This is city avenue, closed in both directions in wynnefield between 59th and 54th streets, all because of an accident involving an overturned vehicle. The driver lost control, ended up on the sidewalk, hit a few trees, so we have a lot of debris scattered across the road this morning. You can take woodbine avenue or overbrook avenue to get around it. Vai . New from overnight, several homes destroyed. Two people hurt. But it could have been worse if not for a Good Samaritan who witnessed a row home fire in philadelphia. The fire broke out around 11 45 last night on park avenue in the citys honey park neighborhood. Jesse garys live on the scene. Je jesse, do investigators know what caused the fire . Reporter the fire marshal still wont say. Residents are telling us this fire started on the porch of this row house here on park avenue. This fire started late last night. Flames growing from one row house and eventually engulfing four row houses. Nbc 10 first on the scene capturing the fire as firefighters worked for an hour to extinguish the blaze. All of the residents ive talked to say there were no smoke detectors and they didnt know there was trouble until they saw or smelled smoke, and then escaped with their lives. I freaked out, you know. I came outside with no clothes on. All these clothes that ive got on now are somebody elses clothes. I have nothing. Reporter red cross officials now say they are assisting eight people, including those who stay at the red cross house in west philadelphia. Live in hunting park this morning, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. It is 6 03. One man is in the hospital and another on the loose after police say they robbed a Delaware County pharmacy and led officers on a chase. Investigators say the men robbed a pharmacy near Baltimore Pike in Clifton Heights around 7 00 last night. Police started chasing their getaway vehicle, which eventually crashed in upper darby. The suspects ran in Different Directions and officers shot one of them in the leg. The other one got away. Saw some guy hop out of his car, run laps and then 30 cop cars zoomed by. Did you ever see anything like this before in your life . No, no. Thats the first time. The suspect is in stable condition. Police say they do have a good description of the other suspect because his i. D. Was in the car. There will be extra Security Officers on patrol when students return to class today in the Pocono Mountain School district. Classes were canceled yesterday after a man believed to be eric frein was spotted twice near pocono mountain east high school. Police and the fbi went through three district buildings and also searched dumpsters. Frein has been on the run since september 12th, when hes accused of killing a state trooper and injuring a second. And eric jamison is scheduled for a preliminary hearing today, charged with murdering 20yearold alex guevara at a philadelphia youth concert. Guevara was shot to death in the parking lot of the Dell Music Center in Fairmont Park this summer, attending an antiviolence concert. Police say he and the suspect got into an argument over a woman. The board of education in sayreville will conduct a full investigation into the High School Football program. Last night the board suspended five coaches in the program in connection with the hazing scandal. The board voted unanimously to suspend the head coach and four assistants from sayreville high school. Seven of the teams Football Players have been charged with crimes ranging from hazing to sexual assault, and the schools football season has been canceled. Heres the rain that moved past monique. Its now in philadelphia. This is light rain that is coming down, but with the wind, it feels heavier. We have seen some very heavy downpours in ocean county. Those storms are now pushing offshore, so improving conditions for toms river right now, now that the lightning is off the coast. And in delaware, these are some steady showers that are starting to accumulate. Radar indicates that theres more than an inch of rain on the ground already in portions of New Castle County. In fact, this is the total rainfall estimate based on radar. And look at ocean county. More than 5 inches on the ground from the morning thunderstorms. Those thunderstorms have tapered off now. And southern delaware and New Castle County, southern New Castle County in delaware, just over an inch is on the ground but barely any accumulated so far in philadelphia. And the volume you see right here, thats southbound right near cottman avenue. A lot of heavy volume out there southbound, basically from cottman all the way into center city philadelphia. Your drive times are indicating a delay on 95 southbound from woodhaven to the vine. That will take you about 21 to 25 minutes at this point. 