Fire Officials Say the flames started around 6 30 this morning. First responders arrived minutes later as some residents were already jumping to safety or scrambling out the door. I look out my front window and i see smoke over my head and people yelling theres a fire throw the baby out the window. Daniel rodriguez escaped with only shorts and sneakers. He ran back inside his apartment to pull out his girlfriend and pet. Fire Officials Say one man died after jumping from a secondfloor window before rescuers arrived. They actually were able to 4s[ ws. In mercy county investigators are looking into the cause of an overnight fire in an apartment complex. Look at these flames. See how intense they are. It just engulfs this building. Neighbors say they couldnt believe what happened. We were sleeping about 2 30 in the morning and i heard a lady screaming help help help. I got my clothes on and came out and i saw a cop running in front of the building. All of a sudden i saw the fire started in the beginning building here and then it just then we just heard the windows popping, popping, and then the whole roof went up in flames. Two people were hurt in this fire. Eight homes were damaged. Eight homes completely destroyed. Now, your nbc 10 first alert weather. After a foggy start, visibility has improved this morning. Weve only had 0. 03 of an inch of rain this month. When you have such a dry ground the fire danger goes up the pollen goes up. Weve only had 0. 03 in a 19day period which is ridiculous. Nothing more than a couple sprinkles in southern delaware. The remnants of ana staying pretty far to the south. Just grazing southern delaware perhaps with a few showers. Temperatures are generally in the 70s. 79 in allentown. Thats one of the warm spots. Georgetown, delaware 78. Extremely humid in a good bit of the area. So the temperatures go up into the mid80s today. Just a chance of a shower in a couple spots, especially from philly southward and then the humidity continues tonight. Fog redevelops tomorrow. Emergency management Officials Say about 30 of the city suffered damage. You walk through, and i dont know the people you were with, you know, a couple days ago dont have homes anymore. You know its just really sad to see, really breathtaking. Local American Red Cross has opened up a shelter for any residents needing assistance. Tornadoes werent the only type of Severe Weather in texas this weekend. The state also had to deal with severe flooding. The National Guard was called in to rescue people in krum after days of rain led to high waters. One family described the scary moments as they were being airlifted out with a 5monthold baby. Dropped the baby within 30 minutes after she left we have 3 foot of water in the front yard. I was scared and trying to come down here to get her w all the roads being blocked off, it was pretty scary. Most families in the area wont be able to return home until later today when they will get a better idea of just how much damage was caused by the flooding. And in iowa more than 100 people were at a High School Awards Ceremony when a tornado ripped through their town. Everyone took cover in the became when School Officials found out that the storm was coming. Most of the schools roof is gone. Firefighters and First Responders accounted for everyone by going door to door. No one there was injured. And Philadelphia Police are looking for the suspect who they say hit a man on his head with a bottle. The victim suffered injuries after the incident inside darlings diner inmuq their northeast philadelphia home. Police arrested the suspect after they say he entered the home along duncan street in frankford. The man was armed with a weapon when the homeowners chased him out. No one there was hurt. Four people are in custody after a street fight escalates into shots being fired. A neighbor recorded this video showing a crowd of about 30 adults. There were even children outside when the men and women used bats to settle a dispute, but the fight quickly escalated when a man pulled out a gun and fired off six rounds. No one was hit but one of the bullets hit a neighbors home. The neighborhood has definitely come down but for it to actually affect my house directly, its very scary because someone could have been in there. It hit the steps where up and down, people are constantly going. It was definitely frightening. Police are looking forred gunman. The person recording the video also got involved. The crowd ultimately turned and attacked the woman to end the recording. A deadly bicycle crash from over the weekend involving a philadelphia filmmaker remains under investigation. Investigators say 26yearold temple grad jay mohan was leaving the movie was his girlfriend when his bicycle collided with a car at the intersection of ridge and girard avenues. He was rushed to Hahnemann University hospital where he died nearly three hours later. A music rehearsal overseas takes a scary and dangerous turn. Police say officer dean stopped the car for speeding saturday night when tate arrived to back him up shots rang out. Both officers were hit and the suspects took off in one of the police cruisers. Following a manhunt did you do it . I didnt do it. Police arrested curtis banks and charged him with being an accessory. A fourth suspect, Cornelius Clark was later charged with obstruction of justice. The shooting comes as police around the country are on edge. Thousands turning out to mourn a fallen nypd officer on friday. According to the National Law EnforcementMemorial Fund the number of officers ambushed and killed last year was three times higher than the year before. But hattiesburgs mayor says he does not think dean and tate were targeted. I think we had Police Officers in the wrong place at the wrong time. People who came out for the rally for peace were encouraged to wear the color gray in honor of freddie gray. It set off protests in the city. Prince recently released a protest song titled baltimore which addresses the unrest in the city and around the country after a series of deadly policeinvolved shootings. I think he can bring the people together. Proceeds from the show will go to baltimore based youth charities. Meanwhile, a new report from baltimore says thousands of prisoners needed medical attention and were turned away from a city jail. According to the baltimore sun, between june 2012 and april of this year Correctional Officers refused to admit nearly 2,600 detainees. Baltimore police are under scrutiny for their treatment of detainees following the death of freddie gray last month. And testimony now in the colorado Movie Theater shooting trial. James holms is facing 166 charges of murder and other offenses. