We begin with that breaking news in the lehigh valley. A block in allentown forced to evacuate when several row homes caught fire tonight. Nbc10s keith jones is joining us live on the scene together. Whats the latest there, keith . Reporter jim, i just talked to a homeowner. All he could do was look me in the face and shake his head and walk away. I want to show you whats going on behind me. Stepping out of the way, look at all the fire trucks here. Dozens of firefighters just beyond the smoke and the haze and the police tape. And if you pan over to the right, what you can start to see is where the active flames are currently and how firefighters now are stoking them at the top of the fielding. Firefighters are hitting the flames from at least six different locations. At least a dozen fire trucks here. At least six row homes are involved. This is north fulton as six families, 12 people according to the red cross. They warn those numbers could be preliminary, and theyre low. We got here hours ago. This fire started around 8 00 in the middle of the block. A family called 911, got their kids out of the house. Firefighters tell me it started in the back of their home and then quickly spread. Now the block is evacuated. Firefighters are all over liberty and fulton, even behind the homes fighting this threealarm fire. I talked to fire captain John Christopher about the challenge now of suppressing the fire. A male adult and two children, they noticed the fire and were able to get out immediately and call 911. These are attached row homes. It has spread. We do have extension. So far, there are about six homes involved. Reporter it appears now firefighters are just starting to control this fire. What youre looking at is firefighters poking to open up the house to expose those flames to the three hoses. I want to reiterate here no one has been hurt. But, again, at least 12 families 12 people, i should say, and six families lost everything. Imagine its just weeks before christmas. Were going to stay out here as firefighters continue to battle this blaze. Live in allentown, keith jones, nbc10 news. Were following more breaking news right now, this time in philadelphia. One person is dead in this fire in cobbs creek. Witnesses say they heard a big boom before this fire started. Nbc10s drew smith live on the scene tonight. Drew, what do we know so far . Reporter jim, still a lot of cleanup to do and investigating. If you take a look at the building right now, you can still see fire crews up on the second floor. The fire is out, but several of the surrounding buildings have been damaged here, and it was in that second floor apartment where someone lost their life tonight. Flames shot out of the second floor of a row home at the corner of callowhill and 64th streets. A big giant boom happened. It kind of shook the neighborhood. Reporter firefighters arrived in just three minutes, but it would take much longer to put this out. They began blasting water on the flames, an aggressive search and rescue effort followed. But it ended tragically. Pretty tough fire fight. 40 minutes and unfortunately, you know, an outcome that we would not have wished, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Reporter firefighters found com pressed gas cylinders inside. It sounded like some kind of tanks. The guy who lived there, he had breathing problems. Reporter some families evacuated their homes, later returning once the flames died down, shocked to hear their neighbor was done. Once i came outside, it was exploded. It was dangerous. It was really unsafe. Reporter were told eight people will have to find another place to sleep right now. Theyve been displaced by this fire. The fire marshal is also investigating, trying to figure out what exactly caused this to begin. Live in the cobbs creek section of philadelphia, im drew smith, nbc10 news. Tonight were getting a look at the person of interest in the case of an explosion at a center city home. Look at this photo right here. The person believed to be a man is captured on surveillance cameras on both pine and lombard streets the morning of november 20th. Someone dropped off a package with an explosive at jim aldens home last week and when alden opened it, it exploded. He survived, but look at this. He suffered shrapnel injuries to his face and his torso and his hands. So far, no motive has been revealed. A Surprise Development tonight in the transition to president elect donald trump during his first rally since being elected. He announced his picture for secretary of defense. It came as he teased the crowd not to tell anyone. We are going to appoint mad dog mattis as our secretary of defense. Mr. Trump said the official announcement wont come until monday. Mat sis a retired marine corps general and has served in iraq and led the u. S. Central command. But because mattis has only been out of the military for three years, he needs a congressional waiver to override a law that requires a sevenyear wait. Democratic senator kristen jill brand said she would vote against it. Todays speech was part of the president elects first stop on his thank you tour in cincinnati, ohio. Theres no way that donald trump can break the blue wall. We didnt break it. We shattered that sucker. Mr. Trump called his Election Night victory a landslide and spoke about his win in pennsylvania. He promised to grow the economy, shrink taxes, and rebuild an energyindependent america. Earlier in the day, the president elect went to indiana to celebrate a deal he says keeps hundreds of jobs in the united states. He toured the carrier plant along with Vice President elect and indiana governor mike pence. Indiana is offering the airconditioning giant 7 million in incentives to keep about 1,000 jobs in this country, another 1,300 jobs are still slated to go to mexico with the closure of