Or substance directed or suggested that mr. Comey stop investigating anyone. Reporter comey testified he was not fired because he had lost the confidence of the fbi, as the president claimed. By saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader, those were lies, plain and simple. Its my judgment that i was fired because of the russia investigation. Reporter a focus for republicans, the president never explicitly told comey to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn. I took it as a direction. I mean, this is the president of the united states. You may have taken it as a direction but thats not what he said. Correct. Reporter and regarding the president s tweeted threat suggesting that their conversations may have been recorded. Ive seen the dweet about tapes. I hope there are tape. Reporter comey said russians are coming after america and will try again. As you would imagine no shortage of reaction to all of this today. Lets go to nbc 10s lauren mayk who was the only local tv reporter inside todays hearing. She is live inside the hearing room right now. Lauren, thanks for being here. Describe the atmosphere in that room today. Reporter yeah, jim, this is where it happened. This right back here, this chair, this is where jim comey sat to address the committee but really he was addressing the entire nation. Ive seen him testify before back when he testified in front of the House Intelligence Committee and i can tell you that this time there was a little bit less formality sometimes as he was speaking because he was talking about his conversations with the president. You can tell when hes being very guarded, when he is being the fbi director, and hes talking about investigations and hes trying to choose his words very carefully, but it did seem as he talked about his own notes, the way he went about things, recounting stories of the way he talked to whether it was the attorney general or the president , that he was a little tls a1 qq1 less2ch formal thann he was talking about those investigations. Now, i spoke with both republicans and democrats afterwards, we heard from both republicans and democrats after this and the chair and the vice chair of this committee they were being a little bit guarded. They didnt take any questions but they came out and they made some statements and they did say that this does not end their investigation. That it now continues from here, taking in everything that director former director comey said and then next week they will be working with bob muller the special counsel to then work on making sure that both investigations, both the congressional one, the senate one and also the special counsel one can both go forward at the same time. Jim. Lauren, much work still to come. Talk to me about who else was inside that packed room. Who was there . You know, up here of course you had the committee members. Not just reporter hes actually not on the committee but he did get to be here today and ask some questions and then jim comey of course. Here you had guests including the former u. S. Attorney Preet Bharara from new york, he was in the audience here, that actually caused a little bit of a stir n that back row there were seats reserved for members, for congressional members if they wanted to come. Then those tables, thats where the press sat, i sat over there by the wall. And then in theda n back you ce there actually arent that many seats for the public, but people could come in, the public could come in, but i tell you most of those seats were taken up by interns, washington interns, who lined up13 . etju hours this morn, hundreds of them, down the hall, around the corner wanting to be here for history. Jim. Getting some real world experience there. Lauren mayk and our live uaz washington, d. C. Afternoon. Ahead at 4 30 now the world took in todays testimony that included watch parties at bars and restaurants, including some of the philly area. Join us for a look at that story coming up at 4 30. Lets send it back to my coanchor jacqueline london for a look at the rest of the news of the day. Well see you soon. Turning now to todays Sexual Assault trial. For the first time in court we are hearing cosbys side of the story but that account did not come from the comedian himself. Deanna durante has been in the courtroom from the beginning of this trial. Reporter bill cosby will not take the stand in his own defense, however, the jury heard his words today from a Police Statement he game in 2005 where he talks about his relationship with Andrea Constand, even supplying them with the pills he says he gave her that night. Cosby sits in his usual seat on the edge of a crowded defense table, at times looking to the ceiling and twirling his cane as the detective who has been on the case since 2005 reads a Police Statement. In it cosby talks about Andrea Constand saying she felt he had a learning disorder, says he pushed her to take up a career in Sports Broadcasting and when it comes to sexual contact he says he always initiated it, but andrea was a willing participant. He also says in a Casino Hotel Room the two held