76 eastbound from the blue route to the vine is about a 17minute trip. Were just starting to see that normal volume building on 76. If youre traveling the blue route northbound from 95 to 76, thats about 17 minutes right now. And i mentioned the accident on city avenue. And heres what we found. Since 2012, police in new jersey got more than 15,000 pieces of military equipment. Delaware nearly 24,000. In pennsylvania, police got more than 33,000 pieces of militarygrade gear. Now, president obama has ordered a review of the military surplus gear giveaway, but the white house is leaving it up to individual Police Agencies as to how, where, and when to use the leftover military equipment. This morning were learning more about the death of retired Philadelphia Police officer virginia hill. The medical examiner says that she was shot. Hills body was found at her suffolk, virginia, home early saturday morning. Investigators are treating the case as a homicide, but there are no suspects or a motive. Hill spent 20 years investigating missing children cases here in philadelphia. One of those cases was the 1993 murder of 15yearold jon simons. Simmonss mother says his body was found, thanks to detective hills work. She talked to nbc 10 about officer hills legacy. Initially, i didnt respect her gift. And i know its a gift. It will be a rainy, windy start, 14mileanhour winds in philadelphia and 12mileanhour winds for wilmington, northeast philadelphia at the airport and trenton right now has a 12mileanhour wind. We saw some thunderstorm activity to start with in delaware. Still some pretty good showers in New Castle County in delaware. Thats a line of showers that extends into trenton. The heaviest rainfall by far has been in ocean county. Some areas seeing more than 5 inches of rain. But now the heavier showers are offshore. And look at this. New from overnight, fire consumes five homes in philadelphia, but a quickthinking neighbor helps people escape the flames and the smoke. An nbc 10 camera was first on the scene. The fire broke out around midnight on park avenue in the citys hunting park neighborhood. The fire started in an end unit but then spread down the block. Flames damaged or destroyed five homes. One neighbor driving by stopped to help rescue people from one of the burning homes. Two people were taken to a nearby hospital, but their injuries are said to be not lifethreatening. Right now, Philadelphia Police are on the hunt for two men wanted in an overnight home invasion. Investigators say the armed men stormed into a home around 3 00 this morning on West Summerville avenue in olney. Police say two people inside were not hurt. Theyre investigating what was taken. Were expecting developments in the battle against ebola today. Starting today, there are new restrictions for people entering the country from the ebolaravaged areas. Meantime, airport workers here in philadelphia say not enough is being done to protect their safety. Nbc 10s katy zachrys live at the airport with more on the changes workers are asking for. Katy . Many of them are on the front lines interacting with passengers every day, and they say they want more than just latex gloves as a barrier. Cabin cleaners are leading this latest call for Better Safety measures, worried because they wear just latex gloves to protect them against potentially harmful fluids and bloodborne pathogens that passengers could bring on to a plane. Last week, one cabin cleaner testified before Philadelphia City council about the need for better protective gear. And at Laguardia Airport in new york, workers went on strike over similar concerns. Passengers i talked to seem to think their fears are warranted. Not the latex gloves in and of itself. Theres got to be other things that they do. You never know where the planes been or whos been on it. The superintendent of maple shade schools is apologizing for the ebola scare in the district last week. Thats according to the courier post. The yocum elementary nurse sent a letter home to parents saying she was going to monitor two students from rwanda. They werent sick, but the letter concerned many parents and garnered national criticism. The new students ended up delaying their start date until next week. Police are renewing their warning about riding dirt bikes and atvs on city streets in philadelphia, even after a rolling memorial involving those very vehicles. Kyrell tyler was shot and killed in southwest philadelphia last week. Police have not made an arrest. Yesterdays procession followed tylers funeral with the bikes weaving through traffic. Police told us they gave the riders a break because they were mourning their friend, also a dirt bike rider. But eventually, they had to crack down. Now are doing a little bit of a push to get some of the riders off of the streets, again to make sure that we ensure the safety of those that are commuting. Philadelphia police emphasizes, it is illegal to ride most dirt bikes and atvs on city streets. Now to philadelphias School Budget crisis. A hearing will happen