And im still tracking dangerous ice, as we head into the next couple of hours here. So you want to be very careful once you head out of your door. So were talking on the sidewalks, parking lots as youre walking to your car, even on our roadways. And the reason why is the dangerous ice, again for your overpasses brimdges sidewalks, side streets, very slick and messy. Keep that in mind as youre running your errands and going to church or brunch this morning. Were definitely seeing very very slippery conditions at least until we see our temperatures warming well above freezing. So were just right at the threshold, at 33 degrees with our wind speeds out of the westsouthwest at 3 miles per hour. Throughout the rest of the region, were warming to 35 in northeast philly thats a little bit better but well below freezing in allentown. 35 in Atlantic City and 36 in wildwood. We are going to start to see that ice melting closer to 11 00 a. M. Because our temperatures are warming up. 38 in philly 40 in mill vis. Temperatures will make it into the 40s by 3 00 p. Well talk about that right after the break. Thats right. Thats why we have a first alert in effect for at least the next couple of hours. You want to be very careful if you plan on heading out for church or for breakfast. Take your time on the roads, on the sidewalks, when youre in the parking lots. It is very icy and slippery out. Well have a warmup heading into the afternoon, but im tracking bitter cold conditions back in your sevenday forecast, thats coming up. Right now on nbc 10 news today, it is a first alert weather day. Here is a live look from storm force 10 heading towards bryn mawr on montgomery avenue where dangerous ice may pose a threat to some drivers. Heres a live picture over center city if you can see it. Its foggy and froze opinionnfrozen. Warmer air will melt some of the ice that has formed on the surfaces later today, but it may freeze again by tonight. Welcome back to nbc 10 news today. Im rosemary connors. Its just after 7 30 on this sunday. Meteorologist Brittney Shipp is watching the changes in the forecast. Its sort of ironic because today will be one of the warmest days of the week but weve got a lot of mess to deal with. Thats really why we have another first alert issued for today, into the rest of your morning hours, until our temperatures get well above freezing. Right now, were hovering closer to the freezing mark for a lot of your locations, and ice has formed on top of the slushy and fallen snow so by the time you head out, youre walking on the sidewalks, it is extremely slippery, even if you plan on heading to your car, a lot of the parking lots are very slippery as well so are the roads. So you really want to be careful this morning. As you can see, the rain is starting to taper off, mainly confined to Burlington County salem, Cumberland County central and southern parts of delaware right along the shore but we should be done with this rainfall over the next couple of hours. Even in the past hour or so weve seen the rain taper off in philadelphia. Most of our suburb the Lehigh Valley has seen most of the snow showers taper off as well. Your first alert weather day stays in effect at least throughout the rest of this morning, due to the dangerous ice, overpasses sidewalks, side streets, messy roads, slick roads, those are all concerns for today. Please please be careful. 27 degrees in mt. Pocono. 26 in allentown. 34 in philadelphia. Temperatures are in the mid30s in Atlantic City. But i am tracking a bitter blast of cold air as we head back to work. Ill go over all the details, coming up. Yep, thats the sound that means proceed with caution this morning. Ice and slush is all over the place. Nbc 10 was in logan square just a few hours ago, to capture this scene. Youll want to watch where youre walking and take it easy while driving in this mess. As weve been telling you and warning you, driving can be dangerous, because of the icecovered roads. In fact, earlier this morning, a fire truck slid on the ice and hit a parked car at 24th and brown streets in philadelphias mare mount neighborhood. You can see that there was a thick layer of slush on the street at the time of the accident. Fortunately, though nobody here was hurt. Nbc 10s jesse gary is trying to stay on two feet and avoid a slip and fall this morning. He joins us live from manayunk to show us the conditions there. Reporter the best way to do that is stay off the sidewalk. Im watching people walk up the lane and theyre staying either off to the edge where its more slushy, or right on the street by the curb where its slushy. If you get to the middle of the sidewalk this is all ice. And all through the morning, weve been here talking about how slippery it is. Weve seen two people fall. One gentleman right over here. He slipped and fell back on to his back and backside and one