And we wanted to know why this is happening and whats being done about it. Trample, two teens were recently arrested for raping and robbing a woman who was walking home from the gym. And then these two 15yearolds are charged with shooting and killing a man who was out walking his dog. And then there are the group attacks like this one on a septa platform last month that seem to be becoming more common. One local group said its committed to stopping this behavior. Nbc 10s katy zachry sat down with youth united for change. Theyre working with students every day to try to stop those kinds of crimes right . Reporter yeah chris. The counselors we met with even share their own personal experiences with the students in hopes of dissuadeing them from reacting in a way that could harm themselves or others. Now, these are some of the counselors we sat down with. They are a part of youth united for change. They really act more like mentors to about 150 students in the kensington area. Students pour into the space after school and talk about issues they may have with classmates or with teachers other adults. They also talk about not having money to buy things and how they can change that. When violence does take place outside these walls like what we saw in overbrook last month, it reinforces to this group the nonviolent tactics they try and teach. Were their counselors. Were the people that try to talk them through that trauma but not every young people has access to that. And thats the importance of thats what the importance of the Community Comes in. Reporter now, some of these nonviolent tactics that the group teaches include speech writing, writing proposals and demonstrations. So how do some of those students in youth united for change react when the violence takes place in philadelphia . Im working on that story for 6 30. Reporting live in center city katy zachry. And just yesterday a Youth Violence summit where the philadelphia mayoral candidates gathered. It was called philadelphia matters. Now, today those candidates will be at another debate. The six hopefuls will tackle questions at the Community College of philadelphia in spring gardens. This will be their third forum this week. Primary is may 19th. This morning were learning more information, new information about that officer whos accused of killing an unarmed black man who was running away from him in South Carolina. Overnight we found out that that officer was actually accused of Excessive Force in another case against an unarmed man. That accusation was investigated and was unfounded. Also a protest rally in North Charleston last night called for justice and better communication between police and the community. Officer Michael Slager charged with killing walter scott last saturday is being held without bail. He has also been fired. Law enforcement in South Carolina expect to release dashcam video they say could shed light on what happened before the deadly shooting. Now, the man who shot that cell phone video spoke exclusively with nbcs lester holt. When i got on the scene, i saw them on the floor already. Like i say, on the floor. He was maybe two seconds, i dont know if he felt the Police Tackle him and take him down. Like i say, i didnt witness that. But the officer was on top of the of mr. Scott, and like i say, he had control of the situation. Now, that Deadly Police shooting in South Carolina is having a Ripple Effect in this region. Neighbors in south jersey who knew Michael Slager tell us hes not what they remember. The former Police Officer used to live in Burlington County and people in mount laurel said theyre really trying to grasp that its slager on that cell phone video shooting walter scott in the back as he ran away. I remember michael as a very nice boy, very nice. Went to school here. Knew my children. Helga shays husband, larry, told nbc 10 he just cant understand how someone from his neighborhood could do Something Like this. 5 35. Parishioners are stepping up their fight to save this church in fishtown. A church the archdiocese of philadelphia says is in danger of collapsing and needs to go. The parishioners have collected more than 2,000 significant tears to save the church. Theyre holding a Community Meeting tonight at a nearby rec center. Some Church Members have raised around 50 500,000 to repair the building themselves. The archdiocese wants to tear it down. Today delawares Emergency Management agency will hand out potassium iodide tablets to residents living within ten miles of the Nuclear Generating station. People who live and work in that tenmile radius can pick up the tablets between noon and 7 00 p. M. At the townsend fire station in townsend, newcastle county. Delaware state police say cortez hamilton killed his wife keisha with a hammer in front of their two children. Police issued an amber alert for her and her children january 10th after they all disappeared. Authorities arrested cortez the same day in indiana where they found him with the children but there was no sign of keisha. At the time of her disappearance, neighbors said the couple had domestic problems. Were learning more about the kidnapping of a philadelphia Jewelry Store worker. The Mayors Office is offering a 10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible for what happened over the weekend. Meantime plans to repair the 5th street viaduct rail bridge in south philadelphia are moving forward. City councilman Kenyatta Johnson announced the multimilliondollar project yesterday. So he had drawn these sketches on the backs of some paintings that they had. Yeah. Its not unusual for him to have worked on both sides of his sketch book.
