And the neighbor is being treated for smoke inhalation. Were learning new information about the officer accused of killing an unarmed black man who was running away from him at the time. While you were sleeping we found out the officer was charged with Excessive Force against another unarmed man, but the charges were later called unfounded. Also a protest rally in North Charleston last night called for justice and better communication between the police and the community. Officer Michael Slager charged with killing walter scott last saturday is now being held without bail. Law enforcement in South Carolina expect to release dash cam video that could shed light on what happened before the deadly shooting. Here at home neighbors in south jersey who knew Michael Slager tell us hes not what they remember. The now former Police Officer used to live in Burlington County and people in mount laurel said theyre trying to grasp that its really slager on that cell phone video shooting walter scott in the back as he ran away. I remember michael as a very nice boy. Very nice. Went to school here. Knew my children. Helga sheas husband, larry, told nbc 10 that he just cant understand how someone from his neighborhood could do Something Like this. And Walter Scotts family is praising that man who shot the video of the Deadly Police shooting. Nbcs lester holt spoke exclusively with santana, the man who shot the video. He described the scene. When i got on the scene, i saw them on the floor, like i say, on the floor. He was maybe two seconds, i dont know if he felt the Police Attack him and take him down. Like i say, i didnt witness that. But the officer was on top of the of mr. Scott, and like i say, he had control of the situation. Santana said he turned his video over to the victims family because he wanted to find out the truth about exactly what happened. Happening today, parishioners of a fishtown church that the archdiocese says is in danger of collapsing are fighting to save their historic building. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live outside the church this morning. Matt, why do some of the people there want to save this church . Reporter well, tracy, they say its historic. Its been here for more than 100 years. And some of these folks say they do not want it torn down. Yesterday some of the members of save the church met with the City Council President , darrell clark. Hes also taken a role in trying to stop the church from being demolished. The archdiocese wants to demolish it because of structural and safety issues. Now, the church is closed. It merged with another parish in 2013, but some members of the Church Community have spent the past several months raising money to the sum of over 500,000 for repairs. Hopefully theyll take his spirit of living the gospel and looking at people who want to put something put effort into something and pass on to their kids like im trying to pass on to my kids. And come up with a better solution than just a wrecking ball. Reporter there is a meeting tonight at the rec center on blair street. Thats when people who are trying to save this building will decide the next step in their fight. So if this cant be a catholic parish, then what else do folks want this to be . From our Delaware Bureau a Kent County Court has indicted a man for murdering his wife even though police have not found her body. Delaware state police say cortez hamilton intentionally killed his wife keyshia, with a hammer in front of their children. Police issued an amber alert for keisha and her children on january 10th after they all disappeared. Authorities arrested cortez the same day in indiana. They found him there with the children but there was no sign of keisha. At the time of her disappearance, neighbors told nbc 10 the couple had domestic problems. This morning one person is dead, another hurt following a car crash in camden county. Two cars ran off the road and into the trees in voorhees last night. One victim went to cooper hospital. No word yet on the cause or if rain played a factor. Meantime another accident sent three people to the hospital in philadelphia last night. Investigators say a car hit them when they were walking at fifth Spring Garden in northern liberty. Two women and a child are in the hospital. Theyre expected to be okay. Police interviewed the driver and are continuing their investigation this morning. A local deejay who performed at many weddings and childrens parties is now behind bars. Nbc 10 was in king of prussia yesterday where corbin appeared in court. Hes facing aggravated assault and firearm rzs charges and being held on bail. Police say corbin was in the back seat of the family car arguing with his mom and dad. They say corbin pulled out a gun and shot his father while his father was driving. Police say the father albert corbin, is expected to survive. The mother was not hurt. Were also learning more about the kidnapping of a philadelphia Jewelry Store worker. The Mayors Office is now offering a 10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the kidnappers. On tuesday investigators released this Surveillance Video of a burgundy van they believe was used. Jurors who convicted the Boston Marathon bomber will be back next week to decide if tsarnaevs punishment is life or death. The jury found him guilty on all 30 counts yesterday. The panel deliberated just more than 11 hours before reaching the verdicts. Some family members of the victims and survivors of the blast reacted. Obviously, grateful for the outcome today. This morning the coast guard is keeping an eye on a commercial fishing boat that ran aground off the jersey shoreline. It happened off Point Pleasant beach. The coast guard responded to a call for help from the 77foot captain gavin yesterday morning. Its a fishing vessel. This is cell phone video from where the boat is stranded. Three people were on board but nobody was hurt. And officials are trying to figure out the best way to free the vessel. And take a look at this video from the canadian coast guard. These ice breaker ships are trying to clear a path through the thick ice on lake superior. That ice nearly eight feet deep. In some places. And thats led to whats essentially a traffic jam for more than a firefighters i should say freighter ships. The ice even punched a hole through the hull of one of those ships. So cars are just getting by in that right lane because the emergency crews and that accident are blocking the road there. Plans to repair the 25th street viaduct rail bridge in south philadelphia are moving forward. City councilman johnson announced the multimilliondollar project yesterday. Csx owns the bridge. The councilman called it a major threat to public safety. Some debris that falls from the bridge on a regular basis. During the wintertime you have huge icicles falling from this bridge. Its always been an area of concern from the residents. Railroad crews will replace the walls and restore the drainage system and bridge deck. Meantime officials broke ground yesterday for the second phase of a major road project in Montgomery County. Lower merion township released a report after the fallout after two officers stopped two black men shoveling in a driveway. Police in delaware want to know who spraypainted hateful graffiti on several properties tuesday night. These are photos of some of the damage. Weve blurred out the offensive language. Five people reported to police that someone spraypainted their cars, garage doors and front doors. Pennsylvania is working on what the regulation should be if the state legalizes medical marijuana. The state health house and judiciary committees held a hearing yesterday. Prosecutors and police told lawmakers about the importance of strict regulations needed in order to legalize medical marijuana. Montgomery County District attorney said lawmakers have to ensure that the proper people are prescribing, distributing and receiving any medical form of the drug. Ithe thing we can do is benefit from the experience of other states who have done this experiment. And who have gone down this road and use their experiences so that pennsylvania can craft a system where we can give patients who need this medication and drug. The f. O. P. Says Police Agencies have concerns that pennsylvania may endorse the use of marijuana as pain relief. Now, pennsylvania is the only state in our tristate region where medical marijuana is not legal. Users in new jersey have to pay a 200 fee. Delaware users have to pay a 125 fee. 4 56 now. This morning officials with the new Jersey Transit are working on ways to clear out an unwelcome oweder that isnt sitting well with passengers. Officials say the smell is actually coming from the bucks county rail yard. Thats where the trains are kept which is about a quarter of a mile from a mulch factory in morrisville. A spokesperson for new Jersey Transit told nj. Com the agency has received about a dozen complaints about the smell on board the trains. Well keep you posted on what progress officials are making to remove that smell. Lawmakers in ohio are considering whether to legalize a Funeral Directors alternative to burial and cremation. A bill was introduced for the process known as aquamation which uses chemicals and eat to dissolve remains. Its better for the environment.
