This is a live look at the vine in center city and thats the westbound side as drivers head out to 76. Thats where we can see some delays later in the morning, but for now its still pretty quiet as far as any delays go. And the area bridges are also in the clear right now. Chris . All right, jillian. 6 01 now. New from overnight, weve confirmed that a row home fire in reading killed two people. This happened on spruce street in reading around 8 30 last night. Now, someone who was in the area at the time snapped this photo. We found it on the social media discovery app banjo. You can see just how big the flames were at the height of this fire here. Investigators have not released the identities of the victims, but neighbors tell us that an elderly couple lived inside that home. Investigators in philadelphia are trying to figure out if an overnight garage fire is suspicious in nature. Two Police Officers were actually injured at this fire in frankford. Heres what happened. There was a car in the garage at the time. A shock absorber blew off the car, hitting both officers in the leg, breaking the leg of one officer. The other officer needed stitches. Two people who live near the garage are out of their homes this morning. Police in bucks county say a man who shot an intruder who was trying to break into his apartment will not face charges. This happened last night along bobolink drive in bensalem. Investigators say the burglar broke into one apartment and stole a dog, and then he tried to get into a second apartment and the resident there shot him. What he was looking for, we are not really sure but one homeowner, he confronted one homeowner who stood his ground and fired twice, shooting him both hitting him both times. The suspect right now is in critical condition. 6 03 now. Today an autopsy is scheduled for a 10yearold boy who was hit and killed by a Police Cruiser as an officer was responding to a call. The accident happened at delsea drive and paul street in Franklin TownshipGloucester County. Nbc 10s jesse gary joins us live from outside the Franklin TownshipPolice Headquarters with the latest on the investigation. Jesse . Reporter chris, i talked to the overnight supervisor here about this and i was told that the chief is the only person who can answer questions about this departments policy of using lights and sirens when responding to a service call. I also contacted the county Prosecutors Office but i havent heard anything back about the investigation. The accident happened last night as the victim and two friends walked to i sleepover. The boys family says the 10yearold crossed delsea drive, its also route 47, and never saw the Police Cruiser coming before it hit and killed him. Two other children were unharmed. The officer behind the wheel was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. Now, witnesses say the patrol car did not have flashing lights or siren activated. Police will not confirm or refute that. Ive been looking online and found that a lot of people across the country like the idea of police having the lights and sirens, because that alerts them to move out of the way, but some worry it can lead to excessive speeding by some Police Officers and crashes. Theres one local department that kind of came up with a policy change to address that and ill tell you about that coming up in 30 minutes. Happening today in montgomery county, several people charged in a penndot Corruption Scandal are scheduled to appear in court. Ten people are accused in an overbilling scheme that prosecutors say cost taxpayers 1. 2 million. Two penndot managers and eight contractors are charged. The attorney general says those managers took kickbacks to look the other way, ignoring falsified time sheets and mileage reports. Today, seven of the defendants have a preliminary hearing. A man is hit and killed in Burlington County around 5 30 yesterday in mt. Laurel. Police say a car struck the victim on south Church Street between academy and st. David drive. The driver stayed on the scene. The victim has not yet been identified. Divers returned to the Schuylkill River to resume their search for Shane Montgomery yesterday. Nine divers from the garden state underwater Recovery Unit combed the river where montgomerys keys were found two weeks ago. The 21yearold West Chester University student disappeared early thanksgiving morning after a night out with friends in manayunk. They did an extensive search of mostly on the main street side of the river. With the current being the way it is, the dive team believed that thats the way shane would have gone. Shanes family has vowed to continue searching for him until he is found. The reward for information in this case now stands at 65,000. Police in delaware say an 18yearold man led troopers on a chase in a stolen car before crashing. The pursuit began just after midnight when an officer spotted the car going through the intersection of Old Baltimore pike and salem church road in newark. The trooper realized the car was stolen, tried to pull over the driver. Police say the chase continued until the car hit a curb at old coach road and Henderson Hill road. 18yearold Michael Gordon was taken into custody and faces numerous charges. Six children are charged with trespassing after Philadelphia Police say they broke into a school. Investigators tell us the kids stole markers and other small items from the Walter Palmer charter school. The alleged young burglars are all between 10 and 12 years old and are not Walter Palmer students. Police think that the kids broke in after they heard the school was shutting down this week. 6 06 now. Happening today, a philadelphia lawmaker will call for support of police and changes in the relationship between Law Enforcement and the public. State representative Curtis Thomas will hold a briefing at 11 00 this morning. A