A former philadelphia youth football coach who molested several young boys will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Today, a judge sentenced leon watson, jr. To 114 to 228 years in prison. Earlier this year, philadelphia jury convicted watson of sexually assaulting five of his players along with a developmentally disabled adult. He used to coach the raiders football team. Police arrested watson in 2013 after getting an anonymous tip. A cooler and cloudy start to the day. Nbc 10 here in northeast philadelphia this morning where this group took advantage of a break from the heat to play some football. There are some changes headed our way once again. How will the rain affect our weekend plans . We havent seen rain on a weekend in a long time. We are likely to see some this weekend. We got a oneday break, nice comfortable weather. Back to the west, those are rain showers in ohio and down into kentucky and that will be coming in tomorrow by this time tomorrow, it should be raining in a good bit of the area. So it will be a really nice evening as we get the skies clearing out, the humidity does not increase much until during the day tomorrow. So its really nice out there. At least 87 people are dead after a crane collapsed at the grand mosque in the muslim holy city of mecca. More than 180 people were hurt when part of a huge crane crashed through the mosques roof today. Officials still trying to figure out why the collapse happened but it was raining at the time with high gusty winds. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to arrive in the saudi city later this month for the annual muslim hajj pilgrimage. Authorities say a woman confessed to making a half Million Dollars of fake cancer claims. Cynthia clary was arraigned this morning. Prosecutors with the bucks county d. A. s office says she submitted fraudulent claims and forged documents over the course of two years to her insurance company, claiming both she and her husband had cancer. The District Attorney says she actually received more than 130,000 in payments. She reportedly told authorities she submitted the false claims so she could pay off her bills. New information this afternoon on that plane that crashed off the coast of new jersey yesterday. Investigators now saying there was no Radio Communication from the plane for the final two hours of that flight. The single engine muni m20 went down yesterday afternoon about seven miles off the coast of Atlantic City. It was flying into the Ac International airport from michigan. It was bad weather at the time and the coast guard has suspended its search now for the 68yearold pilot. He is believed to have been the only person on board. The cause of this crash remains under investigation. A Burlington County school got the allclear after a scare involving a fake grenade this morning. Police found this suspicious item near the playground of Wilbur Watts Intermediate School in the city of burlington. Emergency plans were put into place while the bomb squad checked it out. They discovered it was a replica hand grenade and no one was hurt. We are just over two weeks away from pope francis visit to philadelphia. Today we learned new information about the impact on law enforcement, emergency planners, hospitals and hotels as well. Nbc 10s keith jones is tracking these developments in philadelphia but our Team Coverage begins with Deanna Durante in conshohocken where we also learned the National Guard will be on patrol. Reporter yeah, about 300 members of the National Guard have been deployed and some of them will be here in conshohocken along the schuykill river trail. From where im standing to the Philadelphia Museum of art is about seven miles if you follow this trail. While county Officials Say they cant prevent people from riding or biking in to see the pope, they are certainly hoping that this will not be an option that they take. We will have citizens from the pennsylvania National Guard, Pennsylvania State police, Sheriffs Department Montgomery County and all the resources lower merion has. Reporter while the pope is in town he will be staying in lower merion. Thats a huge undertaking for police who are working with the secret service and 100 officers will be there for security and traffic control. We are bringing two helicopters into the area. One fixed wing aircraft. Reporter security in lower merion is a huge focus. Officials say the entire county is going to be impacted. It is critically important that people in Montgomery County sign up for an alert system you can get on your computer or phone. Reporter Officials Say huge concerns, traffic on major road and traffic jamming up side streets. The expressway will shut down at conshohocken, causing backups everywhere. All the highways are going to be impacted by the schuykill and other roads that are going to have temporary closures. Some ramps on 95 will be closed. You will have backups on 309, 202. We have route 23. Reporter planners are setting up food and water stations in