Nbc 10s Monique Braxton is live in conshohocken, where firefighters have made some progress. Monique . Reporter thats right. And just moments ago, i did touch base again with the plymouth fire chief and he told us that he would say its contained but definitely not under control. Now, the chief also tells us this blaze has gutted both the american flooring and syntaxinyntax blind companies, two unoccupied companies in this building. Heavy equipment is on the way, were being told to take the building down. Looking at daylight its giving us a better idea of what firefighters are dealing with. The fire chief has concerned multiple explosions as the blaze grew to threealarm. The chief also says flooring products inside contain petroleum and are extremely flammable. Right now, theyre working with the department of Environmental Protection regarding the runoff of water. At this point, we believe we have a variety of chemicals that were used thats used in the flooring business that were involved in this fire. We do have some issue with potential runoff that the Montgomery Team has and are assisting inging us with rectifying that situation. When we arrived about four hours ago, as many as six Ladder Companies were fiercely attacking the fire from above. 100 firefighters responded from several neighboring locations. Given the chemicals in the flooring and the dark smoke, we asked about dangers regarding air quality and water. And we were told that neighbors should rest assure that theyre okay not in any danger. The chief also told us theres no danger to anyone regarding the power and gas that has been turned off while they battle the blaze. But as you can see, thick smoke continues to billow over the communities of plymouth meeting, plymouth township as well as conshohocken. People who live close by have been coming to the scene. Many of them tell us they are relatives of the firefighters is and live in some of the neighboring communities. Our coverage will continue at 9 00. Live for now from conshohocken Monique Braxton, nbc 10 news. Thanks monique. From our Jersey Shore Bureau investigators there are looking into a fire that gutted a popular boardwalk shop just one week before the unofficial start of summer. Flames ripped through the seventh street surf shop in ocean city last night. We first told you about this fire through a push alert on our nbc 10 news app. The blaze broke out around 8 00. Crews had it out in less than an hour. One worker managed to escape safely. Ive been a part of this place for 10 or 11 years now and worked here every summer so its tough to see. The hard part with boardwalk businesses right now, theyre all loading up for the holiday weekend, so theres a lot of merchandise in there thats obvious destroyed at this point, but also fuels the fire. Firefighters say neighboring businesses sustained some smoke damage. Employees tell us that the surf shop will reopen. Amtrak crews are coming off another night of work to restore service between philadelphia and new york by tuesday, which would be one week after the deadly derailment in port richmond. The new timeline came on the same day officials with the federal Railroad Administration ordered amtrak to make immediate changes. The first is for amtrak to put the automated train control system or atc, into effect for northbound trains approaching the frankford curve. Thats where train 188 derailed. The system helps control a trains speed. It can stop a speeding train. Second, the feds want amtrak to assess the risk on curves along the entire northeast corridor from washington to boston. Also amtrak must increase the number of speed limit signs on the tracks. Amtrak says it will abide by the immediate order. Passengers tell us it will make them feel safer. I think its essential. I think it should have been there. I think anything that would stop an accident like this would be great. The nbc 10 investigators have learned that the Hightech System for stopping a train, automatic train control, or atc, has long been installed on southbound tracks coming from new york but a decision was made not to install it on the northbound side. That of course is going to change because of this order. Ntsb officials have said if atc had been installed, it would have prevented the deadly derailment. The broken corridor thats what some are calling amtraks northeast rail system. Stations along the corridor the tracks handle 2,000 trains every day. But the railway is decaying with trains lumbering through tunnels and across bridges that are more than a century old. Even the electrical grid that powers the trains dates back to the great depression. By one estimate it would take more than 20 billion just to replace parts that have already outlasted their intended usage. In the meantime in terms of the investigation, heres what we know. The fbi is still looking at the cracked windshield of the amtrak engine. A big question is did a flying object hit the windshield just before it derailed tuesday night . What affect did that have . We do know that objects hit both the septa train and an amtrak acela train around the same time that night in the same area and caused window damage. Nbc news interviewed a passenger on the acela train and he says the window of his rail car shattered. We heard a loud noise in the car and immediately, i looked over and there was a the window had shattered and apparently there was a rock thrown at our car. In the meantime the ntsb says Brandon Bastian, the engineered of the derailed amtrak train, cannot remember events leading up to the crash. Bastian only remembers ringing the train bell at the old north philadelphia station. In other news today, School Officials will decide whether Lower Moreland High School will open for classes tomorrow after a truck crashed right through a wall of the building. Take a look. Winds on the calm side temperatures to the north and west, 66 in allentown, 65 in lancaster, 70 right now in philadelphia. South and east were mainly looking at the upper 60s, 68 in millville, 67 in the a Atlantic City airport, and 70 in dover, delaware. Certainly a mild start and were also looking at a little bit of fog across the area. Were seeing reduced visibilities, down to 3 miles in mt. Holly. A little worse to the north and west. Down to 2 1 2 miles in mt. Pocono. 3mile visibility in allentown and down to 4 miles in reading as well as lancaster. The rule of thumb is to use your low beams as you head out on this sunday morning in the spots where you see some fog. Mostly cloudy a little hazy this morning in philadelphia feeling very summerlike once again, like we did yesterday. We also have a little bit of shower activity off to the west. But as far as Lancaster County and also off to the east in parts of delaware and new castle county, also in parts of kent county, and extreme southern new jersey, i could see a shower or two over the next hour or so. Otherwise, everyone has a shot for seeing some showers later on today and also some thunderstorms. So by 3 00 youll see some green popping into the map, even some darker shading, indicating some heavier downpours. A lot of humidity in the air. And we had that yesterday. Where you see one of those thunderstorms, you could see some heavy downpours. Same story by 7 00. And then as we go throughout the overnight hours, were leftover with humidity. Another round of storm on tuesday, 80 degrees. And look what happens on wednesday. It will be windy, mostly sunny skies, dew points much lower, 74. By thursday temperatures right around 73. Lots of sunshine and really beautiful to kick off the memorial day weekend. Mostly sunny, nice 75 on friday and saturday 76. Next meet the press Moderator Chuck Todd joins us to talk about the deadly derailment in philadelphia. Hear what he has to say about the political aftermath of the crash. Rebuilding america. The concept is gaining urgency and traction following the deadly derailment in philadelphia. Its also the top issue on this mornings edition of nbcs meet the press. Joining us now for a preview is moderator of meet the press, chuck todd. Good morning, chuck. Good morning, rosemary. Chuck, the investigation into the amtrak derailment is ongoing. The big question it seems, is why hadnt the technology that stopped speeding trains already been installed in all tracks and what other areas, especially along the northeast corridor are at risk . Well its interesting, and we its unbelievable when you look at the map of the northeast corridor from washington to just north of baltimore, it has this positive train control, essentially, this automation thats put in from essentially new york to boston. Its been implemented. But theres a huge gap from essentially wilmington delaware, south of philadelphia all the way through new york with a small little place in new jersey. So that gap seems to be unexplained, other than now amtrak says its going to put it in. That said it still seems as if human error is the leading theory as to the cause of this derailment. And the question now is how does Congress Respond to this . Is it about helping amtrak get money faster to put in this Safety Measures or do you even see a larger debate about the future of amtrak . Chuck, i also want to talk to you about the 2016 election. Youre going to be speaking with republican president ial candidate, rand paul. He will be in philadelphia tomorrow.