each other on the bed for two hours and talked. Constand testified yesterday saying the two were on the bed together but barely touched and only cosby laid down. Cosby told police at an evening 2005 meeting at his home he and constand engaged in petting, touching, kissing. At one point he says he placed his hands under her shirt and undid her bra, when andrea asked him to stop he complied. He said he was never interested in sexual intercourse, he simply enjoyed the petting. The jury saw those small pink pills in a bag after they had been tested by a lab. Cosby also tells police that he felt Andrea Constands mother was hostile towards him because he ended the relationship with her daughter and didnt thank him for a tshirt they gave her. The jury is hearing more from police on the stand this afternoon. Deanna durante, nbc 10 news. Turning to our weather now, a great day for a jog or rooid on your bike. In philadelphia now we are seeing the clouds thin out and a little bit of blue showing up. Its 68 degrees that east wind keeping things on the cooler side and as we go toward the Lehigh Valley we see temperatures in the low 70s, dropping to near 60 degrees by 10 00. So its going to drop pretty quickly, but the thing is that it got a little bit warmer than even the philadelphia area for the most part. Reading at 71, merits town at 70, allentown 72, whitehall 72, bethlehem 72. 71 in philadelphia. Now, the big warm up has started, did start a little bit today helped out by the clouds and east wind. The east wave starts on sunday. Weve been telling you about this for over a week and this is one of the reasons we do tenday forecasts because sometimes we can see such dramatic changes that far ahead of time. The rain, well, looks like its going toqnf continue to be dry it looks like about a weeks worth next wednesday looks like the first legitimate chance of getting any kind of showers. And sunny days starting tomorrow, were going to see a lot of them. Watch the temperature going up, up, up, up, up. And here were talking monday and tuesday, thats very close to record levels. And were not necessarily talking about really, really high humidity, but record heat after temperatures in the 60s, thats quite a change. You can see how dry it is to our west, the clouds are thicker toward the coast and thats because of this storm. It came up from the gulf of mexico and this is what weve been talking about for a while and keeping the clouds in, the cool weather at the shore today, but thats a lot of rain out there and didnt miss by a whole lot. And as it moves away thats going to allow the sunshine to return. So tomorrow were going to see all that sunshine, a day like we havent seen in a little while. 82 in fair mount, 83 tack knee, 79 he will win, reading at 80, allentown 78, easton 78 degrees. Lots of sunshine, relatively low humidity, not much wind. A lot of people are going to love this potential start to the weekend. And at the shore 72 degrees, a bit of a sea breeze after warming up a little bit more than we got today. Su t it didnt get much above 62 at the beaches in new jersey today. 81 at avalon and at Rehoboth Beach. Now, as we head into the weekend, okay, the temperature is going to go up, philadelphia we showed you the 88 and 92. Up to 94 in the Lehigh Valley on sunday. So they may actually get hotter than philadelphia and at the jersey shore temperatures getting into the 80s on sunday so it should be warmer sunday than saturday but thats a nice relief from what were seeing in the inland areas. Now, Rehoboth Beach and delaware beaches are going to be hotter than the jersey shore this weekend. A southwest wind is more of m land breeze here and its going to get hot but its going to be sunny saturday and sunday at the delaware beaches and wildwood 75 on saturday, under to 82 on sunday, weve got sunshine there and Atlantic City up to 84 degrees on sunday. He also admitted he leaked information to the press through a friend. I like the truth. I want to know. People should know the truth, bottom line. Reporter so both on the philadelphia side and here in south jersey we can tell you those lunch crowds they were pretty strong today, some people leaving the office a little bit early or stretching their lunch break a little late so they could listen and watch. The question is did they take sides or did they listen with an opennkc mind and open heart fro the beginning. We asked that question, we will share with you some of those answers coming up at 5 00 and at 6 00. For now live in camden, im cindy long. Jim back to you. There was one lighthearted moment during todays testimony, a senator asked comey about a meeting between comey and the president that has been the topic of controversy and comey president called an invited him to dinner. And i said whatever works for you, sir, and then i hung up and i had to call my wife and break a date with her, i was supposed night and thats thats one of the all time great excuses for breaking a date. In retrospect i love spending time with my wife, i wish i had been there that night. Some laughter in the hearing room there. Weve got much more