another indiana carrier plant. In a matter of hours, philadelphia officials will begin recounting the election results. A recount is set for friday at about 75 precincts in the city. The green party is still pushing for a statewide recount in pennsylvania. A hearing on that is set for monday. Today lawyers for president elect trump filed an objection to a recount in another battleground state, michigan. Former Green Party Candidate jill stein, who has spearheaded the recount effort in three states, called mr. Trumps objection, quote, shameful and outrageous, end quote. A vote recount in wisconsin got started today as well. Workers have until december 12th to finish counting there. And tonight a discussion at Drexel University focused on the impact the election might have on public health. A panel of faculty and students came together for the discussion hosted by drexels Dornsife School of public health. They talked about the changes that could come to the Affordable Care act. Current Health Policies along with the environment. But organizers say there was one main message. Two ensure that the Publics Health is preserved, that marginalized groups arent lost in whats happening and to think about ways to raise up the voices p people who might not otherwise have a voice. Students at the event also expressed concern about how the Lgbtq Community and immigrants will be treated in a trump administration. From the nbc10 delaware bureau, tonight, the Wilmington Fire Department is in mourning for one of its own. The fire commissioner announced the death of senior firefighter ardy hope. Shes now one of three firefighters who died battling a row home fire in september. Hope had been in intensive care and was listed in critical but stable condition this earlier week. Christopher leach and jerry fickes were the other two firefighters killed in that blaze. And 27yearold ruiz was arrested and charged with murder. She lived in the home with her father and stepmother and admitted setting the fire. In the lehigh valley, a middle School Student is in trouble with the law tonight after School Officials found a loaded gun in her locker. The girl goes to South Mountain middle school. Reports are other students found out about the gun and notified School Officials. The girl is charged with possession of a weapon on school property. A bold move to try to save lives at school. Officials in one jersey shore county now have a new tool to prevent deaths from overdoses. Today nurses, athletic directors, and others at every Ocean County School were armed with narcan nasal spraz kits. They were trained how to use the spray, which can reverse overdoses from heroin and other opioids. Its a first in the garden state. Many School Nurses say its something they never imagined they would ever need. Frightening. Ive been a school nurse for many years now, and ive never seen anything like this. The spray was provided for free by a pharmaceutical company. Officials say there has been one overdose in Ocean County Schools and at least one other in camden county. Up next, off the hook. Theyre going to vote on two bills next week which they say cracks down on illegal predatory towing. But some of the citys biggest Tow Companies think it unfairly targets them and will hurt business. Nbc10s Brandon Hudson has the story. Reporter on front street in phillys kensington neighborhood, bar owner Tony Santiago said hes had some problems with one of the citys private towing companies. Santiago told us a company would illegally place towing signs on his property without his permission. This company came in and all of a sudden they started towing cars out of here. Reporter its examples like that one which got the attention of City Council WomanMaria Quinones sanchez. She created a bill requiring police to ticket a car before its towed from a private lot or driveway. They can ensure that they are not stealing your car from a spot that is not regulated and permitted to allow towing operations. Reporter her bill is a reinforcement of sorts of law mayor jim kenney sponsored when he was a councilman in 2010. When that bill came into effect, 2010, and 11, and 12, it devastated me. It ate up all my savings. Reporter towing Company Owner lou blum is trying to fight sanchezs bill and the one created by councilman william greenly, which would penalize towers who dont adhere to the citys established law after a car accident. If the police are called or respond in any way to an accident, only one company, the company thats on the rotational list, can deal with the vehicle. Reporter green lee says several rogue towers forced this action. But blum thinks its unfairly targeting companies that follow the rules. The longtime owner told me he would like to unionize all private towers. I want to make them a union. Then they will have someone to listen to. They will have rules and regulations. They will have a code of ethics. Reporter a vote to make both bills into laws will happen next thursday. In center city, im Brandon Hudson, nbc10 news. Strutting the runway and giving back. Lehigh valley obviously going to be one of the coldest spots tomorrow morning. Already in the 30s now. Here are the high temperatures, though as we go into the next few days. Today we hit a around 63, but that was very early in the morning. And tomorrow, 51. Saturday, 49. Sunday, 47. Normal high is 50, but temperatures will be trending down. Even as we go into next week, its going to stay on the colder side. Live look at the satellite and radar. Were dry. Youll see more sunshine tomorrow, but as we go into next week, were going to see a pattern change. This starts this sunday. Thats when the map starts. The colder air will be here. But watch what happens as we go into next week. That arctic air mass drops down from canada, and it moves right over us as we go into next friday.