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Holmes faces a Death Penalty in connection to the shooting. The trial is now in its third week and is expected to last four to five months. And the cleanup process is under way in nepal today. 16 days after a massive earthquake killed thousands. Government Officials Say the cost of the first phase of reconstruction will be 2 billion. Nearly 8,000 people were killed and more than half a million buildings are damaged or flattened. And today a group of volunteers from delaware is expected to return home after being in the quake zone. The Delaware Medical Relief Team has been in the country since last week. They tweeted photos of their doctors treating people in need. Its going to be hot and humid if not today, then tomorrow. The temperatures actually going higher. That creates some pollen problems. Of course, the ground being dry, that doesnt help. The fire threat goes up. But we are going to be seeing a big cooldown and also its going to get much more comfortable in the humidity department as the week goes on. We have a fair amount of clouds and some sunshine. 77 degrees. The wind is fairly light. Its five degrees warmer than it was at this time yesterday. And the pollen well it just keeps being on the high side. If anything its just going to get higher as we go to wednesday. Perhaps dropping a little bit later on during the week. But thats still pretty high even through friday. The temperatures not quite high yet because of the fog that was around this morning, but as the sun comes out, those temperatures are going to go up. 79 in allentown and reading. Those are the warm spots right now, and those areas will get well into the 80s more like upper 80s in some spots. Its not going to be the case at the shore. With the wind coming in off that ocean, 65 in avalon. 70 in beach haven. Its warmer than it was last week. The ocean is warming up itself. This is some of the remnants of it, and were just on the Northern Edge in southern delaware at least, but this storm is going to be continuing to move pretty much out to sea, and were going get very little if any, precipitation from it as we were suggesting to you last week. Now, as we go through the afternoon, were in the mid80s. Obviously cooler at the shore. But watch the temperatures the wind direction, straight out of the south, and so its going to be another cloudy muggy night with fog, especially toward the shore and in southern delaware and tomorrow morning look how warm that is. Near 70 degrees at the start of the day tomorrow. So we could get up close to 90 degrees, but where is the rain . You need more than heat and humidity to produce rain and were not really seeing it. Now, the wind shifts a little bit tomorrow afternoon, so as the temperature goes up the atmosphere gets drier, and so very little chance of afternoon showers, even with that heat tomorrow, and then it really gets cooler. By wednesday morning were in the 50s. Remember, were 70 tomorrow morning. So that is quite a change. Much more comfortable air is on the way. In the meantime we dont get much rain if anything. Just a chance of an afternoon thunderstorm and in a couple of spots. Maybe a few showers in southern delaware but most of us probably not seeing any today. I will say up front we just talked to the property owner, but residents are telling me that there is no they buttress what the fire commissioner said no working fire aarms or smoke detectors. One woman said she pays rent she has no electricity, no running water, and a stove that does not work. She confirmed what the commissioner said about the lack of working smoke detectors and a smoke alarm. I just talked to the property owner. Hes down and wearing a red shirt and eagles cap. He denies all of that. He says no comment to it. Take a look at the video. The lone fatality happened when a man tried to escape the flames by jumping from the second floor window. Neighbors say he landed on his head. Fire Officials Say he had no vital sign whence he was rushed to a hospital. He was pronounced dead there. Six people including one child suffered injuries when the flames started on the ground floor of 3246 and traveled up to the other units. The fire commissioner said the loss of life was preventable. We also need our homeowners or our landlords to do the right thing also and have an alarm system. That alarm system is very important to make sure that people get out safely. Reporter we also had one pet that suffered exposure to smoke and fumes, needed assistance from the police. Red cross says theyre caring for nine people displaced by this or nine families displaced but theyre taking care of six people providing temporary housing. Again, residents saying that this is basically not surprised there was a fire and this is basically a trap with no running water, no electricity, et cetera. I talked to the owner right over my shoulder. He denies it. When i told him the Fire Department even confirmed no working smoke detectors or fire alarms, he said no comment. A state monitor will present a proposed School Budget to board members. The district is expected to lose more than 200 fulltime positions as a result of cuts. More than 100 other Atlantic City workers and about onethird of the citys firefighters are also on the chopping block. Those layoffs could go into effect by the end of next month. A report by the nbc 10 