Right now swede street is closed in addition to other closures marshall street is blocked off near dekalb and markley. Airy street is closed between swede and barbadoes. The courthouse is a up colecouple blocks away. As a result bus routes 90 96 98 and 131 are on detour. Breaking news from overnight, skyforce 130 over0 over the scene of a deadly Apartment Fire. Three people were hurt including a firefighter. Others were forced out into the cold. Nbc 10 was the first on the scene of this fatal fire that broke out at 12 45 this morning on swede street in norristown. Jesse gary is live on the scene and has been throughout the morning. Whats the latest . Reporter well, i just checked with fire fwishlofficials about two things that could impact people this morning. The nearby school and the nearby courthouse although they say theres no reason for them not to open this morning. You will have to find an alternate location to get to the locations down here though. The fire is under control and they are working to tap it out completely. You can see them working in the back portion. We have video from earlier this morning when the flames started. The fire Officials Say, the fire chief said it started in the basement and went up the trash chute. This is the second time in a week the firefighters have been called to the norris Apartment Building here on swede street. But once the flames made it up to the trash chute and up to the roof, even though this building had a working sprinkler system. It will find its way into spaces without sprinklers. Sprinklers are controlled contents burning in a room. They are not meant to control fires in void spaces. That sets a danger. When the fire gets into a void space, it will travel in the normal path of the walls in tight chases and goes from the lowest level to the highest level of the building. Reporter and the highest level was the roof of the building. One person was killed in this and two residents were injured. A third person a firefighter, also injured. All the injuries are minor. 21 residents were displaced because of this fire and have been taken to Norristown High School for a temporary staging area where weapon find Monique Braxton. Monique . Reporter jesse, the 21 people you mentioned are near at Norristown Area High School. We have been told they are all single no families are involved here. And just moments ago, new information for you now. Nine people arrived from the building next door because their power has now been shut off because of the fire. The American Red Cross tells us they are operating this shelter, cots are being set up and snacks are being served. Take a look at this video that we just obtained from a firefighter. You see frightened residents of this building being rescued from the fouralarm blaze. Firefighters are using two or three ladder trucks to help people escape the flames and smoke from the top floors. We have heard that one person passed away and three others were injured with injuries considered to be minor. We apologize for the audio problem. Well get an update from monique coming up. And we have breaking news from Mercer County where one Trenton Police officer is hurt after a driver narrowly crashed into him. The driver kept going but was found shot a short distance away. Nbc 10s katy zachry is live in Hamilton Township piecing this together all morning long. Katy, what do we know happened . Reporter hi, tracy. You laid it out nicely there are two scenes. This is the second scene youre looking at right now where the suspect was found shot. This is his vehicle. Pretty badly damaged, but lets start with the first scene. Thats where a Trenton Police officer was sideswiped by the suspects vehicle. It happened at wallnut and chestnut avenues at 1 00 this morning. Investigators say at least one Police Officer was outside his cruiser when the suspect drove at the police car hitting that officer standing outside in the leg. The suspect kept driving because to our second scene where he was found just over the city line in Hamilton Township, he had crashed into several cars on this stretch of road and the driver had been shot when they got to him. They are investigating right now if he was shot by police or if he was shot by someone else. Now back out here live on east state street in Hamilton Township the suspects car is still in the middle of the road. The road remains close but investigators say they are handling the case and right now we are told they are interviewing the officer who was injured at the hospital. His partner at the scene as well as the suspect who was found shot. He was suffering from nonlifethreatening injuries and police hope to talk to him over the next few hours. The plane clipped the bridge of a freeway and crashed into a river, but investigators are still trying to figure out why it all happened. Well take you live now to taiwan. Police say a masked man walked into bottoms up at fifth and wyoming around 11 30 last night and pointed a gun at people inside demanding cash. No one was hurt. Investigators are still searching for the robber. And a man is in Critical Condition after this accident in new castle county. Delaware state police say the male was walking along route 1 near route 40 when a car hit him. The car did stop. No word if charges have been filed. And a transformer caught fire in one philadelphia neighborhood overnight. Nbc 10 is on the scene at 57th and lebanon avenue in winfield where the transformer fell off a utility pole and landed near a car. The vehicle suffered minor damage. Nobody was hurt. But there was a small power outage in the area. We have new information on a deadly train crash near new york city. Seven people are confirmed dead after a commuter train crashed into an suv at a crossing. It happened last night on the metro north line about 20 miles north of new york city. Heres what we know the train slammed into a Jeep Cherokee. The jeep and front of the train caught fire witnesses say the Railroad Crossing geatz came down on top of the suv which is stopped on the tracks. One passenger said he and hundreds of others scrambled to safety. A number of us were smelling fumes from the car, fuel and we said we needed to get out as the fire was spreading back to the second car. The second car finally did ignite. Authorities say the driver of the jeep and six train passengers died. Several others were hurt. The impact was so powerful that it pierced the train. That happened in the same crash that occurred in 2013 in the bronx where four passengers died in that derailment and dozens were hurt. Investigators determined in that case that the engineer fell asleep and the train went too fast into a curve. Yesterday was a bitter cold wind. It is cold outside. Right now rescue crews are searching for 24 passengers unaccounted for. We know 15 people survived the crash including a child. And back here at home check out this video of a fake grenade a man used to hold up a center city bank last night in south philly. A Police Officer released the surveillance pictures of the man they are looking for. You can clearly see his face. Police hope you recognize him. Skyforce 10 was over the scene at the bank at 18th and walnut with the robber walking into the bank before 5 00. He had that phony grenade in his hand and demanded cash from the teller and took off running. 