About an hour ago the visibility was really down here. This is i95 in south philly. You can see the cameras shaking because of this strong gusty winds. The temperature, of course, critical. 34 in philadelphia. About as warm as its been all day. Not going to take much to get it back below freezing. Allentown and pottstown already below freezing. Its just going to keep getting colder and colder. And that northwest wind keeps bringing in the colder air. Its still a 30 to 40mileanhour wind gust. We had some places gusting over 40 miles an hour, even 50 miles an hour this morning in lewis, delawa delaware. By 7 00 a. M. 22 in philadelphia feeling like 8. Well tell you when it might be warming up, and it is not going to be any time soon. Coming up in a few minutes. The most snowfall weve seen is up in the Lehigh Valley. Thats where Randy Gyllenhaal is. We saw you helping with that car that was stuck earlier. Reporter they eventually got that car out of there but thats basically the story of the day. The roads have been terrible and they still pretty much ar, as you can see. Some of the neighborhoods in bethlehem beginning to get cleaned up. The average is about a foot of snow. At the airport they recorded about 13 inches. The cleanup here continues, but officials in allentown, urging people for now until these roads are clear to stay off these streets. During the worst of the winter storm, the snow and wind combined to make whiteout conditions on the roads. Contractor bob lavarr started his ship at 2 00 a. M. Trying to clear streets in allentown. We got heavy winds. It was snowing sideways. Reporter but even the heaviest 18wheelers got stuck, tires spinning out, and these guys in their tiny sedan couldnt get far, stuck in their own neighborhood unable to even park the car. The Lehigh Valley hit hardest by this storm capping off a very unusual winter. This whole week has been nice outside and snowy and like nice and cold. Reporter and now . Now just cold and snow. Hopefully spring can come soon. So i dont want to deal with snow anymore. Reporter thats the story for a lot of people here sick of all this snow even after 12 hour of it. We are starting to see people venture out of their homes starting to clean up. Were hearing reports about snowfall similar to avalanches in some places like wyoming county. Much more coming up at 5 30. Randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. Thats serious snow. Downed trees and power lines have left thousands of people in the dark in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. Cydney long is live in audubon. You found people county by county across south jersey trying to get their lights back on. Reporter jackie, thats right. They definitely want the lights on, but more importantly theyre going to want the heat because it is still cold out here. The good news is psg e and other contractors have just arrived out here but they literally have their work cut out for them. I want you to see this tree. It was split right down the middle from the ice on the top of those branches. So to the left over here, it did damage to this home, but look further down the street right here on walnut, as you can see all these crews working out here, it took down those power and utility lines like a domino effect. Ive been hearing fire sirens all morning. Reporter kurt persashman Presses Forward with his job to clear the sidewalks but audubon is littered with downed trees and ice covered branches. One womans car crushed. Im dropping branches in my backyard right and left. So as the ice builds up, its just bringing branches down. Reporter lake drive is shut down. This tree brought down phone and cables line. Theres been a tremendous amount of trees and wires down. Not just in aw u bon, manayunk. Reporter audubons fire company responded to 25 downed tree and downed poles this morning alone. You never know. With the wind picking up just as it is now, were standing under large trees. If you start hearing it snapping, get to shelter, get to the center of your house or if you feel that your house is in danger, get out of your house. Reporter some will have to spend the night out as nearly 1,000 here in audubon alone remain powerless. Psg e has their hands full and some of the timeframes coming out, these people will be without power for some time. Reporter we heard governor christie estimating it could take until the end of the day tomorrow for power to be restored across new jersey. Folks in audubon are being told 12 hours or so. Psg e has 7,000 outages at last check with them here in the county and we did hit four to five different towns, guys, over two counties this afternoon to show you this of this similar damage across both Camden County but also Burlington County. Well have more on that when we see you again coming up at 5 00. For now residents like these out here, they are waiting to know when theyll be able to get warm and get the lights on again. Doesnt want to click forward for me. There we go. Well, let me just go ahead and verbally tell you. They picked up 24 inches, there we go, at mt. Pocono. That was pretty much the highest amount of snow. Drop down to nazareth, 12. 