today in harrisburg on the contract fight between the School Reform commission and the teachers union. On monday, a judge issued a temporary injunction. That means teachers will not have to pay for their own health benefits. The src, which canceled the contract october 6th, said the city cannot afford to keep giving teachers free health benefits. And happening today, all lanes are open on the patco highspeed line that goes across the ben franklin bridge. After months of closures and reduced service. But additional work needs to be done on the track Rehabilitation Project that will affect weekends. On saturdays and sundays, trains will run at 30minute intervals. That is the westbound side right at passyunk avenue as you make your way to University Avenue and the vine street expressway. Heavy volume on 76 this morning. And as you can see, the roads are definitely wet. Same in new jersey and delaware as well. Still have an accident on 202 southbound on the shoulder near route 29. On the shoulder, not blocking anything or causing any delays, but it is still out there now, so use caution if youre headed there. Authorities say its because of increased chatter from radical groups like isis and al qaeda. They said there is no specific terror threat. Meantime, three teenage girls are back home in denver after they apparently tried to join isis fighters in syria. The girls were stopped by fbi agents in germany before they could board a flight to turkey. Authorities say the teens parents actually tipped off airport security. Officials say its doubtful the girls will be charged since they are all under age. And isis militants claim to have a u. S. Air drop that was intended for kurdish fighters in syria. This propaganda video shows a man opening the boxes and revealing what appeared to be weapons. The u. S. Military says one of its bundles of supplies did go off course over the weekend but was later destroyed by another air strike. In philadelphia, it looks as if a bill revising the citys hate crime laws is going to pass. The measure okayed by a City Council Committee stems from an attack on a gay couple in center city last month. Police say the suspects in the case are seen here on this Surveillance Video, which is taken moments before the assault happened. The bill would increase penalties in cases when a hate suspect is found to be motivated by the victims sexual gender. The suspects are said to have asked about their Sexual Orientation before punching and beating them. One of the men his jaw broken. Defense attorneys deny the fight was motivated by Sexual Orientation. Williams, harrigan and knott are charged with aggravated assault in the case. Now new information on what police call an inside job in the Armed Robbery of a drexel hill restaurant. Investigators announced a 5,000 reward for information in the Chickies Petes holdup. Youre looking at Surveillance Video of the robbery happening on sunday morning. Several employees were forced inside a walkin freezer, as you see here, before the robbers got away with more than 16,000. And now to what could be the Biggest Police layoff Montgomery County has ever seen in decades. The layoffs are happening in franconia township, which covers about 15 square miles or the northern part of the county. Six of the townships twelve officers will be let go on november 1st along with three township employees. The township manager tells nbc 10 franconia is operating at a 900,000 deficit. The police union is now demanding to know why there is such a big budget shortfall. Happening today, we are expecting an update from the centers for Disease Control on enterovirus d68. There have been more than 930 confirmed cases of the respiratory illness in 46 states. The cdc expects infections to decline by late fall. Youll remember, a 4yearold from Mercer County died of the virus last month. Meantime, right now is the best time to get vaccinated for the flu, according to the centers for Disease Control. Ben bradlee passed away yesterday at the age of 93. He had suffered from alzheimers disease for several years. Last year, bradlee was awarded the president ial medal of freedom. It moved through cape may. You can see there puddles on beach avenue, but look at the skies starting to break. Still plenty of clouds ahead. 