Helicopters and boats looking for a pilot who crashed off the jersey shore. We dont know what caused the crash, but we do know the pilot was flying in bad weather. His plane went down this afternoon about seven miles off the coast of Atlantic City. Nbc 10s drew smith spoke with rescue crews and an aviation expert who explains why the conditions were so dangerous. The coast guard was age to respond to this crash scene fairly quickly off the coast where they found a contained area of debris. But they also encountered bad weather, which an expert tells us tonight could have÷ e somet to do with this crash. This coast guard chopper refuelled and headed back out. It was the second search pattern for this crew flying in less than ideal weather and visibility. It had some lightning in it, which for our aircraft is a problem. About seven miles off the coast. Reporter the mooney m20 single engine aircraft was approaching the end of a threehour flight from day lord, michigan, to Atlantic City. 800 feet. Now hes going into the ocean. Its capable of strong but qke this, causes significant turbulence. Reporter we spoke with a philadelphiabased aviation expert on facetime. That would be uncomfortable. A rough ride. Reporter he looked at our weather alert radar at the time the plane crashed and that the heavy rain might be why it ended up on the opposite side of the Atlantic City airport. It would be my judgment that that decision was made by him to avoid the intense weather. Unfortunately, the area where radar contact was lost is rather intense in terms of the rainfall as well. Reporter we looked at the flight track, and the plane was registered to a 68yearold from michigan. In Atlantic City, drew smith, nbc 10 news. It took about an hour to get it under control. No reports of any injuries. The question is, whether it will impact the morning commute. Lets go to our meteorologist. Wet roads tomorrow . Well, we will be drying out a lot tomorrow. But tonight we have flooded roadways to talk about. Just south of philadelphia, we have very heavy rain. A small area of rain, very heavy and very slow moving. Gloucester county, numerous roads closed. 295 southbound flooded near logan township. We are still seeing flooded roads. And here you see some of the rainfall totals in only the past three hours. Radar is indicating over four inches near paulsboro. We are see a Flood Warning out right now for gloucester and camden counties. Two inches of rain per hour here. So the Flood Warnings are going to go for the next few hours. This is really the only rain we have in the area. The rest of the area has dried out. Some of the highest totals, close to 4 1 2 inches already in paulsboro because of the heavy rain in place. Tomorrow morning, big changes for the morning commute. It will be drier. The man at the center of a high profile philadelphia kidnapping case says money made him do it. Delvin barnes pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges today. He told a federal judge he needed money and grabbed carlesha freelandgaither in a robbery gone wrong. He grabbed her off a germantown street and forced her into his car. Barnes said in court today he needed money to return to his home state of virginia. He claimed he wanted to see his daughter before facing charging there for a separate crime. Todays plea deal will put barnes in prison for 35 years with no chance of parole. Tomorrow marks 14 years since the september 11 attacks. Today a new Visitor Center complex opened at the flight 93 National Memorial near shanksville. The 26 million facility includes an overview of the crash site, new exhibits, and a learning center. Flight 93 was the only airliner hijacked by terrorists that did not reach its target on september 11, 2001. And that was thanks to the efforts of the 40 passengers and crew members on board who died.
