Out in philadelphia here were still dealing with some road flooding but some good news. Delaware avenue is open again. Were dealing with all lanes in the northbound side open and one lane getting by southbound so far from vine street into Market Street. Additional traffic in new jersey. Brook lawn due to the flooding take 295 to get by. Septa, new Jersey Transit and the patco line no problems there. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live with an update on the street closure that jessica was just telling us about. Jesse, what can you tell us . Reporter vai, weve moved positions just within the past maybe ten minutes or so. You can see how much the water has receded here on the southbound avenues. Theres a Police Vehicle blocking off the two lefthand lanes and the one farthest to the right is open. One lane on the southbound open and all of them on the northbound are open. When we got here this morning that water that you see there extended all the way across and we were parked in the parking lane. It is slowly but surely receding. Theyve opened the lanes up all of them on the northbound side. Slow going but you can get through. Live at penns landing, jesse gary nbc 10 news. Thank you, jesse. Happening now in Delaware County crews are work being to get the power back on after an explosion last night. This comes to us from radner township. You can see there are some crews out there on the scene. Officials tell us that the explosion happened underground at 6 00 p. M. Yesterday and now some underground cables need to be replaced and repaired. 24 customers are still without power. Crews arent sure yet what caused the blast and theyre still trying to figure out if yesterdays storms were a factor. New from overnight, police are investigating a shooting in south philadelphia. Investigators tell us the victim was shot in the shoulder on jackson street. He was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in stable condition. No word on a suspect or a motive. The latest today, a philadelphia mom accused of abandoning her disabled son in the woods will appear before a judge in maryland. Nyia parler is scheduled for an extradition hearing. Police say she left her 21yearold quadriplegic son in the woods in Cobbs Creek Park so she could go visit her boyfriend in maryland. Her son has Cerebral Palsy and cannot communicate. A passerby found him five days later. He remains hospitalized at Childrens Hospital of philadelphia. A top cop in Cumberland County is facing drunk driving charges. Investigators tell us that lieutenant edward zdroga pulled out of a bar on sunday night and collided with another car. Nobody was injured in the crash but investigators say he failed a field sobriety test. Guess you have to face the consequences like everybody else. Theyre regular people too, and sometimes we make mistakes. The lieutenant had been a spokesperson for the police force and more recently he was the ranking officer in charge of the department after the retirement of millvilles police chief. Thats not the only negative attention surrounding Millville Police department lately. A woman has started an online petition calling on the department of justice to investigate three Police Departments in Cumberland County, including millville. The other two are vineland and bridgeton. The petition comes after several Police Involved deaths. The first happened in december when jerome reed was shot and killed during a traffic stop in bridge ton. Just last month Phillip White died shortly after an altercation with police in vineland. The petition has 48,000 signatures so far. We reached out to the Cumberland CountyPolice Department but have not heard back. Today a judge will sentence a Delaware County teacher on child sex abuse charges. Paul hoschwender pleaded no contest to abusing at least nine students in two Different School districts. The families of two 8yearold victims claim the schools did not do a background check on j bp hoschwender. They say that would have shown several abuse charges in the past. A woman walking to her car in the fishtown district was robbed and raped. The woman said two men stole her purse around midnight saturday and threatened to shoot her if she fought back. According to the police the attackers then took her to an ally and assaulted her. There have been no arrests yet in this case. A Soccer Player at the university of delaware is facing rape charges this morning. They say paul defaeo went to the accusers home after meeting her at a restaurant. They claim thats when defeo sexually assaulted her. Hes charged with rape and strangulation. A Washington TownshipPolice Officer recently cleared of misconduct charges wants his job back. Last month a jury acquitted officer joseph debuonoventura stemming from a 2012 arrest of assembly man paul moriarity. All charges against moriarity were dropped after his arrest. Debuonoventura remains suspended despite his acquittal of the charges. His lawyer is arguing that the suspension is unlawful. Now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. According to investigators, coalman was behind the wheel of this white suv when she deliberately hit Beatrice Spence in knightstown on friday. Spence lost her leg and is still in the hospital. Police say the two women were fighting over the same man. Nbc 10 talked to Philadelphia Police about the recent rash of hit and run cases in the city. We found out that when compared to last year numbers do not look good. Investigators tell us in 2014 