He told detectives that he committed this act in the name of islam. Officer Jesse Hartnett pulls up to a stop sign and within seconds a man in a white robe ambushes his car. 13 shots are fired. The officer is hit three times but survives. Boom, boom, boom and the cop was, you know, trying his best to block from getting hit. Reporter despite losing blood, a broken arm and nerve damage shots fired just off spruce. Im shot. Im bleeding heavi heavily reporter he hits the suspect once in the behind. The bravery he demonstrated was absolutely remarkable. His will to live undoubtedly saved his life. Reporter this morning, they learned of a possible motive for the attack. He stated that he pledges his allegiance to Islamic State and follo follows allah. Theres no known connection to groups like isis. Mistake its unclear if archer was actually radicalized but it does appear that he was specifically targeting cops. According to him, he believes that the Police Defend laws contrary to the teachings of koran. Reporter now, we are also learning that the gun used in this attack was previously stolen from the home of another philadelphia officer about two years ago. That officer was displciplined after the burglary. Its unclear how archer got his hands on the stolen weapon. Live in police headquarters, nbc 10 news. Officer hartnett was on the philly Police Department for the last five years. His father told us the words he shared with his son after surgery this morning. I love him, im very proud of him and hes a tough guy. Hes going to be in good shape. Everybody is praying for him. Well, this has been a tough day for the hartnett family. Professionally, hes receiving a lot of praise for his actions last night. Tonight, federal investigators are looking into the suspects travels to the middle east. Edward archer flew to egypt and saudi arabia in the past and relatives say he made a trip to mecca. His lawyer points a picture of a paranoid man. Drew smith is live where his family lives. Reporter its starting to get back to normal here on south maple avenue after federal investigators spent the day here searching for evidence. This is the home where some of archers family members live. Inside, they are reacting to this as well, just trying to figure out what happened. The Fbi Evidence Response Team searched homes linked to Edward Archer, this one in philadelphia and in Delaware County teams roped off the streets at his mothers home. They took photos and carried out boxes. I was completely blown away that when i heard that the assailant lived in yeadon. Reporter police in this small borough know archer well and so do neighbors. While he may have gotten into trouble in the past, he seemed like a regular guy. Sometimes he would play with the kids. Reporter the 30yearold had prior convictions on simple assault and weapons charges. One of his former attorneys spoke with us. He was very impulsive. He was very paranoid. Reporter doug first met archer at the new york city prison and was arrested on a warrant on assault of a gun. He returned from ten months in egypt. So far, theres nothing to suggest that trip or his 12011 trips so saudi arabia were related to radical islam or muslim or anything like that. Wei investigators are done with their search here so the family is back inside the home. We went up to the door and they did not want to appear on camera but said that they are puzzled by all of this right now. Drew smith, nbc 10 news. In the meantime, local Muslim Community leaders say no part of muslim asks for violence. We do not believe that it has to be responsible for to apologize for every event committed by some psychopathic extremist. And they say it in no way represents the teachings of islam and after a week when gun laws dominated the national conversation, this shooting shows the need for stronger gun control. Hes calling on the federal government to find a way to keep weapons away from criminals and the mentally ill. There are too many guns on our streets. Our National Government needs to do something about that because our officers are in harms way every single day. Tonight, new York City Police officers are being urged to be extra vigilant after attacks here in philadelphia and abroad here as well on thursday a suspect with a knife lunged at officers in paris. The nypd sent an internal message to officers warning them to take proactive Safety Measures in light of these two incidents. The Philadelphia Police commissioner says there is no piece of equipment that could have saved the officer from this kind of attack. The Commission Said it must have been the grace of god. This incident reinforces that an incident can happen at any time and you must be prepared. While they are not fearful, they are more cautious. Philadelphia Police Officers shook hands with muslim leaders, a sign of solidarity just blocks from where Jesse Hartnett was ambushed. Everything that happens affects everybody. So we need to stand together. Reporter from a hatchet attack in new york city to now what Police Describe as an attempted assassination in philadelphia, in these cases, all of the suspects cited inspiration from isis. A Police Officer sitting in his car, you know, they have to be vigilant all the time. But how can you prevent someone in the dark from sneaking up on your car and shooting close or from a distance. Reporter when putting on the uniform, officers know that they will be in harms way. Personally, i dont usually get scared and it seems like when you see things on the news like that, its usually far away. This is pretty close to home. Reporter a sobering reminder that they are a target. Does it make you scared to go to work . More cautious but, you know, were here to serve the community. Reporter weve learned that for now at least officers in the 18th district will be going out in pairs. They are also services being made available to them to help them deal with the added stress. The officer speaks directly to his injured colleague. As the light turned green, you proceeded through the intersection. What you didnt see was a man approaching your driver side window with a fully loaded handgun by his side. He began firing into your vehicle. T. Officer goes on to say, i was only two minutes away but it felt like it took me almost an hour. We almost crashed three separate times trying to get to you. And then the officer writes, it simply wasnt your time. God was watching over you. You did great last night. You made the 18th district and the entire department proud of you. You are a hero. Edward archer filed at least 11 shots at Jesse Hartnett and then pledged his allegiance to isis. This entire attack unfolded in a matter of seconds. Keith jones takes a closer look. Its amazing how fast this happened and how quickly officer Jesse Hartnett responded. 15 seconds from the start to the end. At this time, more than a dozen shots were fired and the officer was shot three times. Lets breakdown this video and go a little slower. Heres the suspect approaching the Police Cruiser, pointing that stolen weapon at hartnett he barely has time to react. He pointed the gun into the window shooting the officer at pointblank range. Next, remember, now, just four seconds have passed. You can see the suspect turn and and run away. He is looking back at the Police Cruiser with the officer still inside. Lets remember that officer because look at what he does. He gets out favoring that left arm thats been just hit three times and hes calling for backup and despite his injuries he courageously runs after the suspect. Here he is running down the sidewalk and Edward Archer was soon arrested. It happened out of nowhere, an ordinary night for the officer and then 15 seconds of violence. They were all killed in a house fire likely caused by a space heater. She made it out of the home early this morning but went back inside to rescue her 2yearold son nathaniel. Fire officials tell us they were just steps away from making it out alive. Not a pretty sight. Investigators say up to five space heaters were being improperly used inside the home. The man convicted in the Center City Building collapse learned their fate today. A contractor was sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison. He was motivated by greed and cut corners when he sold the building supports for parts before taking it down.
