That rippled through the Democratic Community here in city hall nbc 10 spoke with Council President Darrell Clarke just a short while ago. This is a good day for philadelphia. Were landing some significant events in the city of philadelphia because people know that we know how to do it right. Reporter now, according to congressman bob brady, it is not a done deal just yet. There are contracts that have to be signed and when you mention contracts, you think of labor and unions. That was a big issue back when the Republican National convention was here in philadelphia back in 2000. But according to congressman brady, all of those issues have been ironed out. The unions affiliated with the Wells Fargo Center where the bulk of the convention will be held, all of those unions are signatories to the contract. It appears as though aleast now with all the euphoria there arent too many wrinkles to be dealt with. Doug shimell, nbc 10 news. There will be a swarm of political leaders, policymakers and media. Nbc 10s chris cato joins us live from our Digital Operations Center with a look at the impact the convention will have on the city. About 15 feet to my left jeff shapiro is standing over here. Well hear from him in a moment. What theyll tell you this is going to mean a lot of jobs and a lot of money. A lot of money spent by new visitors to philadelphia. Were talking about an estimated 30 to 35,000 people coming to town staying here for five or six nights eating at restaurants. That will mean a big win fall for a lot of businesses including hotels and the businesses that support them. Recent conventions and other cities have resulted in anywhere from 150 million, 250 million in Economic Impact and according to the Pennsylvania Convention center authority, the convention will create jobs in construction and other services. Now, these arent permanent jobs but should last for more than a year leading up to the convention. A boone for the area. When the Republican National convention was held here in 2000 it produced more than 100,000 room nights at area hotels during the entire duration of the convention and generated almost 90 million in total Economic Impact. That convention was held in what is now the Wells Fargo Center prior to the expansion of the convention center. But this will be philadelphias first time hosting the democrats. Lets wind back the clock to 1948. We doug this video out of the archives. Philly hosting the dnc at Convention Hall in university city. The demmes nominated hair arye ry edd harry truman. Media playing a huge role in it even then. Philadelphia should be well broken in for hosting an event the size of the dnc. Thats because, of course the world meeting of families being held here this september, with a visit from pope francis on the schedule. As many as 2 Million People may cram into the philadelphia area for that. So certainly Police Security infrastructure, all of that will be in place, well before september when the world meeting of families happens. I feel great i have the opportunity to show up for our great city our great restaurants, our great Tourist Attractions and it is going to be a great time a good time and an economic boost for the city of philadelphia. Lets talk about that congressman brady. Tell us exactly how you feel this will impact not just the city of philadelphia, but surrounding areas. It is going to impact not only the city but our neighboring towns, our neighboring Delaware County Montgomery County. They were all part of this. We put a meeting together two years ago with shapiro and david landau and put Business People together, elected officials together and got the okay from them to keep on pushing this thing. And the most important part about it is that one day i missed her, i hugged the chief of staff. She was in the corner and got the okay from the other powers that be and here we are. Now we got this convention. It will be great for the city great for the town and im looking really forward to showcasing our great city. Congressman, let me take you back a little bit. Were down were finalists along with new york and ohio. Columbus ohio. Were you surprised at all or did you expect the city would be awarded the convention . I just thought we had the best show we could put on for the democrats our democratic nominee for president. They love this they love the logistics, they love the location amazing large parking lot that they could do a lot of tailgating and the proximity to the event right down through broad street. The hotels easy to get to restaurants easy to get to. Airport, easy to get to to the site. And they just like the logistical part about it. And not only they love our town, we showed them a good time and they came here with the site committee. Every one of them are in washington with me, and for the last week they kept telling me they all gained ten pounds and we fed them real well. Everywhere we went on the bus, we had cheesesteaks and pretzels. They loved us and the proof of it is that they picked eded us. Were talking to congressman bob brady who said cheesesteaks and pretzels did it in addition to some hugs. Hugs work. Thank you very much for your time. Thank you. Congratulations. Thank you. We appreciate your time. Thank you. Governors office is also pleased with the dncs decision in a statement. Tom wolf said quote, todays announcement is tremendous news for the commonwealth of pennsylvania. The birth place of our democracy will host the democratic National Convention in 2016 which will generate hundreds of millions of dollars in Economic Activity in the state. We look forward to working with local leaders to ensure that philadelphia will shine in the national spotlight. We also received this statement from senator bob caseys office. He said im delighted that philadelphia will host the 2016 democratic National Convention there is no better place to underscore the principles of the Democratic Party than the birth place of america. I look forward to making history again in philadelphia. Well, city has worked for more than a year to bring the convention to philadelphia. Were joined live now by one of the people who worked to bring it here josh shapiro. Hes on the Planning Committee for philadelphias dnc bid. Congratulations and, again, tell me how this feels. Thanks vai. It feels great. It is a great day for philadelphia. Great day for our region. And it shows that when we work together, great things can happen for us. Josh who gets the credit for in your opinion who gets the credit for the convention coming here . Vai, victory has got a thousand fathers and mothers. A handful of us met around a conference table at the union league in a meeting coordinated by congressman bob brady who you heard from on the phone, nearly two years ago. As we went forward, more and more people joined our efforts. Republicans, democrats, people from the city people from out in the suburbs, where im from in Montgomery County, donors everybody stepped up and made our bid strong. So a lot of people deserve a lot of credit. The most important thing is we won, philly is the capital of democracy, the birth place of democracy. In 2016 we get to show that off. Josh were five six months away from the convention what work still needs to be done to get ready up and have the city up to speed for all the things that have been promised. Were a year and a half away. We have a ton of work to do. We have to get our infrastructure ready. We have more dollars to raise. We have to coordinate the logistics of this. It is going to be a total team effort. Business and labor, people from the city people from the suburbs, chris talked before about the immense pressure there is going to be on our restaurants and hotels and our arts and cultural sites in the city and in the suburbs. We will be ready. We will showcase our region. And it is going to be a tremendous opportunity for all of us. Democrats, republicans, everybody. I got so excited i was thinking already it is going to be this summer it is a summer and a half away. So our Transportation System are they up to speed to handle the influx of people that will be coming in here next summer . No question. Look, one of the things that sold the philadelphia region to the dnc is our infrastructure. From the amazing Pennsylvania Convention center where im privileged to serve as the vice chairman to the Wells Fargo Center, to our infrastructure roads and bridges, septa, our hotels, we have got it all. People can come here they can enjoy their experience and having been to many conventions on the democratic side i know my friends on the republican side having been to their conventions can say the same. You go to a city that is not prepared and doesnt have the infrastructure, it takes away from the delegate experience. We will, i think, upgrade the delegate experience here in the philadelphia region and it is just going to be a tremendous time and a great opportunity for all of us. Josh shapiro on the dnc Planning Committee, certainly appreciate it. We thank you for your time. Thank you. So those things arent forgotten when the Democratic National committee hands out big economic plums like the july 2016 convention. Now, the head of the Democratic National committee, debbie Wasserman Schultz met with president barack obama last night according to congressman bob brady. Once Wasserman Schultz answered those questions, president barack obama said go with philly. Nbc 10 spoke to mayor Michael Nutter this morning and what happened last night got relayed to him in a call this morning.