there were just 5 hit and runs that killed pedestrians and this year weve already reached that number. Two of those hit and runs happened last week. One of the victims, 2yearold david alaceo was killed in kensington. He was laid to rest yesterday. Investigators say the owners of the car that hit him live in central pennsylvania. They tell police a Family Member had borrowed it when the boy was struck. That same day 4yearold latif wilson was killed by another driver in kingsessing. They found the suv involved in that crash. The driver has a lawyer and is expected to turn herself in. She has yet to do so. The death of a maryland man while in Police Custody sparked protests over the weekend. Hands up. Dont shoot. Protesters marched down the streets of baltimore yesterday demanding answers about the death of freddy gray. He died sunday a week after his spine was fractured while in Police Custody. The arrest was caught on cell phone video and the citys Police Commissioner says its still unclear why gray was stopped in the first place. Six Police Officers have been suspended and the commissioner has ordered an immediate review of some policies. A coyote captured in north jersey after a recent attack will be tested at a state lab. The norwood Police Department says the coyote is responsible for attacking a man who was walking his dog over the weekend. The attack in norwood came two weeks after another coyote attack about ten miles away in saddle river. The coyote in that case attacked a man while he was gardening. That was on april 6th. The man was not seriously hurt. The animal did test positive for rabies and was euthanized by authorities. Nfl star devon still will speak to people today at the Pennsylvania Convention center. Still is originally from wilmington and he made headlines last year when his daughter leah was diagnosed and treated for cancer. A Government Task force is now recommending women should get routine mammograms every two years beginning at the age of 50. They suspect that breast screening in your 40s shows little benefit but it should be a personal choice. So for women at average risk starting at age 40 could prevent one additional death. It can lead to nearly 600 false alarms for every 1,000 women. Washington lawmakers are asking them to look at ingredients used in cosmetics, skin cream and shampoo. Reporter rosemary, all the lanes have been reopened here on Delaware Avenue at pens landing. If you were with us earlier this morning you know that flood waters had moved from the sidewalk all the way taking up 2 and a half of the lanes out of the three lanes. The only dry stretch roadway was the turning lane where we were parked. Once it stopped raining, an hour passed. That flood water slowly receded. We have video though. Well show you how it got there in the first place. Overnight we had heavy, heavy rain move through. This is the ben franklin parkway. Several inches of water moved through. You heard the lightning, thunder, et cetera. The result of that with some flooded streets. One of them here along Delaware Avenue. That is all open now. And this was the scene late last night. 24 customers still without power. The impact damaged a few businesses and rattled residents. Next thing i know were heading out the door and then after that there was a big explosion. Got knocked off my feet. I can feel the heat. So i heard the fire alarms go off and i ran to the back. Like i hit the ground really hard from just the explosion, the force hit me. Crews arent sure what caused the blast and are still trying to figure out if yesterdays storms were a factor. A philadelphia day care worker will stand trial today accused of leaving five children locked inside a running car while she went shopping. Karin thompson is charged with child endangerment. Prosecutors say she left the kids 6 months to 9 years old alone while she went into the shop rite last july. Another shopper who was in the parking lot heard the children crying and called police. Investigators say they were in the car for at least 30 minutes but were not seriously hurt. In Delaware County the controversy continues in colwyn borough since they held their first meeting since they changed president s and ousted the manager. Youre nuts. You are nuts. There were two big issues that boiled over at yesterdays meeting. First, the council now needs three people to sign borough checks in order to pay bills. And former Council President paul mewser said they told him he cant be one of them. Former borough manager showed up and accused Council Members of shredding, as you see there, those documents. Shredded friday have been shredding all week. We were able to retrieve that amount. Nobody did any shredding of borrow documents or anything like that. Absolutely not. Brown says she plans to take the bags of shredded papers to the District Attorneys Office today. Meantime, the council was asked for the state to supply the borough with a temporary borough manager to help handle their finances. State officials in delaware have reached a 2. 75 million settlement with a former poultry vaccine plant accused of contaminating wells in mills borrow ten years ago. The agreement with mallinckrodt estimates that cleanup costs could top 10 million. The Philadelphia Historical commission will soon hold a hearing on the fight to save a Catholic Church in fishtown. Supporters of Saint Laurentius Church says theyve accepted a nomination for a hearing to decide if the church should be considered an historic building.
