Painkillers. Federal researchers say the number of people addicted in our area is well above the National Average. According to the u. S. Drug enforcement administration, more than 650 people died from drug overdoses in philadelphia in 2014. About 440 from heroin and painkillers alone. In camden county, the death rate is eight times the National Average from overdoses. In 2014 close to 800 people overdosed in the state. In the past six years close to 2 00,000 people were hospitalized for opioid abuse f. Forred a ilkts it il for addicts its a struggle to stay clean. We have a guest here specializing in implantable treatments for a variety of issues. Tell us about how brayburn is trying a new approach to treating drug addiction. For almost any chronic disease, and addiction, as we know, is a chronic brain disease that needs long term treatment, an implantable you can have inserted and then not have to worry about remembering would be incredibly helpful. I would love to have a liptor implant because i cant remember to take it three days in a row. But for a disease like opioid addiction that is so unforgiving. One mistake will kill you. To have that protection for six months have you have a sustained level of medicine thats proven to work to save lives, you have this on board for six months at the time, i think has the chance to improve lives and save lives. Why do you believe in implantable devices are more effective than a methadone clinics . I they theyve also saved hundreds of thousands of lives. I wouldnt want one of my loved ones to go. Patients who go there call it liquid jail. You have to stand in line and drink your methadone at the window. What patients have said is that with the implant they have freedom and peace of mind. They dont have this behavior of always chasing their medicine, having to worry about going to get it at the pharmacy, having to worry about their children getting ahold of it and accidentally being exposed to it and being poisoned by it. Either they dont have to worry about it getting lost or stolen. These things happen in the real world. This is a standard of care thats a great medicine. There are issues that can be helped when you have an implantable device. Has an implantable ever been used before to try to treat addiction . This is going to be the first if its approved by the fda. And it would be the first implantable to treat opioid addiction. Talk to us about what happens if somebody has the implantable and ends up abusing heroin or another kind of drug . So this is exactly where there is a difference and a potential advantage for having an implantable versus the daily basis. What happens occasionally is when somebody is taking on a daily basis, on a thursday they decide to stop because theyre going out on saturday, and they can go out and use. With the implant, they dont have that choice. Its much less likely that theyll want to go use because the effects will not with there for them. Any dangerous side effects to usen an implantable device . Like my other procedure, there will be minor side effects including pain and swelling, those kinds of things. And as long as the insertion is done properly which is why training of the doctors is so important, the side effects are well tolerated. Can you go into a little more detail about where its implanted and how it happens. Is it painful . Does it take very long . What is the specific procedure . Theres four tiny implants that go right here, similar to the other implants for contraception. Its done in the doctors office. They numb the area, and it takes only about 10 to 15 minutes to put it in. They bandage it, and after about a day you take it off, and you cant see it but you can probably feel them if you touch them. Thats another thing that patients have said they appreciate is the discreetness of it. And then they have peace of mind that theyre protected for six months. Is there is an issue with changing your daily dosage, this prevents you from doing that and there may be a need to take oral medicine. How would that work . If its approved, its going to be for patients who are already stabilized on a dose of 8 milligrams or less of the drug. And really unless something extraordinary happens, patients shouldnt need additional medicine. But its not uncommon in other chronic diseases where you have a long acting on board. For example, you might have a long acting insulin and take short acting on top of it if you need to. Its not that unusuanusual. If it does happen, we expect it to be like the clinical trial, in short apts mounts of time to the person over that period of time thats requiring the extra medicine. But this is for somebody who is stable with a set medication and really wouldnt need a daily adjustment . Typically we would expect it if its approved, to be for patients who are stable and doing well and dont need a lot of adjustments in the thats why we would recommend people to already be in treatment for six months and for the doctor to think theyre doing well and on a stable dose. Is this something you hope may stop the stigma of Addiction Treatment or help to open peoples eyes to other ways of treating it and making people get better and trying to fight this epidemic . I think everything we can do to fight the epidemic from talking about it to having innovative options for patients. These patients deserve the same kinds of innovations that are available to other patients and other chronic diseases. I think there is definitely a chance that the more innovation there is and the more use of medicine, the more people will talk about it and the stigma will be lessened. This is a priority of president obamas to shift the focus on Addiction Treatment from a criminal justice issue to a Public Health issue, and that he wants funding, more funding, to go into this. Do you hope that maybe some of that money will flow into Research Related to implantable devices or more funding on that front . We really agree with president obamas approach to not criminalizing this disease. And certainly hope that more money will be funneled into research and development of new options rather than people putting people in jail for a disease that really needs to be medically treated. All right. The ceo of brayburn pharmaceutica pharmaceuticals. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. Coming up next, early money is like yeast. Its a slogan that turned into a movement to get more women elected into public office. Well explain what it means and whether its working in this years election. Elmos got the moves. It makes the dough rise. That saying turned into emilys list. An organization that recruits trains and funds pro choice Democratic Women candidates. Recently as a National President of the organization, she sat down to discuss the groups goals for 2016. This race has shaped up already. Its getting exciting. I want to talk a little bit about Hillary Clinton and women. This is an issue im sure youre paying close attention to. Why is she not connecting as much as some might have expected with women, particularly with young women . Well, i think this is early in the plo serocess. We havent known where things are at. At emilys list weve seen strong polling with women across the country. As the primary season that goes out, i think youre going to see a lot of support by women. If that connection needs a little bit of an assist, what can your role be . Our organization is now 3 million strong across the country. Women and good men who are with us who agree that we need more women in office and its our members who have been just leading the way in every state in this country talking about the importance of having an incredible champion for women and families in the white house and we know that Hillary Clinton is going to be that person. Lets talk a little bit more about her and in particular, some of the ways that women have been encouraged to help her. We actually have a little bit of sound from Madeleine Albright i want to play for you and then ill talk about it . And just remember, theres a special place in hell for women who dont help each other. Now, that comment did create a bit of controversy. Not everyone feels that that is helpful. What do you think . Does that help your cause . Does that hurt you . I mean, i do feel a comment like that has been a little overblown in this whole conversation, but i think its also really important to say that no woman in this country should vote for someone because shes a woman. That doesnt make any sense. And by the way, as women, we dont vote for people because theyre women. What were looking for is voters across the country for candidates who are fighting for women and families, ensuring that our families have the economic strength and security that we need to succeed, and that is precisely why emilys list supports Hillary Clinton. She has a lifetime of record of fighting for policies that advance peoples and familys security. Thats what were looking for in candidates. Thats why we think folks should vote for hillary. On the republican side, donald trump has created a bit of controversy of his own. Hes been criticized for comments about women for some of the comments in particular, about megyn kelly from fox news, and yet he continues to do very very well. Whats your analysis of how he is perceived . Well, ill tell you, our sister organization, american women, has just put out some research looking into where women voters are really sort of caught off guard by comments like donald trump has made, and he has a problem with women voters. Women across this country do not want to vote for somebody who says those kind of just inappropriate things, all kinds of awful statements that hes made about women and, frankly, about so many people in this country. Hes got a problem, and we will see what the Republican Party ends up doing here. Its going to take him a lot to rebuild any relationship with women in this country. Lets talk a little bit about here in pennsylvania. One of the candidates and there are three of them, for senate on the democratic side, is katie mcbeginty. If she wins, shes the first woman senator from pennsylvania. I know youre supporting her. If clintHillary Clinton does no the nomination, does that hurt her . We feel confident Hillary Clinton is going to get the nomination. Pennsylvania is going to be the center of a lot of activity in this general election. Get ready. Theyre all coming toward you. In the convention, just to kick it off in the summer. Whats really important is that pennsylvania really elect someone who is going to be that champion for women and families and in katies case, someone who has been for moving forward in positive environment tal issues thats helping the country and the state. This is also a seat that democrats really, really want to pick up as we fight for the majority in the senate. Its a must win for us. Any other races youre watching in pennsylvania that you can highlight for us . Were monitoring a number of them at emily is list, but i wt to talk about your support of shanasi martin. An incredible person. A wonderful woman who is not only a small businesswoman. But shes a scientist, and someone who has done research into breast cancer. As i look at the house of representatives today with the Republican Party that doesnt quite believe in any science at the moment, it would sure be nice to get the voice of a scientist in these conversations, particularly as were dealing with climate change. So shanas i nottne. Thank you for joining us. Emilys list has said theyve helped elect every congresswoman currently serving. Next, an organization helping people with jobs. Elmos got the moves.