ahead from here in washington. I will be back at 5 00 and we will have an interview with lester holt and then lester will be back of course for an entire half hour live from the Nations Capital. Nbc nightly news is tonight at 6 30. For now we toss it back to jacqueline london for a look at more news making headlines today. Urng it to our first alert weather thews beach down at ca may is empty right now but you can expect it to be packed this weekend with warm weather on the way. After a week of gloom in june a lot of people are looking forward to a change giving us glenrr;n hurricane schwartz wi details for us. Glen. Jackie, this is going to be a good weekend at the shore and i soon as we get rid of these clouds we will start to see the changes coming. Well, these clouds are thinning out as we look to the western sky and were seeing some blue out there. So conditions are already starting to improve as you can see the back edge of those clouds finally moving from west to east. Theyre still pretty thick toward the shore and we have the rain not too far offshore, but its obviously missing us and going off to the east, but that east wind has kept the shore pretty cold. Its 60 degrees in Atlantic City marina, 62 Atlantic City international, 70 wilmington, 73 reading and 74 lancaster. So youve just got to get away from that east wind and7 could see how things are going to be warming up and thats whats going to happen. Starting tomorrow. And that will jump us up probably a good 10 degrees. You will notice that kind of difference and then saturday and sunday even hotter. By sunday were into the 90s and it looks like we are going to start a heat wave. It will be cooling down overnight, i have the skies clear, temperatures even down into the 40s in some of the suburbs, but its going to get hot and we will see how hot and for how long coming up. Weve seen after graduations all week long around our area. In just a couple days it might be a little hot for one of those black gowns, glen. Especially early next week. We will be talking about near record heat and after these days in the 60s its going to be quite a change. We continue to see a lot of clouds around but some peeks of sunshine and we are going to be seeing that the clouds are going to break up and move out as we head through the night. We still have that northeast wind at the shore, so temperature cant warm up very much. 62 cape may point, upper township, 60 who will gate, 61 summers point, 62 degree ocean, yeah, you need a wind thats a land breeze if you want to get like even into the 70s. Compared to this time yesterday we were a few degrees warmer, not a lot, except for coatesville, 7 degrees warmer because they are farther away from the ocean, had a little bit more sunshine. Now, the cool air thats been with us is leaving and the hot air building up in the middle of the country is going to be coming to the east. There is no doubt about that. There is no doubt that its going to last for more than a couple of days. The question of course is going to be how long it stays here. In the case of this system, which happens a lot, were looking for a back door front coming in from new england rather than something coming in from the west putting an end to this. That would be more like the middle of next week, that would also provide a chance for some showers. You can see the clouds here thicker toward the coast, thinnest to the west. You can see burkes county, western Chester County with a lot of sunshine right now and there is a lot of rain offshore, but that of course is moving away. Now, as we go through the night tonight we have clearing conditions, it will cool down of course, temperatures into the 40s by morning in many of the suburbs but thats not going to last. So first thing in the morning, yeah, it may be a little chilly, may need a little bit of a jacket but its going to warm up very quickly tomorrow and we will be close to 80 degrees even by noontime. In the afternoon, look at this, sunshine everywhere. Havent seen that in a while. We are going to be seeing more of that as we head into the weekend. Now, it will be cooler at the jersey shore but not a tremendous amount cooler, especially on sunday, 82 degrees is pretty warm for the shore. And then the sea breeze comes in in the afternoon. So it might be warmest at the jersey shore in the midday hours and not in the afternoon. You can see there is the heat wave, sunday, monday, tuesday. Wednesday its still a question as to whether it will get up near 90 degrees depending on that front coming down that also would increase the chance of showers. Look at that, just as soon as you see those ps in there phillies are coming home. All of a sudden the pattern changes. Are they jiksed . Whats going on . Well, we already know that. Now the weather doesnt help. This time the weather isnt enjoyed this week of the gloom and doom, hope they wont complain when it gets to the 90s. What are the chance of that. You probably hear it all the time. Too hot, too cold. Cant win. Thank you, glenn. We all have that one teacher who sticks out among all the others. Welcome back to class.
