Charges could be filed today in the case of the offduty Darby Borough Police officer who was shot and killed inside his home. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live in Darby Township where the officer lives. Jesse, tell us more about the investigation. Reporter rosemary ive just been in touch with officials here at the township. They say the chief is due back here around 10 00 this morning. We hope to get more from him. At that point, weve also been in contact with the chief over at the Bureau Police department. And he says he will be working and in Constant Contact with the township chief during the all day today, as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are still withholding the identity of the 26yearold victim until all of the family members are notified but were told that he was shot yesterday, once in the chest, in the secondfloor bedroom inside his home on magnolia avenue. Medics rushed him over to penn presbyterian, but he died because of the gunshot wound. Neighbors say police had been called to the home before due to domestic dmutisputes with his girlfriend. And is a woman inside the home was interviewed overnight. This loss acutely felt by the people who served with the fallen officer. He was a shining star in the department. He was an eveneveryonetempered, nice guy. Anybody that met him, he always had a good word for them. He knew how to talk to people and handle people. Reporter praised the work ethic of the fallen officer and said the officer worked parttime for four years for him, but he planned to see him if he could get him on fulltime as soon as a position opened up. A philadelphia Police Officer has been suspended from the force after investigators say he was driving drunk on the job. This morning officer Darryl Cathey is facing dui charges. Hes also accused of assault and reckless endangerment. Authorities say cathey was driving a marked cruiser with three flat tires and bent rims in southwest philadelphia. According to investigators, he had bloodshot eyes and smelled like alcohol. A sergeant and other officers say, as they took cathey into custody, a struggle broke out. Police commissioner Charles Ramsey sell tells us he plans to dismiss the officer from the department. This is not the first time cathey that be in trouble with the force. In 2011 he was dismissed after assaulting an exgirlfriend and he won his job back in 2013 through arbitration. New from overnight in philadelphia, a man is in stable condition after someone stabbed him in the head. It happened inside a house on west erie avenue in the hunting park section of the city. Right now police are looking for the attacker but they have not indicated what led up to the stabbing. Also new from overnight, investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire at a north philadelphia bakery. Crews were called to the scene on north 22nd street around 2 30 this morning. They tell us the fire started in the basement of denises delicacies. Fortunately, the flames did not spread to the apartments above and nobody was hurt. For a second day, a warehouse fire in north philadelphia is impacting some commuters. We brought this to you as breaking news yesterday morning. The fire started in a vacant warehouse on westmoreland street around 2 00 a. M. Yesterday. It took crews more than four hours to get it under control. Thats because nearby septa tracks made it difficult for firefighters to maneuver and attack the flames. Septa suspended service on the Manayunk NorristownRegional Rail line this week. Septa tells us a wall of the warehouse right next to the tracks is unsafe and must be demolished before service can resume. Firefighters put out hot spots at the building all day yesterday and even into this morning. The fire marshal will now determine what caused the blaze once the interior of the building has cooled off. It is unclear when a north philadelphia Animal Shelter will reopen its Adoption Center because some of the pets are sick. The pennsylvania spca on erie avenue says the number of dogs have a upper respiratory illness. The cats is are all healthy. The Wellness Clinic grooming and surgery are all open but the Adoption Center has been closed for more than two weeks. Still, the pspca says it will take part in an offsite adoption event at the Northeast Shopping Center on roosevelt boulevard. You can check out healthy, adoptable dogs and cats from noon until 4 00. We have new information this morning about boston Police Officer who was shot. Officer John Moynihan is in a medically induced coma after a suspect opened fire during a traffic stop striking him in the face. Police shot and killed that suspect. Last year moynihan received the departments medal of honor for helping another officer during the shootout with the Boston Marathon bombers. He also served as an army ranger during the iraq war. We also have new information about the explosion that levelled three apartment buildings in new york. Back in august it turns out utility workers found the restaurants gas line was tapped and there were several leaks. Service was shut down at the end of the summer while crews made repairs. Now investigators want to know if thursdays explosion was because of a similar gas theft scheme. Meanwhile, two people are still missing. In los angeles, authorities are investigating the cause of a commuter train crash. The train slammed into a car at a crossing near the university of Southern California yesterday. The driver and the trains operator were both seriously hurt although the operators condition has improved. 