5, and you get to down and it tapers off. And were still looking at perhaps a quick shot of snow out there across the area. We do have a moderate impact for tonight that well be looking at. It will stay frozen tonight and tomorrow. Very treacherous travel. Breezy winds out there that will continue to bring down branches. Well see wind chills that dip down between 5 and 15. You need all the winter gear tomorrow before we warm up by the end of the week. Still cold out there. Taking a live look at a snowcovered center city. This is market street. You can see the snow on the roof tops and the sidewalks plowed off the roads as well. Mitch blacher continues our coverage. This is columbus boulevard, one of the major roads in the eastern part of the city. Some of the side streets are passable but theyre certainly slushy. In center city, a snow plow caravan rounds broad and heads for market. Through the storm they kept philadelphias main emergency routes clear. Pelts you right in the face. It hurts. The snow is falling at a rate of 3 inches per hour. Strong winds are expected up to 60 miles per hour. And the storm brought heavy rain to parts of virginia and richmond. This all happened just after 11 00 this morning. Everyone here evacuated safely. Investigators are still working to find out if this collapse was weather related. Such a mess there. Washington is doing its homework today as it pores over new numbers pertaining to the Republican Health plan. A congressional budget report projects the plan would reduce the deficit by 337 million over a decade, but that same report says it would increase the ranks of the uninsured by 14 Million People next year alone and 24 million over a decade. The white house disagrees with those estimates. They didnt look at all the regulations that we believe ought to go away. They didnt look at purchase across state lines or medical malpractice reform. Critics claim republicans are rushing their Healthcare Plan through congress. The House Budget Committee is scheduled to review it thursday. Newark police now tell us a woman who claims he was kidnapped and robbed made it all up. Police charged brenda aydin today with false reporting. She told them last night that a man with an accent forced her into her apartment and stole her jewelry. She made those accusations after three actual kidnappings happened in the area last month. The lights are back on for 3,000 customers after a planned power outage last night in nicetown. It happened so workers could remove generators being used after a fire damaged the westmoreland substation last week. Coverage of the winter storm and the different impact its had on pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. Our First Alert Weather Team warned about the flood threat at the shore. We saw it today when high tide came in. We saw some of that water slowly starting to recede earlier. What are conditions like where you are right now . We see the surf behind you. Thats right. This is what i want to talk about. This storm still causing big waves to crash into the beach here in ocean city, over on the mainland theyre beginning to dry out after a soggy day of flood i flooding Atlantic City police and fire used their high water trucks to get stranded drivers on flooded streets. The Fire Department shared this photo of a rescue in progress. Good you have an all wheel drive vehicle that does well in the snow, its not a boat. Reporter Shane Schaeffer thought hed pick up some uber fares on his day off but decided to cancel the trip requests when he saw that. Once i saw the amount of flooding going on, i decided it probably wasnt a smart idea to take my vehicle through that amount of water. Reporter the strong northeasterly wind gusts had water crashing into the back bay, combine that with high tide and you get this. Even the sidewalks werent safe for travel today. If youre from here, born and raised, you know which streets to avoid and which streets to go down. Reporter same story in ocean city where barricades blocked the stubborn water slow to drain off the center of the island. While a break in the rain is good news, theres still another high tide to contend with late tonight and the winds havent died down yet. The water went here. It went down but its going go back up. Reporter and the winds have changed out here in a good way. Some of those winds off of the back bays and getting the water off of the mainland. The power issues have not been as significant as the flooding down here, and they are working to restore the power that has gone out as quick as possible. Were live in ocean city. Drew smith, nbc 10 news. So many issues with this storm, the winds, high tide, flooding, refreezing tonight. Thats the worry tonight is the cold. Right, glenn . Its not just one night either. This is going to happen several days in a row. Melting during the day, refreezing at night. Heres a picture you dont see very often. The International Airport with no airplanes. Even when theyre stuck and they cant take off, theyre at least parked. They take them out before the storm so you dont get stranded with the planes. And so it will take a while to get everything back. You can see some snow on the rooftops, but the visibility has improved in the last hour as that snow shower has moved through. North and west, we continue to have the snow and ice. Its going to refreeze solid tonight. The i95 corridor, weve had a combination of snow and slush. That ice is going to refreeze also. And at the shore, the offshore winds that you just saw, that calms down the ocean so you dont have to worry about coastal flooding for tomorrow mornings high tide. Philly is 34 with cloudy skies now. We have below freezing