Im told i just checked in and im told investigators are out there with traffic able to get by that. No closures are associated with that. Moving north to Montgomery County elkins Park Township line road is closed between cedar road and route 611 for road repair work they are doing. And also around this hour this is when construction on the majors lifts. But just to tell you about this on the pennsylvania turnpike westbound, the right lane is closed between the exits for route 1 and 611. We continue to follow breaking news for you out of the taconey section of philadelphia. Police are investigating multiple car fires. One of the fires spread to a nearby home. Nbc 10s jesse gary has been gathering information on this story. Hes live along dittman street. Tell us more. Reporter tracy, right now the fire marshall has returned to say he had a couple things to check into. He back here to check on the damage to the mercury mariner. This is the mostly severely damaged near the suv with the fire spreading up to the bottom of the secondfloor bedroom. Now the fires actually began at 1 00 this morning with a blaze over on toysdale and robins here in the tacony section of philadelphia. That was a dark colored nissan parked right out on the street that went up in flames. It is pretty badly damaged. Then here in the 6300 block of dittman a fire burned this suv and the second floor bedroom of this row home. Fortunately the family inside Alexander Abad and his 8yearold daughter made it out of the home thanks to his neighbors dog who woke up the neighbors and the neighbors were able to go bang on the door to get everybody out. Those neighbors had three kids. So in total, four children and the adults all made it out safely. As for the investigation on the fire marshall here hes processing the scene. They had dogs out sniffing for an accelerant and are trying to see if the two fires are connected and if they believe its arson. Well have more on this coming up in the next 30 minutes. Live in tacony jesse gary nbc 10 news. And developing overseas isis deadline for japan to pay ransom for the two hostages passed two hours ago. They posted an online clock that counted down to zero. The archdiocese placed him on leave a year earlier because of unrelated abuse allegations. This morning a former philadelphia homicide detective is charged with hiding and helping his girlfriend wanted for a murder in philadelphia. The d. A. Yesterday announced a grand jury indictment against ronald duff. His exgirlfriend Erika Sanchez stabbed her exboyfriend and then was driven to new york by her boyfriend. Local and state investigators are looking into the death of jamane reid. He was warned several times to not move after finding a gun in the car with which he was a passenger. Then reid shoved his way out of the car before he was shot to death. The two officers are suspended while the prosecutor investigates. In bucks county members of a wellknown family is accused of bilking a company out of 20 million. Claire risoldi, two other family members and two associates were charged with two fires in a mansion to scam insurance companies. They also accused firefighters of stealing jewelry during the last fire in 2013. I knew my guys didnt take nick out of the house, but we were accused. Now authorities cleared the Midway Volunteer Fire Company of any wrongdoing. Investigators seized 7 million in assets including a million in jewelry, six ferraris two rolls royce, one ford mustang cobra and other highend cars. Officials plan to make a Big Marketing push at the New York Times travel show. The goal is to promote the Atlantic City casinos. They will have the largest display area of any city at the show. More than two years after hurricane sandy, people in Atlantic City get a chance to tell their state about the concerns for future storms. Back to the weather, the nbc 10 first alert weather is tracking this noreaster headed our way. Were expecting snow sleet and freezing rain moving in overnight. Right now road crews across the area are once again getting ready. Monique braxton checked in with penndot this morning. What is their battle this time around . Reporter good morning to you, chris. Right now penndot is tracking the storm like we are, figuring out the best plan of action. Theyve got about 97,000 tons of salt on the ground. And to the distance on the left trucks are being loaded with salt as well as brine. There are more than 300 trucks on standby in the philadelphia region for tonights storm. Heres the big question that will have a big impact on what road crews will have to do. Will there be more snow or more rain . If its mostly snow the crews will get in the plows and push it away. If were expecting more rain that could possibly be freezing rain. Then crews will have to spray more salt brine solution to avoid a situation like last sunday with parts of i76 the pennsylvania turnpike, i95 as well as the bridges closed down at the same time. But for now, penndot is doing the same thing that were doing, theyre watching bill henley and the first alert forecast to see exactly what we can expect tonight and tomorrow morning. Live from norristown monique braxton, nbc 10 news. Did you hear about the quiet before the storm. Thats what well see today, lots of sunshine. But it will quickly change tonight as the noreaster were tracking the arrives late this evening overnight tonight and into saturday morning. It will start as snow in philadelphia. New castle county delaware, well see snow to start with. But overnight well see a changeover briefly to sleet and freezing rain before it becomes all rainfall during the day in philadelphia. Snow will continue to fall in areas north and west. Right now temperatures are falling. Look at the pocano mountains, 18 degrees. The 20s for trenton and dover. They are taking advantage of the cold from the mountains. This is a view from camelback. Snow is falling from this noreaster in the pocano mountains. But youll see it to the south with the radar now completely clear. This will be coming up the east coast during the day today. It will be producing heavy rainfall in southern alabama and into florida heading towards georgia. But it is making progress. The future weather developing noreaster showing it arriving in the d. C. Area by 6 00 this evening. If youre hitting the road going south, youll see it before the rest of the area. If you stay put, by 8 00 in the evening, you can see snow falling in northeastern maryland. By 10 00, its in the philadelphia area. Look how quickly it is spreading into the Lehigh Valley at 10 00. Snow is in delaware and south jersey. But farther to the south and east, that is just rain. So i only expect to see rain to start with on this one in cape may, central and southern delaware. Then that warmer air pushes to the north saturday