19 passengers on the train suffered minor injuries. Investigators say it appears the driver of the car did not see the train and tried to cross the tracks. In just the last hour and a half, weve received new information in the investigation of the germanwings plane crash. Heres what we know. A german newspaper is reporting that police have found evidence that copilot Andreas Lubitz suffered from a psychotic illness, a psychosomatic illness. The newspaper says investigators found several medications prescribed for a psychological illness in lubitz apartment. Nbc news has not been able to confirm this report. Investigators have said that lubitz intentionally crashed the plane in the french alps earlier this week killing all 150 people onboard. Meanwhile, the New York Times is quoting a source as saying that lubitz was examined for vision problems that could have affected his ability to remain a pilot. Lufthansa told nbc news that the airline had no knowledge of his medical issues. More family members arrived in france carrying flowers and attended a memorial near a site where the plane went down. An airport in halifax, nova scotia says its thankful no one was hurt when a plenty widget right off the runway this morning. According to a spokesman, the air canada jet touched down hard in stormy conditions. We were in shock. All youre doing i was right on the exit row, so i grabbed the door, flipped it open threw it out. Everyone got out really really quick. We were running away from the plane, because there was fuel everywhere. Officials now say 25 people were hurt but their injuries are minor. Power at the airport was briefly knocked out. And we had one firefighter come over and tell us that this is really just impacting the firefighters in this area. A tremendous loss. Theyre wondering if and when someone will be charged. No one arrested at this point, and no charges filed, but that could be change kdd by the afternoon. Authorities are holding the identity of the 26yearold victim until all his family members are notified. He died due to gunshot wounds. Neighbors say police have been called to the home before due to domestic disputes with his girlfriend and that the woman that was questioned overnight by investigators is his girlfriend. She is not in custody right now. The Township Police commissioner says this death, though hits close to home. Its like we lost a member of our family needlessly. And theres not a lot more we can say until the investigation is completed and we find out exactly what went on. And we are waiting for the chief to arrive here at the township, in about 30 minutes or so, to try to get more information about the investigation and if and when charges will be filed. Police were called to the familys house on reynolds street on friday morning. At first, 19yearold Zachary Pritchett told officers that intruders has stabbed his family members, but investigators say they determined that pritchett was the attacker. And just ahead of next weekends final four in indianapolis the ncaa says its concerned about how the law could affect student athletes and employees. I think its absolutely going back to the dark ages. This bill is not about discrimination. And if i thought it legalized discrimination in any way, i would have vetoed it. Indianas governor said lawmakers could send him a bill to clarify the intent of the new bill this week. In a recent interview, he said he would look at it but hes not going to change the law. A new plaque was unveiled paying tribute to the bravery of donald elshire, john holmes and william wurst. Shes so proud that you are part of what this is and everybody and all the trouble they went to make a special day for us. Officers elshire and wurst died that day and officer holmes was paralyzed and died 17 years later from complications related to his injury. The memory of a fallen Pennsylvania State trooper will live on after a Community Pays tribute to the man killed in an ambush. Theyre nameing a street after him. Corporal Bryon Dickson died last year after eric frein shot him is and another officer outside of barracks. Yesterday, officials held a ceremony for dickson. They unveiled a street sign niz honor. Trooper alex douglas who was wounded in the shooting made his first public remarks since the deadly ambush during the ceremony. He said he is still recovering, but hopes to return to the force. This weekend, countries all over the world are turning off their lights to mark earth hour. Its a campaign to raise awareness about climate change. In paris, the eiffel tower went dark for five minutes. And in italy, dozens gathered to watch the lights of st. Peters basilica to go out. More than 7,000 similar events were held worldwide.
