The Chester County artist who created the official logo and icon for the world meeting of families in philadelphia is unveiling some new paintings on this Easter Sunday. Nbc 10s matt delucia got a sneak preview at his studio and talked to him about what it means to have his work on display, not only for the popes visit to philadelphia but also at the vatican. My first order of business is trying to get as much territory covered as pob. Reporter the brushstrokes are countless. The size the immense. I sketched it out and transferred it up to this scale. Reporter and task well, its humbling. Certainly from someone coming from doing mostly gallery work. Reporter now neil carlin is no stranger to art, not even catholic art. Hes been painting for the church these past eight years. It became very apparent quickly that thats the kind of work that i wanted to do. Reporter a calling that came in an unusual way. Each piece is an opportunity for me to learn more about the faith that i wasnt since i wasnt raised within the faith. Reporter now his work will be seen by millions during the world meeting of families. The icon he painted last year is only public display at the basilica in center city and the vatican. It left me a little drymouthed and speechless, thinking about, you know, how many people were going to see this. Reporter with his reputation on the rise, neils latest job was for a single parish. Three paintings now at the request of one priest at the church of st. Mary in swhanksville. He wanted something that was the beginning and end of marys role in the history of salvation. One is the enunciation, the coronation of the virgin, and then our lady of angels. Reporter these three paintings, if you think they were done overnight, think again. Neil says he spent about 12 to 16 hours a day for three months to get these ready. And all of his work comes out of this windowless, Kennett Square mushroom house, that he converted into a studio. Much like his faith, now appreciated by the world. My hope with the piece is always to inspire. And obviously, since i didnt design these, my hope is to be faithful to the artist that originally did it. Reporter in Kennett Square, matt delucia, nbc 10 news. Yep, see you at 8 00. All right. Coming up this morning on nbcs meet the press, israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu will appear live with moderator chuck todd. We check in now with chuck for a preview. Good morning chuck. Good morning, rosemary. What questions do you plan to ask the Prime Minister about relations with u. S. And the proposed deal on Irans Nuclear program . Look i think we know he opposes the deal the question is how much is he going to actively oppose the deal . How much is he going to campaign against the deal and try soee it forwarded by congress which may be the only shot he has of stopping this deal going through, if he opposes it as rigorously as he does. Because the United Nations at this point is likely to go ahead and sign off on this deal. And thats whats going to make president obamas challenge that much more difficult. I think the public is skeptical of the deal. A lot of distrust of iran in general. Thats not surprising. But congress itself including democrats, can the president at least convincek n winning to see how the deal is implemented. Let the deal go into effect for six months. Its been a successful strategy for the president so far. He keeps buying time from democrats. A couple months at a time can he do it again . He never wins over their support, but delays their opposition. And chuck, this week there was plenty of controversy over the religious freedom laws in indiana and in arkansas. What did the debate reveal about the upcoming 2016 campaign and elections . I think were going to see inside the republican primary, there is a split between the business wing of the gop and the evangelical wing of the gop. The business wing views these social issue controversies as bad for business. The evangelical wing believes that the race to legalize samesex marriage has put them behind, makes them feel as if theyve been ignored. Theres plenty of president ial candidates who realize that evangelical christians make up a majority of primary voters in a lot of the early states. So youre seeing a lot of president ial candidates lean that way. But a few, like jeb bush whos thinking if im the nominee, ive got to win over these social liberals and fiscal conservatives, how do i win them over . So i think youre seeing this split play out. And i guess youre saying if theres good news for the Republican Party here its better theyre having this debate in 2015 than 2016. Chuck todd moderator of meet the press, thank you, chuck. Got it. Also ahead, the archbishop of new york joins chuck on this Easter Sunday to talk about the current state of the catholic church. It all comes your way at 10 30 right here on nbc 10.
