Heres the deal that emerged. Instead of a 3 cent soda tax the tax rate would be 1. 5 per ounce and would include diet sodas as well, another change from the original proposal. Traditionally the bills come out of committee with a significant vote, more often than not it will pass. Reporter the proposed tax rate dropped from 3 cents per ounce to 1. 5 cents per ounce but covers more drinks. Artificially sweetened beverages are included. In other words, diet soda. Earlier today emotions bubbled over. Inside no new taxes. Reporter and outside. The city says the tax would raise about 91 million over the next year funding quality prek investment, schools, reinvestment in parks and education but tonight it was also revealed it would pad the citys general fund. This was a bait and switch and is being used to plug a budget hole. What retailers tell us, theyre going to be forced to pass this tax on to consumers. Reporter that fear was echoed by a union that represents soda industry workers. When the price of soda goes up, sales go down. And when sales go down, we lose jobs. Council will cast a final vote on this broader soda tax decided on tonight next thursday, thursday of next week and thats when the opposition will decide whether its worth taking the city to court. In philadelphias east looak la neighborhood huge trees fell across the road taking out power lines. No one was injured. A tree smashed into an suv parked on the street. In delaware power lines and trees all over the road here in north wilmington. We found this mess along silverside road west of the i95 underpass. At the jersey shore the winds were so strong they ripped the roof off this apartment building. Look closely, see the roof torn off at the top. Tonight we have Live Team Coverage of the storm. We begin with nbc 10s Brandon Hudson live tonight in cherry hill. Brandon, damage there as well . Reporter jim, yes, there is. Roughly 13,000 customers in burlington and camden counties dont have power including this home here in cherry hill, but this is probably their biggest problem. A large tree right in the middle of their front yard. You can see just how massive this thing is. Ill tell you, this is just one of a few places where we saw unbelievable damage. Homeowners in disbelief at this site on willow del drive in cherry hill. Part of the pavement uprooted as a tree toppled on their home leaving neighbors in awe. Its scary the way that pavement came up. Reporter ed and arlene live next door. Arlene says her neighbors werent home hhj when the storm rolled through but called them when she saw the tree. The district official saying the incident happened outside hamilton elementary after school hours. The boy is taken to the hospital. Hes expected to be okay. No word if hes a student at that school. New at 11 00, philadelphia is investing in protest insurance ahead of the Democratic National convention. This is video from the Republican National convention in 2004. Back then, new york did not have this type of insurance. It ended up paying more than 18 million to settle lawsuits over protesters civil rights.
