Tornados and storm damage have been reported in illinois and other parts of the midwest. Tonight the First Alert Weather Team is tracking the chance for more damage to reach our area. Chief meteorologist Glen Schwartz standing by with details in the first alert. Glen, what do we need to look out for . Jacquelin, i am expecting some damage. At least in parts of our area tomorrow afternoon. This area is on top of us right now, and it has nothing to do with the system that has been clobbering chicago and other parts of illinois and missouri. This is another area separate from that that may come in during the Morning Hours briefly. This is the line of thunderstorms. 3 00. Its still working west of allentown. At 4 30, look at this line of storms coming right through philadelphia area down through northern delaware. If the radar looks like this tomorrow afternoon, there will likely be warnings issued, there will be strong to severe thunderstorms, wind gusts. Over 60 miles an hour in some areas, and, yet, damage expected. Then it continues to move toward the shore. More on the timing for your neighborhood coming up in just a few minutes. I am asking everyone watching tonight to seize this moment and believe in yourselves, believe in your future and believe once more in america. Tonight a hopeful President Trump addressed congress, america, and the world. Good evening from the nations capitol. Im jim rosenfield. Tonights speech had a very different tone from the inauguration, but right out of the gate the president heeded calls to address recent acts of hate across the country. The speech began with a condemnation of the attacks on jewish cemeteries and the threats against Jewish Community centers. The president saying he is working on historic tax reform that will help companies and the middle class. He called for affordable child care, a paid family leave, and an Education Bill that funds school choice, but the biggest response of the night came during his comments on health care and immigration reform, two topics that showed the Division Within congress and the country as the president called for unity. Mr. Speaker, the president of the united states. A speech of unity, an aboutface from the darker tones of President Trumps inaugural address. While we may be a nation divided in policy, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all of its very ugly forms. And the biggest applause of the night . We are blessed to be joined tonight by corrine owens. The president pausing to recognize the widow of u. S. Navy special ops william ryan owens. Ryan died as a warrior and a hero. Democratic women lawmakers wearing white in support of womens rights, as the president attempted to reach across the aisle. Our citizens deserve and so much more, so why not join forces and finally get the job done and get it done right . President prufrp promised to repeal and replace obama care, leading to division in the room. We athe way to make Health Insurance available to everyone is lower the cost of health care, and that is what were going to do. Mr. Trump once again vowed to build a border wall and introduce an help the unemployed, save billions and billions of dollars and make our communities safer for everyone. The president revealed a trillion dollar investment, guided by two principles. Buy american and hire american. What we are witnessing today is the renewal of the american spirit. Our allies will find that america is once again ready to lead. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle weighing in tonight. Republicans and democrats have very different ideas of what they heard here tonight. Now, weve spent the past two days here in washington d. C. , and we really heard two things that lawmakers wanted to hear from the president. One being a call for unity, and words of unity from the president. The other being details on some specific plans. For democrats one of those things was infrastructure. Now, the president did talk about that tonight, talking about a program of national rebuilding, but for some democrats, i talked to this evening it was not enough. Here are what democrats and republicans had to say tonight. Thats the same thing we heard when he was campaigning. Absolutely no plan other than he wants to build it, and weve heard nothing for the month he has been in there. Its about jobs and education that im focused on. You want more details on that. Thats not enough . Just saying i want a trillion dollar investments means nothing. One thing they really wanted to hear was unifying. They want to hear him say things that would unify both sides of the aisle. Did you hear that . I thought hear some of that on jobs and Infrastructure Spending which democrats applauded. Putting america first. I was surprised a lot of democrats didnt stand up for. It wasnt a tip cal state of the union or address to congress. It was more a traditional Trump Campaign speech where it was very long on promises and talking about goals that many of us can get behind, like more jobs for everybody. However, i didnt hear any of the specific plans or proposals. Members of congress. I asked him whether he did applaud for the president tonight. He said, yes, there were times when he did. If you watch that chamber, though, it was split. There were times you saw republicans on their feet. You saw democrats, a lot of those women in white as well, sitting, not doing anything. The president getting some credit. Especially from republicans. You heard the pennsylvania chair of the Republican Party speaking there and giving him credit for the words of unity used tonight. For some democrats, it is not enough, and they are still watching. For now live in washington d. C. , im lauren make, nbc 10 news. All right, lauren make. Thank you. President trump asked the public to embrace a renewal of the american spirit. We wanted to know how voters received tonights speech. We continue our coverage