The roads this time tomorrow could be different than what we are seeing right now. They are dry for the most part with residual salt on the roadways. Theres an overturned vehicle on kelly drive in philadelphia that we are following. This happened not long ago at lemon hill drive. Traffic is able to get by that vehicle. Taking a live look at the roads right now, this is at 476 at the 76 interchange. Very few cars on the road at this Early Morning hour headed up to the pocanos and the Lehigh Valley. Things are looking good with no issues to report there. There is some construction that is closing a road in Montgomery County. This is in elkins Park Township line road is closed between cedar road and route 611. And taking a look at the drive times between 95 and naamans road and the blue route, seven minutes in both directions. Road crews across the region are ready to roll for whatever the weather brings this weekend. Penndot says they have prepared to put more than 330 trucks and plows to work. Salt and brine trucks for the freezing rain and sleet that may come plows for the snow. And the agency says it will bring in additional contractors depending on what the weather brings. Several cars caught fire there and one of the fires spread to a house. Jesse gary is live on the scene. Jesse, what can you tell us about this . Tracy, just within the past couple of minutes the fire marshall left this scene and headed over to the scene that the first fire scene proceeded that. We have video to show you first. This is over at robins avenue. That was a car fire that started there around 1 00. And that neighborhood that car was severely damaged. An hour after that come back live we are here in the 6300 block of didmond and this suv, a mercury mariner, went up in flames and the flames reached up to the secondbloorfloor bedroom of this house. The family inside was a i believe to get out thanks to a neighbor, but the flames burned the exterior of the secondfloor bedroom. Firefighters say theres an asbestos exterior to keep the fire from getting inside. Now the investigation is into whether these two fires are connected and if so who intentionally set them. About three hours ago the deadline passed to pay isis a ransom for the lives of the two japanese hostages. The militants threatened to kill the two men unless they received 200 million from the japanese government. Now the deadline passed just before 1 00 this morning our time. Last night the mother of one of the hostages made a lastminute appeal to japans government for her sons rescue. Her sons life. We dont know if anything has been worked out. Were monitoring the situation for any word on the fate of the hostages. Happening today, a judge in northeastern pennsylvania will hold a hearing on the Surveillance Video in the eric frein case. Authorities charged frein with shooting two state troopers back in september killing one of them. A 48day manhunt in the pocanos led to freins arrest. Prosecutors want to seal the Surveillance Video taken at the scene of the gunfire. They show the image at frein preliminary hearing but they want this sealed out of respect for the victims families. This morning an officer is free on bail accused of hiding his girlfriend who was wanted for murder. The philadelphia attorney announced a grand jury indictment against ronald duff. His exgirlfriend erika sanchez, stabbed and killed her exhusband and called dubb who immediately went to the scene, moved her car, drove sanchez to new york paid for a motel room to avoid being caught by his colleagues. He did everything he could to lie to other members of the homicide unit to find out what they knew. He financed her flight. He would drive to new york and come back. Sometimes you let your heart make decisions that your mind aught to make. And i think what he thought he was doing was protecting her. And protecting her best interest. Dubb is charged with on instruction, tampering with evidence and conspiracy. Some big cuts to close an even bigger gap. The local School District looking to cut hundreds of jobs. Com the district may have to slash up to 350 jobs and possibly close an elementary school. The district faces a projected 19 million budget shortfall for the school year starting next september. The superintendent says they wont make decisions until the budget is finalized in march. About 100 fifth and sixth graders will attend a Different School in the fall. The school board voted last night to move the grades out of rice Town Elementary School at the end of the school year. The students will be moved to newtown elementary to give ricetown enough space inside its building to get rid of modular classrooms. And you can get your dog or cat protected from rabies free. In the hourbyhour forecast well show the clouds move in at 4 00 this afternoon. The high clouds start to move into the wilmington area. And then the takeover during the evening hours, dry at 8 00 but that quickly changes by 10 00 with the snow falling in philadelphia and points to the south that is accumulating snow in delaware south jersey and some of the western suburbs. Chester county into Lancaster County and moving into, buts county thats at 10 00 tonight. It continues to spread into the area and accumulating snow at midnight. But notice at midnight the rain to the south has warmer air that this noreaster is going to deliver. And thats going to change snow to sleet, freezing rain and then rain. So a brief period of the sleet and freezing rain. And then the snow will continue north and west into the later morning hours. It will be a fast mover but its going to come through our area. And i have a broken nose and a black eye. And she might need surgery according to shay. Police are checking security cameras to track down her attacker. And a famous cold case involving a new jersey student is now getting a new look from a group in philadelphia. Someone murdered Tammy Zywicki 23 years ago. The new jersey native was heading back to college in iowa but never arrived. She was found stabbed to death on the side of a highway in missouri. This morning in north jersey more than 1,000 people remain homeless following the huge fire in Bergen County that Authorities Say was accidental. Investigators determined workers doing plumbing repairs started the fire at the luxury apartment complex in edgewater. We first showed you the flames wednesday night at 11 00. The fire was destructive but not deadly. Fire Officials Say it was a cheap construction to allow the fire to spread so quickly. At 4 47 this morning, theres a new leader to guide Atlantic City through the tough economic times. Governor Chris Christie yesterday appointed an Emergency Management team during his third summit on Atlantic Citys future. Christie is trying to turn around the struggling resort town. The governor names Corporate Finance consultant kevin laiden as emergency manager. Critics say this move results to the takeover of Atlantic City. Many are relying on sports gambling to save atlantic stip. Congressman frank lavone reintroduced a bill to allow sports wagering to crack down on crime. In 2011 new jersey voters approved this but losses by the Sports League delayed it. Now lawmakers in delaware want to give them another taxpayer bailout. Yesterday a group of legislators voted in favor of the 46 million plan. Jack markel is against the bailout. The three casinos are struggling because of competition in neighbors states. Theres a new push to draw visitors to Montgomery County. Its called make it monko campaign to promote the area as a winter destination. It will promote their attractions including the national park. Speaking of our area bridges yesterday at this time there were some speed restrictions because of weather. But everything is looking great. The ben, the betty, the walt the Commodore Barry bridge and the Memorial Bridge all speed restrictions have lifted. Moving into delaware route 13 near townsend boulevard, quiet intersection. But yesterday there was a speed restriction on 495 for delaware drivers because of weather, but theres no moisture on the roadways. Maybe a little leftover salt but youre good to go. The mexican drug trade found a new way to fondle Illegal Drugs into the u. S. With unsuspecting travelers. Drug smugglers are putting containers with powerful magnets underneath cars that are heading over the border in the trusted travel lane. They secretly retrieve the cargo once it passes customs.