morning early in the morning. It is still snowing in philadelphia and areas to the north. But that warmer air will change things over to a brief period. A brief period of sleet and freezing rain before it comes rain. The snow have continue for an extended period north and west. Thats why i expect to see additional accumulation for the Lehigh Valley. Before it gets here lots of sunshine with temperatures into the very low 40s. Well talk amounts and look at the sevenday when im back in ten. Ten minutes after 5 00 now the roads are dry this morning. Tomorrow morning could be a little dicy. Well get you to work and home from work have you prepared for tomorrow. Its in the deep south with heavy rain in southern alabama, the panhandle of florida. And its moving into georgia. But it will arrive here tonight as snow. At 5 14 an update now on a story the nbc 10 investigators have been looking into. You may remember this food truck explosion. It killed a woman and her daughter last summer in philadelphia. They were inside at the time. City Council Introduced a bill that would regulate the safety of food trucks and their propane tanks in the city. But Council Never took a vote on it. Nbc 10 Investigative Reporter Harry Hairston went to the City Council President daryl clark for an explanation. Clark told us the fire commissioner put the bill on hold. The commissioner dedicated he would like for us to sit down prior to any passage of a bill to get an understanding of what direction were going to go. And then to proceed with something that will withstand a challenge. We spoke to the fire commissioner derek sawyer who says until the state gets involved nothing will happen. He also said theres been no meeting between the city and state and none are scheduled. 5 15 now n the Lehigh Valley the pocano Medical Center is bracing for a possible nurses strike. They set a strike date of february 1st. The move follows eight weeks of unsuccessful bargaining. 500 nurses would hit the picket lines. A victory for the Philadelphia Teachers Union in an Ongoing Court battle. They sided with the union to say the School Reform commission cannot cancel the Union Contract and force teachers to pay into the health care costs. The district says that move would save 200 million over four years. Now its evaluating what the next move may be. And some parents in philadelphia say they want a choice for where their kids will go to school. National School Choice week kicked off sunday but supporters in philadelphia got an early start with a roundtable discussion at the National Constitution center yesterday. Advocates of School Choice believe parents should have more options when it comes to where their child gets an education. A reason to celebrate at rutgers. The university surpassed a 1 billion goal that it set during a sevenyear fundraising campaign. The campaign was called our rutgers, our future and ended on december 31st and brought in in just over a billion dollars. That is the largest in the schools history. Very few issues to report this morning. The school is free and clear of any issues at least until maybe later tonight or tomorrow morning. But well take it while we can get it right . I like this shot because its a lit shot of a great intersection. And this is really indicative of how most of the roads in new jersey look. They are really dry. You might find a little bit of salt, but this is route 70 at kings highway in cherry hill where things are looking great. Moving into pennsylvania theres a closure on mac dade boulevard in darby between route 13 and pershing avenue because of longterm road work. Be aware of that. And also moving into chester county, route 202, your drive times between route 30 and 76 if thats part of the morning commute. Its looking really good. 10 to 11 minutes in both directions. Today is going to be nice. Well see lots of sunshine. But tonight a completely different situation. Ive issued a first alert for a noreaster coming in making for hazardous travel later this evening, overnight tonight and into saturday morning especially. Thats when well see accumulating snowfall change over to sleet and freezing rain for a brief period before becoming all rain in philadelphia. But north and west its going to be dicier with more snowfall. 29 degrees in philadelphia. Its cold now but well see a quick warm up today with lots of sunshine. You will see sunshine in the pocano mountains with temperatures near the freezing mark this afternoon. And snow will be arriving later tonight and into tomorrow morning in the mountains. Look at the temperatures its cold. Pottstown, doylestown 20 degrees. Now down to 24 in wilmington. 25 in arbon. Theres cold air around but well see lots of sunshine. The clouds are not here yet, but you can see them just to the south and there is the storm that is moving through the south and making some progress now inching into kentucky. Its onset to arrive here this evening. And it is going to be affecting i95 corridor and areas north and west. Look at the future snow totals. At 8 00 this evening, the precipitation will still be to the south. Maybe a little bit of rain in southern delaware but that changes quickly. By 11 00, we are closing in on an inch of snow on the ground in philadelphia and well mington. And snow will be starting to accumulate in the Lehigh Valley. Thats at 11 00 tonight. By early tomorrow morning, 1 00 in the morning, two inches on the ground for philadelphia and wilmington. Closing in on the mark for reading. Look at lancaster, three inches of snow. The snow will continue north and west while rain moves in from the south. Thats really going to limit snow totals for south jersey and into central and southern delaware. Its just going to be rainfall. But it will continue to accumulate accumulate. As we watch this system pull away by late this evening four inches on the ground in lancaster. Four inches up to reading and allentown. While they are looking at one to three inches for philadelphia potentially, the snowfall is much lighter in delaware and south jersey. Well see the snow out of here probably during the Morning Hours in philadelphia early before sunrise that will changeover to rain. But there will be snow on the ground for people getting up and hitting the roads Early Saturday Morning and first thing on saturday. And there will be snow on the ground, even as it changes over to rain. So it will be making for a slushy mess for much of the morning on saturday into saturday afternoon. And its depending on where you are when the changeover will happen . Correct. Well see that changeover in delaware and south jersey before in philadelphia. And farther north and west it will be an extended period of snow mixing in with sleet and freezing rain before they see the changeover. Okay. Well be keeping an eye on it.
