New details in effect for mass transit travelers around this route 39 and route 57. Those two buses now detoured around West Kensington due to that fire and all the fire crews in that location of american street and york street. Because that intersection is closed, if you need to get around that fire crews suggest you stay away from that area so they can do their jobs. If you need to travel in that area, front street or fifth street is the best way to go. Now, this is where that fire, this is one of the buildings, american supply that is affected by this fire and this is the intersection of american and york and several other streets around it. About three blocks in each direction are shut down to traffic. This over here, this is John Welsh Elementary School and also hunter Elementary School on front street. Two schools that were going to be watching, especially when it comes time for parents to drop their kids off and any traffic implications that has. Right near John Welsh Elementary School and thats where we find ka t katy zachary live out there this morning. What is going on out there . Just to give you some perspective. This fire broke out around 2 30. It is 6 00 a. M. 3 1 2 hours that fire crews have been working on getting this fire completely out. It is under control. It went under control around 4 00 p. M. Aplets lets go to sky force 10. As i give you the details, this fire broke out around 2 30 this morning inside a vacant building on the corner of 24th and american street. It spread to an adjacent warehouse, which is a paper company. And if we go to our video now, you can see from our video how that paper inside the burning building helped to fuel the fire. The flames were so intense, they were several stories high when we pulled up the the scene. The firefighting effort had to be done from the outside of the building only. No firefighter could ever go inside the building. It was just too dangerous. The blaze quickly went to four alarms at the height of it. 125 firefighters from around the city were here on the scene pouring water on to this blaze. 33 pieces of equipment and trucks were used. Many of them still being used out here right now. Philadelphia police, they were out here, as well. Dealing with road closures and crowd control. In terms of injuries, two firefighters received minor injuries, but the worst injury of the morning came from a civilian. Someone who happened to be inside one of the buildings when it caught on fire and when firefighters arrived, they found that individual coming out of the building. Their body dealing with more than 80 burns. That person was actually on fire. The fire commissioner tells us when fire crews arrived and they were running from the building, we still dont know if that person is an employee or what their role is here at either of the buildings. The paper factory, we understand, is operational. The warehouse, where the fire started, that is vacant. So, keep that in mind. So, still, quite a scene out here. As we come back out here live. We are just a block away from where all of this unfolded. Its where weve been throughout the morning. We talked to many people who left their homes, who voluntarily came to the corner and wanted to see what was going on. We understand that there were no eeevacuations of homes or businesses in the area. To give you some perspective, this is a busy area and West Kensington and this neighborhood is a mix of residential, commercial, some Industrial Buildings here. We are about a block away from lehigh avenue. A very busy stretch as we come into the morning commute around now and a few blocks away from Temple University hospital episcopal campus. Important to keep away from this area as christine just gave us some road closures. Now, jesse gary live above the scene in sky force 10. Katy, i have been noticing as the sun comes up you get a better idea of the street closures in this area around the fire scene. About three blocks on either side, east and west and north and south about five blocks. When katy says stay away from the area, that area is larger than just the scene that is burning. You want to bear that in mind and pay close attention. As for the fire, you can see that its still smoking, but that smoke has dissipated greatly. We landed and got some gas about 20 minutes ago and on our way back you could see that that thick smoke trail moving down to south philadelphia, it is lessened greatly. So, firefighters are doing good work putting out the flames and some orange hot spots that still continue to glow at the fire scene. But a vast improvement from what it was a couple hours ago when we arrived on scene where you couldnt see nothing but an orange glow and a heavy black smoke over that. Additionally a building to the right of your screen as we pan right a little bit. We were telling you about that. The company a little while ago, a furniture manufacturer based here in philadelphia. The mid40s. That building has heavy smoke damage. The smoke billowing from the fire scene going directly into that building. Sustain the fire damage, but definitely smoke damage. So, if youre in the area, you moy want to close your windows because its still pretty smoky out of here. Another update for you coming up in the next few minutes. So, that is what were seeing with these road closures.
