New from overnight, police are looking for the person who carried out a Home Invasion in the kensington section of philadelphia. Police say a masked gunman forced his way into the home on kip street around 2 00 this morning and stole cash and jewelry. Police say security cameras captured the whole thing. No one was hurt. Also new from overnight, fire forced nearly a dozen people out of their north philadelphia home. It broke out just after 11 00 at a home on north lee street. All nine people inside made it out safely. Investigators are working to figure out what caused this fire. About four hours from now, the man accused in that deadly ambush that happened outside a Pennsylvania State Police Barracks last fall will appear in a courtroom. Prosecutors are expected to ask for the Death Penalty this morning when eric frein shows up in court. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 00 this morning at the pike county courthouse. Thats in milford, p. A. Now, todays hearing, a judge will decide whether freins case will go to county court for trial. Authorities say he confessed to the deadly ambush saying that he wanted to wake people up and cause a change in government. Frein was captured on october 30th after 48 days on the run. It was a manhunt that cost the state of pennsylvania more than 11 million. Corporal Bryon Dickson died in the september 12th ambush outside of the Police Barracks in blooming grove. Trooper Alex Douglass was also injured in that ambush. Live in the digital operations center, im vai sikahema nbc 10. A trial is also set to get under way this morning for a former leader of a Philadelphia Ironworkers Union who was accused of threatening and sabotaging nonunion work sites. 73yearold Joseph Dougherty a former member of local ironworkers 40 is the only one to go on trial. The other 11 members already pleaded guilty. Federal prosecutors say the group used violence and arson to intimidate builders into using their union labor on construction projects. 5 02. The future of the former revel casino could finally start coming into focus today. Its been quite a saga. Nbc 10s katy zachry is live in camden this morning, where katy, a federal judge will hold a hearing today about the possible ownership of that property. Reporter thats right. Its been playing out over the last few months chris. And later this morning, inside the courthouse behind me a federal judge will consider selling the revel casino to the runnerup bidder in last years bankruptcy auction, but for how much remains the question. Now, the firm that originally won the bid to buy revel backed out because of debt associated with the power plant that was built to run the casino. Now, casino management has turned to florida developer glenn straub who was the runnerup bidder in last years court auction. He offered 95 million, but now he wants to pay less. Revel casino closed in september after just little more than two years of operation. It was one of four casinos to shut down in 2014, leaving a total of about 8,000 workers in Atlantic City without jobs. Thats the latest live in camden this morning. Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia postponed his trip to the city because he says he wants to wait until all elements are in place for the popes trip to the youd later this year. Archbishop paglia was also supposed to attend a celebration for the feast day of st. John neumann. That event will still take place this afternoon. Philadelphia police are trying to track down three men accused of holding a woman captive for hours and sexually assaulting her. Authorities tell us the men took the 20yearold victim to a row home on kennedy street in wissinoming saturday night. Thats where they assaulted her and then released her some time yesterday. Police say the victim knew at least one of her attackers. It is 5 05 and were learning more about the limo driver who was gunned down this weekend in West Philadelphia not long after he started his new job. The victim is 24yearold mijael rodriguez ramirez. Theyre based inside philadelphia Police Headquarters behind me. They tell me there are no new developments in the case overnight. They still want the publics help in trying to solve this. Family members tell me mijael rodriguezramirez recently took a second job driving limos as a way to earn extra money to support his wife and his infant daughter hennessey. Saturday night, he picked up two customers in West Philadelphia. He dropped one and then drove the second to the 5400 block of delancy street in West Philadelphia. That is when investigators say the customer shot and killed him and stole money and his cell. You came out to the street just for making money, like serious job, and this is ridiculous. Reporter industry sources cite statistics showing murders of taxi and limo drivers in the u. S. Have dropped by almost a third from 2011 until last year but Police Detectives tell me this morning that people in this occupation are always targets because a lot of the time they deal in cash. Now, coming up in the next hour well look at some of the safety features that industry insiders say help prevent cabbie and limo driver murders. Family members tell us his death appears to be an accident. An autopsy was finished yesterday, but montgomerys uncle says the medical examiners still waiting on toxicology reports. Now, divers found montgomerys body on saturday in the Schuylkill River behind the manayunk brew pub. He vanished around 2 00 a. M. Thanksgiving day after a night out with friends. The 21yearold will be remembered later this week. A viewing will be held at st. John the Baptist Church on thursday night from 5 00 to 9 00 and then again friday morning at 9 00. The one issue that weve been dealing with throughout the morning that is still there is the downed pole from an accident that happened overnight in lower moreland. And as a result a part of byberry road blocked off between Huntingdon Pike and masons mill road. County line road is your best bet to get around that. After a shooting at a home in long beach. Police say 3weekold eliza dela cruz was found in a dumpster in the san diego area. It is unclear how she died. The baby was abducted on saturday after a man shot her parents and uncle at a home. They are all expected to survive. Police believe the family was targeted. Theyre still searching for the shooter. Investigators in Northampton County are expected to release more information today about a man whose body was found inside a rooming house. That house is on fillmore street in bethlehem. Police say they responded to the home yesterday afternoon after getting a 911 call about an altercation. They have not released the victims name or said how he died. Police took one of his neighbors into custody and say charges are pending. His name has not been released either. This is bethlehems first murder of the year. And grief counselors will be at Franklin Township School Following the death of a fifth grader. Last week a Franklin Township Police Officer hit and killed 10yearold Matthew Mccloskey as he was crossing delsea drive. The officer was responding to a call. He right now is on paid administrative leave. 5 14 now. An American Health worker who was exposed to ebola while working in sierra leone is now under observation at a hospital in nebraska. That patient was greeted by paramedics in full body gear after landing in omaha yesterday. The Health Care Worker will stay at the hospital for 21 days to be monitored for signs of ebola. And a doctor from the hospital of the university of pennsylvania will return to west africa to treat ebola patients this week. Nbc 10 was at the airport in october when dr. Trish henwood left for liberia. When she came home in late november, she had to undergo a 21day monitoring period just to confirm that she did not have symptoms of the virus, which she did not. U. S. Senator chris coons of delaware said the ebola situation is improving in liberia. He just returned from a trip to west africa at the end of december. Senator coons said the u. S. Troops dispatched to that region have made great improvements. Hes now calling for a new strategy to help liberians take over the work started by those u. S. Troops. North korea is slamming the u. S. For imposing sanctions against several government officials in the wake of the sony cyber attack. A statement from north Koreas Foreign Ministry accused of u. S. Of stirring up hostility toward pyongyang. The u. S. Imposed the sanctions on friday calling it an opening move in response to the hacking. North korea continues to deny any involvement. It is 5 15. Merlino will report to a federal Detention Center in miami this afternoon. In october, a judge ruled merlino violated the terms of his supervised release on a 2001 racketeering conviction when he met with known mobsters in florida. Today, a real housewife faces the reality of prison life. Teresa giudice will begin serving her sentence for fraud at a prison in connecticut. The real housewives of new jersey star was sentenced to 15 months. Her husband, joe, also pleaded guilty to fraud and will go to prison after she is released. Lawmakers in north jersey will call on the Port Authority to cancel its plans to get rid of overnight path service this afternoon.