statement from his office says thomas will call for the expansion of Police Advisory committees, regular Police Meetings with the community and additional bike police. Tensions remain high between police in many communities across the country, as evident by a protest this past weekend. Some gathered to support police while others demonstrated against recent policerelated deaths. Thousands of officers turned their backs to the screen showing new york mayor bill de blasio at the funeral for Brooklyn Police officer rafael ramos. Many Police Officers blame him for furthering the divide but the Police Commissioner called the display inappropriate. Well this is a mayor that cares very deeply about new york city Police Officers cares very deeply about the divide in this city at this time and is working very hard to heal that divide. One solution that is getting overwhelming support, officers wearing body cameras. Many people believe it will help rebuild the trust between citizens and officers. And in northeast philadelphia, a church spread the message spoken by many protesters across the country, black lives matter. A large group gathered for this service yesterday. They prayed for peace and talked about ways to bridge the gap that they say exists between Law Enforcement and the community. Know that all lives matter but were bringing the church and the Community Together just to keep these issues before the people. The church also has a program in which officers talk to members of the community about how to interact with police. Medical experts in west africa say malaria is killing thousands more people than ebola. According to doctors there, the push to stop ebola has hurt the countrys battle with malaria, which is preventible and treatable. In guinea malaria is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5. In adults only aids kills more people there. And back in the states the Ebola Response coordinator called a recent cdc lab accident unacceptable. A Lab Technician mishandled materials during an experiment and may have come in contact with a live ebola virus. Its in the 20s. Thats a live view from camelback, where it has been completely dry. But we are tracking just rain drops in delaware. The temperatures are still in the 40s for central, southern delaware and into south jersey. A few rain drops over cape may, but those will quickly come to an end this morning. The temperatures are not bad for this time of year. 27 degrees is the normal low temperature in philadelphia this time of year but its 40 degrees right now. 30s north and west where the clouds have already started to clear. The temperatures will be slowly climbing during the day today. 41 degrees at 9 00 43 at lunchtime and then into the middle to upper 40s this afternoon. Same situation on the new jersey turnpike and 42 is freeway of any big incidents, although voluming is starting to build. Heading to vineland we got word of an accident on the northbound side of 55 right near 674, which is exit 35 for north vineland so keep that in mind. It is a singlevehicle accident in that area. Heading to Chester County route 30 bypass still looking pretty good at route 322. Typically on the eastbound side right there, thats where we can see some delays a little later in the morning but for now, as you can see, traffic is still moving. In Gloucester County investigators are trying to figure out how a Police Officer hit and killed a child while responding to a call. The accident happened at delsea drive and paul street in Franklin Township early last night. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live outside Police Headquarters. Jesse, tell us what happened. Reporter tracy, this young boy was crossing the street when he got hit. Now the investigation is centered on whether or not the officer had lights and sirens on as he was responding to that police call. The accident that claimed a 10yearolds life happened last night as the victim and two friends walked to a sleepover. The boys family says the 10yearold crossed delsea drive, which is also route 47 never saw the Police Cruiser before it hit and killed him. The coroner has scheduled an autopsy for today. The Gloucester CountyProsecutors Office is also investigating. Last year one Delaware ValleyPolice Department changed its policy. Philadelphia Police Officers responding to a call must get permission before they can go lights and sirens. That was done to try to reduce the number of policeinvolved crashes. And all morning weve been following new developments in the search for that missing air asia flight with 162 people on board. It went missing over the weekend. The plane disappeared sunday morning over the java sea on its way from surabaya indonesia, to singapore. Just before it went off radar, the pilot asked for permission to increase altitude because of rough weather he was trying into. Now, this is new video of the search effort happening right now this morning over the java sea. Here we go. Crews are working now to figure out if two oil slicks and some objects that were found in the water are connected to the planes disappearance. Now, the objects were not close to the oil slicks. These are two different areas. Officials say they believe the plane probably crashed into the sea. Back here at home, new developments from toms river. A man wanted for running over his girlfriend three times is now under arrest. James cruddup is charged with attempted murder. He was caught around 7 00 last night. The alleged attack by vehicle happened early yesterday morning at the hess gas station on route 37. Police say the victim was pinned against a gas pump and then struck two more times. Shes being treated at Jersey Shore Medical Center and is expected to be okay. In Philadelphia Police are investigating whether the victim of a hitandrun could have been running from an armed robbery. The man was struck around 12 30 yesterday morning on whitaker avenue in feltonville and is hospitalized right now in critical condition. Authorities say they found a gun and a mask at the scene, both of which match the description given by a pizza delivery worker who was held up earlier in the night on nearby tampa street. Detectives are still looking for a possible connection. 