temperatures in many areas. Some of the suburbs already down into the 20s with a lot of snow on the ground. Lehigh valley obviously has a lot of snow on the ground as well. Lets go into those neighborhoods in the p. A. Suburbs, chester, bucks, montgomery counties, obviously this is an area that had a significant amount of snow and some ice and a little bit of melting this afternoon. Exton and malvern at 32, st. Davids and gladwyne is 32. North wales, elroy, new hope also at 30. Warrington is down to 29. These places will all go into the teens tonight. Everything is going to freeze solid. Heres the way its going to feel, too. Thats not going to be any picnic. As we go through the night tonight, feeling like Single Digits again. Middle of march here. Not supposed to be quite that cold. We didnt have many days that cold in the whole winter. There we are wednesday afternoon. Still feeling like Single Digits in pottstown, doylestown, westchester, allentown. Thats kind of a frigid day for this time of the year. Then as the wind dies down tomorrow, it wont be quite as bad for the rest of the week. Thats still pretty cold. Doylestowne, allentown feeling like 5, 5. Thats the band of snow that went through philly continues to move to the east. Thats the good thing. Moved out of most of bucks county. Still some in the lower portion, trenton getting a little bit of snow as well and theres the big storm still pounding new england. The wind is blowing off shore. These are sustained winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour. And what are we going to see in the next few days, more winter cold. Look at the suburbs that had all that snow. Theyre fairly getting into the 30s and the places that get into the 40s are going to freeze at night as well. Meteorologist tammy souza is breaking it down region by region. The problem on the jersey shore went that they got snow. And it was sleet and the ice that fell. You have to understand that this is snowfall totals, but it does include sleet and the freezing rain. So its a little bit deceptive, but this is how it comes in being reported. 3. 1 inches in burlington. 2. 9 in egg harbor, sea isle picking up 2. 8 and 2. 1 in long beach. The problem here, the impact, it will be similar. Ill put that impact map up again. A moderate impact. Below freezing and icy roads, treacherous travel. Thats going to be the biggest problem there because all of that water thats not sea water is basically going to freeze and its going to freeze on everything and make things even worse than they are right now. Snow blowers out in full force in ridley park trying to get rid of that snow and ice. And people still doing it the oldfashioned way, digging in with their shovels. And it is heavy. Strong waves have caused the beach to erode here in north wildwood. And brandnew video within the last ten minutes of the pretty rough surf out there in Atlantic City. Theres surfers out there, jackie. What in the world . Yeah, all right. They like the waves. But its got to be cold out there. We also saw that earlier street flooding in that area. Thats starting to recede. High tide is over, but not before some people got stuck in their cars on the streets at the shore. With the sun going to fall in a few hours now, the temperatures will drop and that will make it worse for the roads still covered in snow. Our meteorologists have been tracking the freeze in your neighborhood. Lets begin with glenn hurricane schwartz who is monitoring the icing concerning. Aside from what fell last night and this morning, weve got some snow showers right now. That adds more moisture to the roads and as it gets colder, that can freeze up, too. We have one band of snow that is in Burlington County now, that moved through philadelphia. But theres another band, thats coming through Lancaster County now. Thats headed toward berks county and Chester County within the next hour. This is the one in our area now. Trenton is just about to see the snow end. Pemberton getting it pretty hard. Jackson about to see some heavier snow showers as well. Look at this. Pemberton right in the middle of it. South hampton right in the middle of it. Browns mills is going to see that snow increase within the next few minutes. At the center of the main storm moves up to the northeast. Now, it tracked so close to the coast, thats what brought the warmer air up to create the sleet and the freezing rain in parts of the area and limit some of those snow totals. Now its 34 degrees in philadelphia, below freezing already to the north and everybodys going to go down at least into the 20s. Many places in the teens late tonight. But the wind is out of the northwest. Look at this gust at philadelphia. 45 mileanhour right now. And we gusted over 50 in parts of the area. Ill let you know about the wind, when thats going to die down and when the temperatures going to go back up in a few minutes. Were getting more right now. As glen just showed you theres light snow showers moving through the area. At the oem, office of Emergency Management in center city, 6. 8 inches. The airport officially 3. 