case people are in gridlock for hours. Doctors will be in special outfitted vehicles equipped with medical supplies to reach those who may be stuck in traffic. Ems tents and popup hospitals will also be set up. The county has taken a number of precautions to make sure that we can treat a very large number of patients if need be. The center of that will be at lankenau hospital. Reporter the tents will have necessary medication and supplies for people that cant get to hospitals, also to relieve stress on local hospitals. Along the bike path its bright now but at night there wont be any lights. One of the reasons there will be police and National Guard here getting people home safely. Deanna durante, nbc 10 news. Heres something of a surprise, perhaps. With two weeks to go, there are still thousands of hotel rooms available here in philadelphia. Mayor nutter says the hotels didnt know what to expect. The mayor says some hotels are dropping prices and offering incentives, so activity has started to pick up. 3,000 rooms are still available. They walked in remembrance of the hundreds of civilians and First Responders who lost their lives. Philadelphia police, fire and drum corps provided the sound track for this mornings firefighters Memorial Walk in old city. Mayor michael nutter, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and fire commissioner derek sawyer were in attendance. The procession concluded with a moment of silence. In camden county, dozens of pennsauken residents and First Responders placed nearly 3,000 flags at the townships 9 11 memorial. One flag for each person who died in the attacks. Last nights rain didnt stop the community from coming together. Mother nature wasnt necessarily cooperative this year but you know, the Community Still came out and weep have the flags out and the tradition has continued. Thats a good thing. Pennsauken residents have been placing the flags every year since 2003. We will show you how many other local communities marked the solemn anniversary at 5 00 and 6 00. Washington, d. C. Police confirm that a lunchtime shooting at Union Station is not connected to terrorism or the anniversary of 9 11. D. C. Police say a Security Guard saw a man stab a woman inside the nearby building. The guard chased that suspect to the train station and eventually shot the man after he lunged at the guard with a knife. The man and woman initially stabbed are both expected to recover. Union station was briefly evacuated but has now reopened. Flags outside the station are flying at half staff to mark the 9 11 anniversary. New information this afternoon in the investigation into that series of freeway shootings in phoenix. Authorities say two persons of interest have been detained and are being questioned. As of this morning, there have been 11 confirmed shootings in the past 12 days, all happening along an eightmile stretch of interstate 10 in phoenix. Republican president ial hopeful donald trump is now the sole owner of the Miss Universe pageant. Trump purchased nbcs half of the Miss Universe organization and now owns 100 of it. Trump announced the move on twitter. He also settled all lawsuits with Nbc Universal which severed ties with trump earlier this year. Tonight, donald trump will appear on the tonight show with jimmy fallon. Trumps appearance comes as a new poll out of iowa shows hes the top candidate in the state for the gop. According to the Quinnipiac University poll, trump has the support of 27 of the iowa gop caucus participants. Rounding out the top four candidates, ben carson, ted cruz and jeb bush. Wisconsin Governor Scott walker fell from the top spot back in july to number ten. He is third behind Bernie Sanders and hillary clinton, whose support dropped ten points over the last month to 37 . The trial for the jersey jam bridge scandal has been pushed back to next year. A new jersey federal judge filed an order yesterday which will push back the trial for two former Chris Christie allies until march 7th. Former Christie Deputy chief of staff Bridget Kelly and Port Authority executive bill baronei are facing charges. The delayed trial date will give the attorneys more time to prepare. They are accused of a scheme to close lanes at the George Washington bridge as payback against the mayor of fort lee for not supporting christies reelection bid. Both have pleaded not guilty. Former Port Authority official David Wildstein is expected to testify during the trial. He has already pleaded guilty. Governor christie has not been directly implicated in the case, nor has he been charged. Millions more americans may need high Blood Pressure medication. Hes telling us the description of this vehicle is a Pontiac Grand Prix with a green trunk, an older model, and thats what green hood or trunk, he is telling me, early model pontiac grand prex. Thats the suspect vehicle. This chester officer was on duty. He was taken here to Chester Crozer medical center. He was tossed from his motorcycle. Let me show you a live look at the