6 35. This morning, friends and family are remembering a young girl who captured the hearts of people nationwide as she battled a devastating and rare illness. Hannah ginion lost her battle with crabe disease yesterday, shy of her second birthday. Her family posted this message on Facebook Hanna was called home to be with the angels. She went peacefully. Please keep us all in your prayers during this difficult time. Hundreds of people attended a vigil in hannahs honor last night. She had a rare genetic disorder that damages the nervous system. Hannahs family says if she had been diagnosed with it at birth doctors could have done more to help her. Thanks to their efforts now, pennsylvania passed a new law that now tests for crabe and five other disorders in newborns. She changed the world, and were just so blessed to have everybody here for us because its something that you cant go through alone. We wouldnt have gotten through this if it wasnt for everybody here all these people. They all played their own little parts in every step of the way. Now, there is no cure for crabe disease. Its a singlevehicle accident but you can expect to see some restrictions in that area. Also a little slowdown. But as i mentioned, that is the only accident of the morning so far. So that is a bit of good news for drivers out there. At least were not seeing too many problems right now. This is 95 southbound side right near girard avenue. You can see 95 starting to crawl along right now, but thats nothing out of the ordinary. In fact your drive times on 95. You can see that line of red, reading about 16 minutes right now from woodhaven to the vine. Average speed is about 52 miles per hour. Thats right near cottman avenue, but then it slows down past cottman, and as you make your way into center city thats where things get really slow. 76, normal volume to report there. At 6 43 we want to update some breaking news weve been following all morning about that fire aboard a greek ferry. The number of People Killed is now up to five. And a rescue operation thats under way, the Associated Press reports, has now scudamore than 400 people from aboard the ferry. Now, that would leave still a few dozen stranded aboard the ferry. The first group of survivors arrived to safety overnight and again, still a few people stranded on that ferry between italy and albania in the aid adriatic sea. A Burlington School has raised nearly half of the money it needs to stay open. They have raised about 120,000 according to its website. The Trenton Diocese gave the school a deadline of january 15th to raise 250,000 or shut down. The diocese says it can no longer fund st. Paul because of declining enrollment. Inauguration day is less than a month away and pennsylvania governorelect tom wolf has formed an Education Transition team with strong ties to philadelphia. Wolf has picked pedro rivera as the committee cochair. The former philadelphia teacher and principal is now the School Superintendent in lancaster. Among the developments expected to take place in the new year the outcome of the states efforts to help Atlantic City more movement on new jerseys internet gambling the fate of the former rebel casino and the possibility of casinos opening in other parts of the state. Well the mummers are putting the finishing touches on their performances for the annual new years celebration, but this years parade will be a bit different. Organizers say declining membership soaring costs and elaborate productions have prompted some changes, so this year the parade has a new route, a shorter route, which is expected to save money on police overtime. The mummers expect about 8,000 participants. About a decade ago, that number was as high as 12,000. But the mummers say it wont take away from the show. Its amazing. Ive been doing this a long time. New from overnight, Los Angeles Police are searching for a gunman they say opened fire on a police car last night. Officials say two officers were driving in a neighborhood when two people shot their squad car. One officer fired back. One suspect is in custody. The other one is still on the loose. No one was hurt. In alabama, a young boy jumped two stories out of his burning apartment building. Your mama right here your mama says do it come on. Oh, my god come on. You can hear the emotions as that neighbor catches the little boy. This was early Christmas Morning in birmingham. Six people were hurt in the fire, four of them children. Everyone is expected to survive, though. Investigators say food cooking unattended on the stove started the fire. And this morning, investigators in texas are woring to figure out what happened inside this home where four people were found dead. Police say a 9yearold boy called a relative and said a man inside the home had attempted suicide. That relative quickly called police, and when authorities got to the home in crowley, they found those four bodies. The 9yearold was not hurt. And in california, a surfer survived a shark attack over the weekend. The man was pulled under water by a young great white shark who bit down on his hip. The surfer was able to paddle to shore where he used the leash cord from his surfboard to make a tourniquet. Two doctors who happened to be at the beach were able to help him until he was airlifted to a hospital. The Obama Administration is on the verge of proposing longawaited rules for commercial drones in the u. S. But key decisions are likely to come from Congress Next year.
