To condemn that and discourage it. Nbcs Steve Handelsman has the latest from the key state of florida. Reporter its a good turnout, marco rubio hopes that can save him. Dont stay home. No one stays home. We dont know how close this is going to be. Reporter many say their votes go to donald trump. Because i think that hes a person who can change this country. I want to see somebody strong, a strong president. Not a weak one like we have four eight years. Reporter the current president weighed in not naming trump. Our country has to toughen up. Reporter john kasich could take all of ohios delegates. Were going to win. I feel terrific. Reporter and if trump does lose ohio he might end up short of the delegates to lock the nomination. Ted cruz, kasich, rubio or others could fight for it at the convention. Hillary clintons road to the democratic nomination looks smoother. Ive gotten more votes than anybody including donald trump. Bernie sanders winning ohio today could stretch out the race. That for Republican Marco Rubio could end tonight. Im Steve Handelsman, nbc news, miami. For further analysis were joined by lester holt who is live in new york. Thanks for being here thisps afternoon. Of course everyones focused on the winner take all republican primaries in florida and ohio. If donald trump sweeps those states tonight obviously that would be dare i say huge for him. But would that mean he is a lock for the republican nomination . Well, it would put him in a situation hed need to get about 52 of remaining delegates moving forward. Presumably under that scenario rubio would have dropped out and so it is not a done deal but he certainly has a strong likelihood of accomplishing that goal. Now if he loses ohio things change dramatically because he would need to get about 60 of remaining delegates in what would likely at that point be a threeway race if john kasich is victorious in his home state today. So not a lock but again, if he were to sweep all of the States Donald trump would be well on his way toward getting the number of delegates for the nomination. On the democratic side we know Hillary Clinton is leading Bernie Sanders but she says she doesnt trust the polls after that big upset in michigan last week. Sanders cut into her lead in ohio. Could we have a potential upset in the Buckeye State and expect the unexpected tonight . Well, ohio, missouri, illinois, those midwest states, industrial states, this is a big test, watch carefully whether sanders can continue that magic that he had in michigan, in those midwest states. Now, that doesnt mean that he would necessarily top clinton in the delegate count because she may do well elsewhere and she is far ahead. But it certainly would keep this race competitive to a point that is certainly uncomfortable for the clinton campaign. Lester holt, thanks for doing math for us as well.