9. But a lot of these readings coming in between 12 00 and 1 00, there was still some snow after that. We get up here to bustleton and were looking at 6 inches. For the most part a lot of the area in philadelphia picking up between 3 and 6 inches of snow plus all that sleet. That was downright nasty out there. Take a look hour by hour. This is the system and well be watching the temperatures as they continue to stay below the freezing mark. As glenn was saying tonight well get down quite low any moisture anywhere outside is going to freeze and make for slippe slippery, treacherous conditions tomorrow. Thats why penndot crews are rushing right now to clear those roads before the freeze hits tonight. Deanna durante joins us live in conshohocken with the progress the road crews are making. Youve seen the conditions change over the hours. How it is out there . Reporter well, weve driven from king of prussia to conshohocken taking the back roads. At ridge and butler pikes, cars are coming through. The roads are wet, which is if youll be heading out, which again is not advisable, that you do take it easy. Sometimes even a plow isnt enough to get you on the road. A lot of people out there that shouldnt be driving. Reporter and for those people Donny Hoffman is there. We met him this morning at the king of prussia wawa. These are what the roads looked like as we drove there this morning. Despite plow after plow off the side of the road, embankments, ditches, pulling them out. To safe ground. Reporter hoffman sent us video after video of cars he responded to that were off the road. We found some, too. A stuck septa bus blocked the entrance to the king of prussia mall. Workers used shovels to get it free. A couple of plows were stopped on route 23. Wouldnt be out here if we didnt have to be. Theyre crazy. Stay home. A state of emergency. Reporter in which others are not. For those who had to be out and got stuck, Donny Hoffman was still working the roads. Im going to get one now. Reporter im standing here on a pretty tall mound of snow here. On some of the roads weve seen that some of the water is melting into the streets even though crews have come by here and salted, it will freeze up again. So again, if youre going out, take it easy. Mostly the majors are mostly wet, but when it comes to the secondary roads and the side streets mostly slushy and pretty snowy in some cases. This is one of the areas that got the most snow, route 611 near doylestown. Youre seeing the roads pretty shiny from the wet conditions, but here taps big problem. W as we get dark and these temperatures fall below freezing, were going to start to see some travel conditions for tomorrow morning, theyll be pretty hazardous. Watch for that ice. Also, too, we have a report of flooding in Atlantic City. Ill show you this in the next couple of minutes. This major winter storm was a warmup up in the poconos where theyve been waiting for this all season. The skiers, snowboarders, theyre all about it. Candleback mountain resort. Theyve been waiting in line for those chair lifts all day. The skiers, the snowboarders are loving their spring break on the slopes. Heres another look at the severe flooding down the shore. You can see the tires just spinning right there as theb r4 driver tried to free the bus on lancaster avenue. The bus did break free a few minutes after this. In berks county a snow deep enough to break out the snow blower. Check out the scene in reading where some of the heaviest snow is expected today. Some streets here are plowed, others still covered in snow. In cape may county, take a look at the flooded streets in stone harbor. A viewer sent us this video which came in just a short time ago. You can hear the winds, too. The location is just a block or so from the beach. New castle county now. The sun sets later now this time of year and the march sun is higher in the sky, pretty powerful, even goes through the clouds and helps melt any kind of snow or ice during the day. As soon as it gets dark, forget about it, its just another night. Were looking toward the western sky because there are more snow showers back there and we want to see if any of them will be coming this way. Any more snow . Yeah, we do have snow showers that will add a little bit to the icing threat. Still hazardous driving in many areas especially in the places that got a lot of snow. And tonights freeze, its best to clear that snow and ice before dark. It will be a harder job tomorrow morning, i guarantee you. 34 philadelphia now, sustained winds of 21 miles per hour. 27 in the p. A. Suburbs. Its the middle of march for crying out loud. The average high is in the low 50s. So we are way below average. Now lets head into philadelphia where its 34 degrees a t the airport, but its 30 already in west mt. Airy, 32 in kingsessing. Up toward the northeast, bustleton, torresdale those temperatures are above freezing. Theyll cool down more than south philly will. Everybody will feel like Single Digits close to zero in places like pottstown and westchester and allentown and with the clearing skies, if the wind dies down, lets say tomorrow night, we can see some really low temperatures in these areas that have a lot of snow. Now, the feelslike temperatures even for tomorrow night, way down there Single Digits in many places. So this is not just one day or one night of this. Thats unusual, too. Generally after a march storm you get a day or two of cold at the most, then it starts warming up and everything melts. We got this area of snow showers thats moved out of bucks county now. Moving out of Burlington County. But weve got another one back toward lancaster and thats coming right into berks county right now and just about to come into western portions of Chester County.
