the blizzard of 88, 1888, were you there, glenn, for that one . I was just a little kid back then. I dont remember too well. I do remember the earliest big snowstorm i remember was 1960. So that beats all of you. So ive seen some big snows and just a month after i started here channel 10 was the blizzard of 96 where we had 30 inches of snow. What a time to earn your chops. Now, when i was a kid, the snow was way up there. Thats what i remember of the blizzard of 96. No question. But day ten is when we get to 50s finally . Hey, maybe. Maybe, there we go, right . Not unusual for a storm to leave damage to home and property in its wake. And the Pennsylvania State Attorney Generals Office warns this is a time when scammers are looking to take advantage of you. Nbc 10 responds reporter Harry Hairston shows what to watch out for. Reporter todays storm left icecoated power lines and snow mounded on rooftops, all things that can damage your property. I recently just bought a home. Reporter walter brown says since he purchased his home hes been contacted by companies he doesnt know offering deals, but all deals arent necessarily good deals. Now that the storm is over, brown believes he may hear from more contractors. Yeah, you know, with the wind, you know, with the siding, some issues sometimes you have to be careful with people just trying to scam you. Reporter Consumer Protection Officials Say beware of contractors wanting to fix damage to your home after a storm. Protect yourself, watch out for contractors you didnt call before coming to your home. If you hire a contractor, get a contract. Make sure every detail is spelled out such as cost for materials and labor. Also insist on a start and end date. Plus dont pay in full until the job is complete. Drastically different wintry scenes depending where you are in our region digging out from heavy snow in allentown and reading, cleebing up in philadelphia and delaware, clearing trees in moorstown and dealing with flooding in mar gate and up and down the shore. The biggest concern for our area tonight is the refreeze that will mean dangerous driving conditions out there, along the jersey shore flooding is the big issue with businesses and homes dealing with the damage at this point. And tonight more than 51,000 customers are still without power after heavy snow and ice knocked down branches and power lines.
