Lets begin with nbc 10s Ted Greenberg with the challenging conditions firefighters face and what may have stashrted the fir ted. Reporter a heartbreaking scene in new jersey, capital city. Investigators believe it started at the far end of this block, then spread. But they want to make sure that all utilities are off before they start sifting through the debris to try to figure out what sparked the flames that took such a heavy toll on this neighborhood three days before thanksgiving. Their clothing, their keep sakes, their community. A block of nine houses in trenton now gone. The pajama under this jacket, everything. The fire was too much. We couldnt take nothing, we couldnt do nothing. The cars started getting on fire. The wheels started popping from the heat. Reporter three people went to the hospital, including a firefighter with an injured leg. Five of the houses collapsed. Siding on nearby homes melted. Firefighters say winds were gusty. But their biggest challenge came from falling power lines. The fire from that time had spread, and there was no water on it because of the safety issue with the electricity. Reporter it took firefighters four hours to get the upper hand to the flames. Utility crews had to shut off power and gas to surrounding homes and businesses. Got my son, put a blanket on him and ran out of the house. Reporter her son is 3 years old. He wants to go back home. Theres nothing to go back to. Reporter the red cross tells me its assisting more than two dozen people from the neighborhood. Many of those who lost their homes are now staying with relatives and friends. Authorities tell me it is very likely that this entire row of homes will have to be demolished. Live in trenton, Ted Greenberg, nbc 10 news. From trenton to woodbury, gloucester county, where seven people are without a home because of a massive fire. Neighborhoods say the flames jumped, level one home, destroying another, and damaging a third. Nbc 10s cydney long joins us live from the scene in woodbury with a man who managed to escape. Reporter that victim feels very fortunate, lucky to be alive. He told me he thanks god for having his back. The homes are owned by a church here. You can tell the sheer power of the flames here this morning by whats left and what isnt. He didnt hear any of the commotion until one of his roommates yelled, theres a fire. It was the noise that woke many from a sound sleep. It sounded like an explosion. Reporter residents, still in their pajamas, ran outside. Armed with their cellphones, they dialed 911 and took these photos and video. They watched the flames jump to two adjacent homes. Ian picking was still sound asleep in the basement, one of seven church employees who lived here. I came running outside. Everyone was outside, and the one guy who jumped out the window. Reporter he remembers dragging one of his neighbors to safety. This tree was on fire, the leaves were burning. The fire was really big. It was a very powerful wind happening. Reporter dozens of neighbors used guard hoses to put out small fires carried across the street by the burning embers. That bush oar over there caught on fire for a moment. Reporter firefighters played a waiting game with pse g to shut off gas and electric. His fear . Electrocution. The wires are still hot on the ground. You cant do an effective fire attack and its endangering the firefighters. Reporter pickens and his family were in awe of the power of the flames. God was taking care of me. Reporter pse g says it took less than an hour to get the electric and gas shut off to this block. Four of the seven people who got out of this middle home do remain hospitalized. That includes the man who jumped from that second story window. Weve been checking with the church and reaching out to the pastor to see how hes doing, as soon as we find out well let you know. They say a masked man walked into the city blue store on north broad street and told the clerk to open the cash register, then pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the worker in the arms and hands. A man talked about joining isis and carrying out an attack on times square. Hes from yemen and a legal resident to the united states. Police say he wanted his attack on times square to be like the one in nice, france back in july. Thats when a terrorist drove a truck through the streets while crowds celebrated bastille day. 86 people were killed. More than 400 injured. Now to the transition to trump. Were getting a better idea who is being considered for top positions in the new administration as we await more announcements. Its been another full day of meetings in trump tower of new york. Oklahoma governor mary fallon is being considered to head the interior department. Her meeting with mr. Trump came after he talked with former u. S. Senator scott brown of massachusetts. Brown indicated he is under consideration to become Veterans Affairs secretary. Mr. Trumps Campaign Manager said things are progressing smoothly but theres no rush. You have to take your time. The Lieutenant Governor joined the governor for the meeting today in trenton. Its unclear what they discussed. Yesterday the governor and donald trump met for 30 minutes. When asked if christie could get a job in the administration, the president elect told reporters hes very talented guy. Governor christie says he plans to finish his term which ends in january of 2018. Septembers deadly train crash in hoboken is prompting