Volunteers will help many Students Walk to school. Katy zachary is live to explain this morning. Morning, katy. Its called walk safe philadelphia and youll see it here at mcdaniel elementary as well as other schools in the district. This Program Began several years ago when two dozen philadelphia schools closed and those existing students were sent to different schools. The city wanted to offer a safe way for those kids to walk into new neighborhoods. Adults familiar with the areas volunteer in the morning and after school to get the kids to and from home safely. They wear vests that identify them and have walkietalkies so they can radio each other and police if there is a problem. Everybody is feeling the pinch of something being taken away. And the volunteer is what fills that gap of what is being taken away. Extra eyes, extra set of ears, a hug. Stability. Those types of things.