6 17 now. A camden woman who knows all too well the price for violence is hoping to unite the community during a peace march last night. Allen griscoe was killed during an argument back in january on 2010. Then William Price was shot at a camden home thats the son of griscoes widow. She lost her son and husband two years apart. She organized a march for tonight at 30th and berkeley at 7 30. Hundreds of homeowners in salem county met with fema last night to discuss concerns over Flood Insurance policy. The residents say they live in a floodprone area and the cost of insurance is skyrocketing and forcing more foreclosures in the area and driving Property Values down. I am so sad and so depressed about the Flood Insurance policy issue and the Economic Issues but i think its the final nail in our coffin. Well keep reminding you about the detours because you will need them typically traveling through nor ristown. Reporter tracy, the Fire Department officials are pulling back some of their equipment, not here but on the scene as they take back their engines and the inflatable Warming Center they set up. The fire continues to burn on the backside of the fivestory norristown Apartment Building. This is video from earlier this morning when flames were shooting through the roof. The fire Officials Say the fire started in the basement and made its way to the trash chute. Once into the trash chute, it was up into the open spaces of the building above the sprinklers and the sprinklers were not affected. 21 residents were evacuated from this building and also residents from neighboring buildings. When i went and look towards the back the whole top floor, the back part of the building you could see flames in the roof line and flames all around the window screens and everything. Reporter one person was killed in this fire. She was brought out as firefighters tried to rescue her and performed cpr and took her to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead. Two residents and a firefighter also have minor injuries. The cause for this fire is under investigation. Fire Officials Say they were out here just a week ago because of a stove fire. Somebody was cooking and left it on the stove and that started a fire, so they have been out here twice in the past two weeks, this time a fatal fire. Live in norristown, jesse gary nbc 10 news. A Trenton Police officer is recovering after being hit by a car. And investigators say the officer was hit in the leg and then the suspect kept going. The suspects car was found a short distance away in Hamilton Township as he hit several parked cars. The suspect was found with a gunshot wound but its not clear who shot him. The officer and suspect were not seriously hurt and both are being questioned by investigators. And now to breaking news that were following overseas. A car on a highway in taiwan captured this stunning video of a passenger plane going down shortly after takeoff. The jet clipped a freeway bridge and crashed into the river below. We have a live picture out of taiwan. This is the search and rescue operation underway in tapei where its about 7 30 in the evening there. Some eight hours after the plane went down with 58 people on board. The latest count is 19 people are confirmed dead 24 are missing and 15 survived. And then we just got this new video showing the damage to the bridge where it was hit by the plane. The witnesses say the transasia jet weaved between buildings before clipping the overpass with its wings. The pilot radioed a mayday just before the plane crashed. And the search continues this morning in burkes county where a man tried to abduct an 11yearold. This is the sketch police are looking for with the victim walking to a bus stop on park road north on monday. The man grabbed the child by the arm and demanded that the child go with him. The child was able to break free and run away. New jerseys property taxes are already the highest in the country and still going up. According to the asbury hard crest, the property tax jumped 2. 2 in 2014. The fastest increase in two years. 6 36. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf wants independent state commissioned agencies to ban gifts to their employees. Wolf sent letters to more than two dozen agencies yesterday making the request. The governor already signed an order on his first day in office forbidding executive branch employees from accepting gifts. The control board and the turnpike adoptions should have the same plans. Officials are asking anyone who saw anything unusual last thursday morning to give them a call. And a photographer in Cape May County is trying to retrieve his runaway drone. The drone vanished in flight more than a week ago in lower township. Now a few days ago someone elses drone spotted it on top of an abandoned water tower that you see here. If you look close enough here you will see it. Im trying to. The two tried to grab it with a makeshift hook but it didnt happen. Well, after several snow delays, jury selection is set to continue today as zo Dzhokhar Tsarnaevs lawyers are trying to get his trial moved. More than half who have filled out questionnaires have said they believe hes guilty. And the federal judge could decide to approve a classaction settlement involving remmington rifles. They have been battling allegations that many of their rifles are defective. The Company Covered up a design flaw that causes the rifle to fire without pulling the trigger. The settlement would mean remmington needs to replace the triggers on most of the rifles in question. 6 46. Screening screeners is what the Obama Administration and congress are looking at when it comes to airport security. Right now not every airport worker goes through the same physical security checks that air travelers do. But that could change after the tsa arrested an atlanta baggage handler in a gun smuggling case back in december. This is the suspects car found in Hamilton Township after he fled the scene with police. The driver hit several cars on east state street and was found with a gunshot wound but police say hell be okay. Swede street is closed between oak street and airy street in addition to the big closure on swede street we also have closures on marshall street thats blocked between dekalb and markley. Airy street is closed between swede street and barbadoes street. Oak street and Chestnut Street are also closed. Taik take de kalb main street or markley street. If you work at the courthouse, as you know this portion of swede street gets busy in the morning. Just down the road is the Norristown Transportation Center. So as expected as we have been reported all morning long, bus routes 90 96 98 and 131 are delayed. Clouds moving through the area with temperatures already starting to move up.