57 degrees. The rain has tapered off in philadelphia, but not the wind. Its at 14 miles an hour. You can see the flag blowing here at the nbc 10 studios. Clouds overhead and occasional rain showers is what were in store for today. There have been some heavy winds already. Weve seen winds gusting to 24 miles an hour in philadelphia. Theyve settled down a bit. Now 14mileanhour winds in trenton. And those winds will continue to blow some showers into the area. Thunderstorm activity this morning in delaware is pushing now into maryland. Still some pretty good rainfall in parts of New Castle County, but its very light rain thats moving into chester, montgomery and bucks counties. Trenton is seeing some steadier rainfall. Most of the rain, the heaviest stuff has been in ocean county, where some areas have picked up more than 5 inches of rain, really isolated totals there. Scattered showers in the pocono mountains and now into the Lehigh Valley as well. And this storm system is centered to our south. Its all spinning around a low pressure area thats going to stay with us today, tonight and tomorrow. So, we will continue to see onandoff showers and gusty winds, too. That will keep temperatures cooler today, into the upper 50s and low 60s. Tomorrow, yes, keep that umbrella handy. 59 degrees after a morning low of 48. Occasional showers on thursday. For a while now, city avenue has been shut down because of a serious accident. Lets get an update from first alert traffic reporter jillian mele. Good morning. It is still out there. City avenue is blocked off in both directions in wynnefield. This is a live look at the scene right now happening between 59th and 54th streets. No traffic is getting by at all right there. Thats an overturned vehicle. Youll notice we have a lot of debris out here, especially over here on the shoulder. This is because that vehicle was traveling southbound on city avenue, lost control, wound up on the sidewalk, hit a few trees. So, we have a lot of branches down in this area. So, crews definitely still have a lot of work on their hands this morning. If you need to get around this accident, you can take woodbine avenue or overbrook avenue to get around it. Reporter vai, that Good Samaritan helped people escape the row house right on the end that was on fire, and thats where the fire started late last night. The fire started here and then spread up the block, up park avenue to consume actually five total houses, forcing people out into the street. Many of the residents say they did not hear smoke detectors going off. They were alerted to the trouble by either smelling smoke or somebody saying, hey, look, there are flames outside. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of this fire. Live in hunting park this morning, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. Today some workers at Philadelphia International airport dont think enough has been done to ensure that they say safe from ebola. Nbc 10s katy zachry is live at the airport with more. Tell us more about their concerns, katy. Reporter well, tracy, later today well hear from those workers. Many of them are on the front lines every day here at the International Airport interacting with passengers, and they say they want more protection than just latex gloves. Men and women who clean the airplane cabin are behind this recent call for Better Safety measures. Theyre worried because they wear just latex gloves to protect them against potentially harmful fluids and bloodborne pathogens that passengers could bring on to a plane. The workers will gather at 3 00 p. M. At terminals bc to voice their concerns. Back out here live at the airport, i did talk to one airport worker off camera who tells me because she has not been issued a face mask or gloves by the airport, then shes mindful of the concern right now and keeping her distance from travelers. Were following a number of accidents, including two in new jersey. We have an accident on the Atlantic City expressway eastbound at berlincross keys road. Also, we have one in stratford, northbound side of white horse pike, route 30 at arlington avenue. Thats a serious accident, so watch out for official activity. Heading to cedarbrook, a new accident. Just got word into our system. Cheltenham avenue at washington lane, that intersection is blocked off right now. You can take stenton avenue to get around it. Heading up to the Lehigh Valley, were seeing rainfall right now on the majors there. This is a live look at route 22 right near airport road. Not reporting any accidents on 22, 78, even the northeast extension, but as you can see, that rain has definitely started to come into the Lehigh Valley, so you can expect to see slippery conditions across most of the majors this morning. They moved through stafford, too. And parts of ocean county picked up more than 4 inches of rain first thing this morning. And close to an inch and a half in parts of southern New Castle County in delaware. Look at the heavy rain that is moving to the west into maryland right now. So, showers, theyre going to be on and off, but you can see not everybodys getting them at the same time. Were all seeing temperatures in the 50s this morning, and the temperatures have been holding very steady. Not looking for a big warmup or a big cooldown. Right now it is 55 degrees in Camden County and glendora is at 54 degrees. So, uniform temperatures will warm only into the low 60s this afternoon with onandoff showers and gusty winds as well. 56 degrees at lunchtime and the winds will still be going at 4 00.
