Police arrested Scott Griffin earlier today accused of shooting mccullough in the leg last night. Nbc 10 was there moments after griffin was taken into custody and the 23yearold has a long rap sheet having been arrested 14 times before today. Nbc 10s Denise Nakano live at Police Headquarters with new information on griffins most recent runin with police. Reporter jacqueline, hed been sitting in jail for a month just released six days ago for lack of evidence in a preliminary hearing. Hes back here in custody at headquarters in homicide while the officer hes accused of shooting is back at home with his family. Officer James Mccullough got a Police Escort from penn Presbyterian Hospital tonight 24 hours after a gunman shot him in the line of duty. Nbc 10 on the ground and skyforce 10 in the air during a twoyear veteran officers ride back home to a waiting family. This as we uncover new details of accused shooter Scott Griffin and the days leading up to sundays crime. Court records show griffins 14 prior arrests involving theft, drugs and weapons. And just five days before officer mcculloughs shooting a judge dropped charges against griffin for theft and weapons violations during an april 12th preliminary hearing. The judge cited l. O. E. , lack of evidence in the case, stemming from a march 17th arrest. The d. A. s office tells nbc 10 two witnesses failed to show up for the hearing. The d. A. s office refiled charges the next day but by then, griffin was back on the street. And by weeks end, police say griffin along with alleged accomplice samir coyett robbed a man at gunpoint, tried to carjack a woman and shot officer mccullough. Come up on that individual and dont want to go back into the system so theyll do anything to get away. Reporter narcotics officers took griffin into custody today. I seen all the cars and had one guy. Reporter sources say he was armed with the same silver and black handgun believed to be used in the shoot of officer mccullough. Too many guns out here. Reporter sources tell me that griffin is speaking with detectives. He is likely going to be charged tomorrow with robbery and attempted murder of a police officer. Reporter days after Maurice Phillips turned himself in to Philadelphia Police, his family is still reeling after this tragedy. Today, we saw the Community Unite and rally around the family of a little girl who police say was accidentally shot and killed. For a few moments, it was as if time stood still at this vigil on East Mayfield street. Friends, neighbors, and strangers embraced each other to support Tahirah Phillips mom during the painful loss of her 4yearold daughter. Tahirahs mom and grandmother were too heartbroken to speak but her grandfather shared his thoughts. My world. I mean, this is crazy. Shes a 4yearold girl. Never went to school. Reporter on saturday, little tahirah was shot and killed inside her kensington home. Philadelphia police say Maurice Phillips was playing with a gun when it fired. A bullet hit and killed his 4yearold daughter. Police say phillips tried to make it appear as if his other daughter was responsible before he eventually turned himself in. We love you, tahirah. Reporter today we returned to where the shooting happened. The same place were told tahirahs mom hasnt been able to stay since her daughter died. Its a shock, for real. Kids are getting shot. Were getting too old for this. We got to stop killing each other. Reporter dozens of people gathered in the street and listened from their window. That could have been withdyo that could have been your kids. Reporter Community Activists who organized this moment of reflection and message to put your guns away. That shows you for other parents, you know, to have guns in the house, thats the perfect example of how not to behave with a gun around children. Federal crash investigators say a backhoe operator had a right to be on the tracks the day he was hit and killed by a train. In a new report, the ntsb says the track the backhoe was operating on was shut down for maintenance periodically over a fourday period. Its unclear if the track in chester was closed to trains at the exact time of the april 3rd crash. Tonight, police are investigating a crash that killed a crossing guard in mercer county. Skyforce 10 was over the scene in trenton this afternoon. Police say the crossing guard was crossing route 129 when he was hit and killed by a chevy avalanche truck. But if we go toward some of the western suburbs, look how cool it is. Its 53 degrees in unionville right now. 59 in avondale. 55 at lincoln university. 54 in oxford. We can show you that kind of detail for every county in the area. Now, were going from the summer warmth today back to spring. Its not too extreme, but were dropping. It was 82 today. Even 83 in allentown. 74 tomorrow. 66 degrees on wednesday. We are dropping that much and its still just going back toward average. But our pollen levels are way above average. And theyre going to stay that way. Super high tuesday and wednesday. Tomorrow, were going to get more wind. This is going to blow the pollen around a lot more. So tomorrow is going to be a difficult day for allergy sufferers. Were going to see high, thin clouds. All that moisture down by houston has moved offshore but its not getting any closer to us. So for her to have her last chemotherapy treatment today is amazing. Camerons family says shes doing okay and expect her to get stronger every single day. Shes a rock star. Look at her. But you can imagine in the beginning its so hard for families and the end of the road seems so far away.