action if federal regulators. This week theyll issue a safety advisory stressing the importance of sleep apnea screening and treatment for train operators. The engineer in the hoboken crash was found to have sleep apnea. His train slammed into the terminal, killing a woman. The lawyer of a bucks county man accused in a sex abuse case involving six amish sisters is speaking out for the first time. Today lee kaplan waived his preliminary hearing. That means the court can move forward with his trial. Kaplan was originally arrested in july. Authorities claim the feasterville man fathered two children with a then14yearold girl who had been gifted to him by her parents. Share with i say why he waived his preliminary hearing. Mr. Kaplan and i had discussed it before the hearing. He didnt want to put the girls through any more trauma than theyve been put through by the commonwealth. Its another day of searching for several teenagers wanted in connection with the shooting of a Philadelphia Police officer. Officer Angelo Romero was shot in the hand while protecting his young son. He was offduty at the time. He was outside with his son when two or three teenagers opened fire at each other. The officer is at home recovering. And looking at the fbis data and talking to bank robbery experts, we discovered changes and patterns. When i started studying Bank Robberies, there were occasionally women involved. Reporter men still commit the vast majority of the crimes. But as of last year, the fbi says more than 8 are women. Nowadays, its possible to see one or two women. Reporter of more than 4,000 robberies nationwide last year, the fbi data shows the vast majority target bank Branch Offices in commercial districts, not the banks headquarters location. The security is pretty good there. Reporter the most dangerous day of the week for Bank Robberies is friday, and the most dangerous time, mornings between 9 and 11 00 a. M. Theyre not crimes with a lot of planning involved in them. Reporter not planned and not always committed by someone with a criminal past. Only one in every five bank robbers has done it before. The fbi says its determined that more than 1 3 are users of narcotics. What frequently is a characteristic is that one person commits a crime successfully, and then he has learned behavior. You are about to meet a group of customers, their stories are full of pain, disappointment, and hope for closure. Reporter denise whipples mother passed away on january 8th of this year, buried at the same cemetery where her grandparents and father are buried. I visit and say so long, until the next time. Reporter each time she visits her frustration amounts. She paid lifestone by stefan to engrave her mothers name and date of death on the headstone. He told me it would be done in a month. Reporter dozens of people have reached out to nbc 10 responds with similar stories. Some spoke with us in person, sharing their frustration and experiences with lifestone and other companies operated by the same owner. They make promises and they havent done anything. Theyve not just taken money. Theyre breaking hearts. Reporter no one at lifestone was available for comment. We tried catching up with the owner at a scheduled Court Appearance in upper darby. Some customers had sued lifestone for not delivering the services it promised. The day we were there, the owner never showed. How are you doing, sir, im Harry Hairston with nbc 10 responds. Reporter but his lawyer did. What does your client plan to do about some of these complaints that people are alleging he owes them thousands of dollars, some have waited months if not close to three years. Youre saying a whole lot of things that you cant substantiate. So im not going to respond. Reporter but the receipts we obtained from each name on our list showed they did pay lifestone, or an affiliated company. Should the public know, should others doing business with him know they may or may not get their property . Those individuals . They certainly should. Should the public . Its an open hearing. And they can know all that happens in litigation after it happens. Not before and not during. Afterwards. Reporter as we first reported last year, the Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection filed this lawsuit against the company and its owner, greg stefan. At the time the state claimed there were at least 50 plaintiffs. Are you satisfied with the Attorney Generals Office . No. No. It seems to be a system that dont work. They seem like they responded the same way the headstone people respond to me. They dont really care. Reporter the head of the States Bureau of Consumer Protection tells us her office is still building its case. Until they take the company to court, they cant stop the business from taking on new customers. Hes allowed to continue doing business until the court tells him to stop. Reporter the bureau could seek a temporary injunction, asking a judge to stop stefans businesses. That would be a decision we would have to make in our office. Reporter but she refuses to say if her office is even considering filing that motion, calling that information attorney work product. Meantime, whipple prays for closure and has this message for lifestone. I forgive you. Just do what you said you were going to do. Since we started reporting on lifestone, it has either refunded or delivered services to some families on the list. Other families have won court orders for refunds.