scene. This is happening right across from the harrahs casino in chester, 291 is shut down, much of that area is shut down because of this accident. We can show you video from skyforce 10. The good news from the Police Commissioner, they are telling us this officer is alert, he is expected to survive despite being thrown from this motorcycle. Right now, police are searching for that early model, maybe year 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, red or burgundy color. Those officers are now out looking for this vehicle. Rutgers University Officials met behind closed doors today in the weake of a series of arrest of students athletes. Todays private board of governors meeting was to discuss, quote, athletic matters and anticipated or pending litigation. In all, eight students including six Football Players have been arrested in connection with a series of home invasions and assaults. All the students have been suspended pending the investigation. We are now hearing from the new york prison guard who helped two inmates escape. She gave an exclusive interview to the today shows matt lauer telling him she was sucked into the plot. Mitchell admitted to helping richard matt and david sweat escape prison by providing them with the tools they needed to do so. In an emotional jailhouse interview, mitchell revealed to lauer how the inmates got so close to her and what she brought into the prison to help them. She says she was in over her head, felt completely controlled by richard matt and was in a depression. Mitchell also addressed rumors of inmate relationships with matt and sweat, saying she knows its hard to believe but she does love her husband. After the escape, matt was shot and killed back in june. Sweat was shot and captured and is back in prison. We had more clouds in new jersey so thats why the temperatures are lower. The rainfall amounts are pretty incredible. Across the river, sewell, new jersey, six inches of rain. Philadelphia international, 4. 77. Thats the eighth wettest day in recorded history of philadelphia. Wilmington, about four inches. Allentown, three and a half inches. That storm is offshore, pretty impressive one for this time of year. And the clouds with it, well, they are leaving as well. Here comes the next area. So this break in between is not lasting very long. You can see its a fairly solid area of rain, a couple of thunderstorms in there, nothing like what we saw yesterday, though. As we go ahead in time, the temperature is down into the 60s and even the 50s in some parts of the area by tomorrow morning. Thats nice and comfortable. And we start off dry. If theres any sunshine tomorrow its generally in the morning. As the moisture increases, look what happens. By even early afternoon, maybe even midday hour we could see showers and storms develop as moisture comes up from the south. Its not just the system coming in from the west. But when lots of parents see their kids go on the field they get nervous about concussions. The university of delaware are part of a landmark study to better understand concussions. If you are one of the 600 student athletes at the university of delaware you are now doing weird tests involving your balance and your brain. Delaware one of just 23 schools in the nation now involved in a multiyear ncaa and department of defense sponsored concussion study. We have all seen plenty of bad hits. Researchers want to see how those players brains work down the road. These tests give them a baseline they can use for comparison if the player gets a concussion. We are going to be able to see the natural progression of a concussion. We can monitor them as they progress and get better. Right now at 5 00, new information just in to nbc 10 about the officer who was thrown from his motorcycle during a hit and run in Delaware County. Nbc 10s Randy Gyllenhaal has been following the latest developments. He joins us live from Crozer Chester hospital. What have you learned . Reporter i just got off the phone with the commissioner here in chester. He tells me this. The officer is going to survive. He was on duty at the time, on his police motorcycle, when it appears that he was blindsided, hit and then thrown some 30, maybe 40 feet off his motorcycle. The suspect vehicle took off but this officer was taken here to Chester Crozer medical center. He is here right now being checked on. Again, good news is hes going to survive. Let me show you the scene. This is along 291 in chester, actually just across from the harrahs casino down there. That whole road has been closed off because of this investigation. Heavy traffic delays. Police are saying it appears this officer was struck headon by an early model, maybe year 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, possibly with a green trunk or green hood. The car is likely red or burgundy. This officer is a 12 year veteran of the police force. As detectives continue to search for that hit and run driver, we are told that this officer is expected to be okay. Ironical