investigators show a dwindling number of rollvolunteer firefighters in the state of pennsylvania. The state fire commissioner says 20 years ago there were six volunteer firefighters for every one today. The departments that nbc 10 talked with said younger people arent signing up because it takes a long time to become a firefighter. Volunteers face 180 hours of training that they have to pay for themselves. The fire commissioner said with fewer volunteers theres more concern for public safety. Well, you know it means that sometimes when the whistle blows or the tones drop or the call goes out for help it may go unanswered. The nbc 10 investigators found seven states addressing the issue of fewer volunteers including delaware, which encourages volunteer firefighters with tax breaks. In pennsylvania tax breaks for volunteer firefighters disappeared six years ago. But the chairman of the states Emergency Services committee wants to reward volunteer firefighters for their service by paying for college, something similar to the military gi bill. The Lupus Foundation of america says threequarters of those most at risk for lupus know little or nothing about the disease. Tell us about lupus. Most people have heard of the word but dont know what it is. Its an auto immune disease. We all have an immune system and when someone gets lupus, the body makes antibodies but there isnt anything to protect you against and so those antibodies attack yourself. They result in inflammation and that inflammation can damage or destroy our ravage as you said any organ or system of the body the heart, lungs, brain, the kidneys, the blood, the skin the joints. part of our bodies is a potential target. Who are most at risk and then what are some of the symptoms . Sure. 90 of lupus cases are women and most of those women are in their child bearing years. So that tells us theres a hormonal connection to the disease. Women ever color are also affected three to four times more aven and more often with more more moderate to severe disease like kidney failure, kidney involvement. The signs and symptoms of lupus appear to be benign and mild fatigue, skin rashes joint pain. Kind of like having the flu but it doesnt go away. That could be an indication thats something going on inside the body. Its funny you mentioned those at risk. I mentioned to you before we started this interview i knew someone that has lupus and you named that person. Its an africanamerican female friend of ours my wife and i, that has lupus. Tell me how the disease can be treated. So there are medications that can kind of dial back the immune system so that it does not cause any permanent or irreversible damage and then depending what organ or system is involved in the lupus, there are medications to try to suppress those symptoms. Weve had summerlike humidity the last two or three days that helped to lead to the fog in the morning and the bad hair days that some of you im sure are experiencing. Its going to be hot and kind of humidity tomorrow as well. All this dry air leads to the pollution and pollen problems and the allergy sufferers are really having a rough time because we havent gotten the rain to knock the pollen out of the air. A big cooldown on the way. For those of you who think its too hot. The phillies are playing home this week. The ball is going to be able to really fly tonight because of the warmth and the high humidity. Those are ideal conditions for the ball to fly out. 77 degrees, the wind south at 6 miles an hour. That also is blowing out towards center field for the phillies. Temperatures in the mid to upper 70s right now. Were certainly going to get into the 80s and with the high humidity its going to feel even warmer than that. 76 degrees Atlantic City international and it is not going to be quite as warm right at the beaches because we have that light southerly wind. 66 in avalon 77 in lewis, 71 in beach haven. Not quite as cold as it was last week. We had just a couple showers around tiny little showers in kent county. One that may be moving toward the western side of dover, and the other one getting perhaps up as far as New Castle County but most of the remnants from ana are still way to the south, not very organized, and not very impressive. The temperature pretty impressive for this time of year. The average high is 72. So were way above that today. Were way above that tomorrow. And then a front comes through and shifts our winds, but we just dont expect rain with that front. For today just a chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Most places will stay dry. Highs in the low to mid80s. It will feel higher than that because of the high humidity. Tomorrow the humidity is highest actually in the morning, but its going to get relatively hot. Near 90 degrees, probably no rain tomorrow. And then look at the temperature drop for wednesday. Humidity drops, too. Plus the wind. Its going to feel like a totally different kind of day. And then its fairly comfortable thursday and friday before our best chance of showers comes over the weekend. Yeah, im married. Does it matter . Youd do that for me . Really . Yeah, id like that. This happened on south newkirk street a few minutes ago. The officer did get out of that van. Skyforce 10 saw a Police Officer on a stretcher and wearing a neck brace. We just learned south newkirk street will be closed for a while as Police Investigate this accident. Were sending a crew on the ground and well have updates on neutral zone and nbc10. Temperatures into the mid80s today. Just a slight chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Best chance would be in delaware. Then its hot tomorrow 90 but no rain and no rain for the rest of the week either. So we need it. Those pollen issues are going to be with us all week long and the best chance of any kind of rain is not until next weged. Ekend. The phillies will be having nice weather conditions for this week. Because of the heat and humidity, the ball will travel a whole lot better today probably than any other day this week.