from North Hampton. This local crowd supported with loud applause. Very positive. Very upbeat. President trump has so much love for the country. He loves his people. He just want to help everybody. The North Hampton county republicans hosted a watch party for trumps speech tonight. Debbie bureau told us she liektd the president s plans to help veterans and education. She also thought it was nice to see him get support from democrats. You have to put aside your differences and work for a common goal. I think he made a few attempts to maybe reach out and try to expand his appeal. After the president finished his hourlong speech, we checked to see how it faired with democrats. We spoke to matthew munzey of the North HamptonDemocratic Committee who said he would like to see the president follow his words with actions. I would like to see him besides the speech to reach out and perhaps have meetings with democrats and get their input. In easton, brandon, nbc 10 news. At North Hampton county, one of three pennsylvania counties to flip from democrat to republican this past election. In other news, the president has come under fire for his lack of response prior to tonight for the recent rash of antisemitic threats around the country. Different story tonight, as i said. Mr. Trump wasting no time addressing that topic. Listen. Recent threats targeting Jewish Community centers and vandalism of jewish cemeteries as well as last weeks shooting in kansas city remind us that while we may be a nation divided on policy, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all of its very ugly forms. [ applause ] President Trump not the only one speaking out against these attacks tonight. Nbc 10s denise shows us how groups across the philadelphia region are making their voices heard and stepping in to help. I felt like i had to be here. Rincht the spirit of unity shared among people of all faiths. Were a family. Were a community. Reporter about 100 people packed the corner of springdale ask kresson roads in cherry hill. People were hugging. People brought signs. People brought children. Reporter they took a stand to denounce bomb threats called into that Community Center and other jewish organizations across the country. Im shocked and amazed at what is going on in our world today . Reporter meanwhile, the community is taking matters into its own hands, organizing a cleanup at the mount carmel Jewish Cemetery where more than 100 headstones were toppled and vandaliz vandalized. Reporter people are getting involved. No matter what nationality people are, and its important to come together. Reporter strangers brought together through social media and word of mouth. There should be no divide. There should be no divide. Reporter the outrage and concern topping donation that is have raised the reward to 50,000 for information leading to an arrest in the cemetery vandalism. Denise, nbc 10 news. It will be up to prosecutors to decide if this vandalism, in fact, constitutes a hate crime. Interesting to note, in pennsylvania the hate crimes law covers ethnicity, race, and religion, but not sexual orientation, and that has members of the Lgbt Community wondering why the law doesnt protect them. The nbc 10 investigators found pennsylvania has tried and failed to make this change several times, and youll see why coming up on nbc 10 news at 11 00 still to come, but for now sending it back to jacquelin london and our studios in philly. Jacquelin. An important investigation just minutes away. Our other big story tonight, a first alert for severe storms. Len. Yeah, these storms from chicago down towards st. In the last two sessions state lawmakers have introduced bills to protect the Lgbtq Community under hate crime laws, but both times those bills died without a full vote or even a full debate. Tonight nbc 10 Investigative Reporter jordan spencer is asking why. Reporter for gia mmi lucket simple chores are a reminder that shes just like the rest of us. As a transwoman growing up in arkansas, she says her family didnt always make her feel that way. When everybody came, i had to leave. I had to leave. For luckett philadelphia is a safe haven, but shes found its also a place where state leaders have not protected lgbt people under hate crime laws. It means that prominent crimes like the 2015 attack on two gay men in center city were prosecuted without the enhanced penalties connected to hate crimes. Why are we not protecting them in the state of pennsylvania . Reporter state representative kevin boyle says the gap in state law is not for lack of trying. His brother, brendan, then also in the statehouse, introduced a first attempt to expand the protections. Last session kevin introduced similar legislation in a second attempt. We are very successful in getting bipartisan support. My joint sponsor on the bill is a suburban republican. But that bill was never even brought up before the judiciary committee, let alone debated by the full house. Do you see this as an additional stalling . Yes, i do. Absolutely. So we went to harrisburg to track down the chair of that committee, representative ron marsico. Why was it not brought up . I was not asked to bring it up where. You were expecting a special ask by the sponsor . Usually i get asked by the prime sponsor and cosponsors. As it turns out, the Pennsylvania House will get a third chance to consider the change. Boyle just introduced yet another attempt house bill 505. This time adding protection for both the lgbt and disabled community. Marsico promised us it will get a committee hearing. I will bring up the bill. You are bring up this new bill . Yeah. I said that before. Ill bring up the bill. For luckett that debate and the change in the law feels urgent. Watch what happens again if we repeal the Affordable Care act for 20 million poor people who, in fact, will be without cancer and be without the diagnostic access that they have now.