woman up the hill over at larston, she fell face first, did a face plant. Up to bear that in mind when you head out this morning. The tricky part is getting to your vehicle, managing to get through all of this ice, and once you get off the ice into your vehicle, pulling out of a parking space, because your tires could spin a lot, because theres a lot of ice still on the corners of the roads. But once you get on the roads, a lot of salting and plows have been out. It might be a little bit better. Bear that in mind as you make your way around today. Hopefully things will improve. Thank you, jesse. Lets take another live look again from storm force 10. Our photographer tells us that this is orchidxbu way. This is in bryn mawr. You can see on these side streets, away from the main roads, you do have this cover. Youve got the snow youve got the ice, its slushy out there. So, again, if youre headed out today, take your time. No reason to rush. Again, we want to make sure that everybody is safe in these dangerous conditions. The ice is certainly affecting flights at Philadelphia International airport. An airport spokesperson tells us that airlines have canceled about half of the Early Morning arrivals and departures again because of this storm, the aftermath from it. And its tough to believe, but it was 35 years ago today that a group of American College hockey players beat the russians at lake placid which is of course known as the miracle on ice, and this morning we catch up with some of the guys ss who made that happen. And of course tonights the night. The Academy Awards whos likely to win top honors to the red carpet fashion. And well look at what the nominees were doing before they were stars. Rosemary, do you know who is an Ice Cream Truck driver before he hit it big . I dont. Are you going to tell me on the today show or what . You didnt even try you made no effort, rosemary. Ethan hawk . All right. Ethan hawk. Youre on record. Thats my bet. If you get it well bring a prize next week. Well tune in at 8 00 to get the answer. Now lets check in with the folks at meet the press. The immigration debate putting Homeland Security funding at risk will be the focus of discussion on todays show. Chuck todd moderator of meet the press, joins us now live for a preview. Good morning chuck. Good morning, rosemary. Hey, chuck, youll be talking this morning to Homeland Security secretary jay johnson. Radioing itight. Do you think his department will shut down this week . I think its a total unknown. I assume no. I mean here we already have a threat this morning. One of these al qaeda affiliates, this one in somalia making a threat including at the mall of america in the twin cities. So when you have a when were dealing in a week of actual Homeland Security threats, i cant imagine that were going to see Homeland Security funding not happen by the end of the week. That said, the immigration dispute is real. We had that judges ruling which put a halt to the president S Immigration action. Theyre appealing the decision at least to the point theyd like a stay so they can begin implementing it perhaps as early as monday or tuesday this week. How that goes could impact how Congressional Republicans respond. Its complicated, its a lot of Political Bank shots, but it does seem as if all of washington sometimes is not focused on the actual issue threat, which is security at home and of course dealing with isis abroad. Instead, we got caught up in semantics over what to call this threat and then this funding dispute, which in some ways is a side issue as well. On that note president obama, of course just wrapped up hosting a summit on countering violent extremism. Is it a legitimate controversy to debate the president s use or lack of use of the term radical islam . Well i think it is i think its a legitimate debate that were having here on you know, what is isis . Are they is this a strain of islam that is growing, or is it more like a cult . You know think of those Branch Davidians and the david koresh years. Is it Something Like that . So there is a debate going on. But what youll find on meet the press this morning is that when you hear president obamas rhetoric, its going to sound a lot more familiar than maybe folks realize, because its actually very similar to both rhetoric that Vice President cheney and president bush used in the eight years they were in office. This deal of dealing with islam, making sure the mainstream muslim world doesnt believe that the west is trying to engage in a war on islam, that is an issue. All right, chuck todd moderator of meet the press, thank you, chuck. You got it. You can watch chuck todds interview with Homeland Security secretary jay johnson, who will be a featured guest on meet the press this morning. It comes your way at 10 30 right here on nbc 10. The 87th Academy Awards will honor the movie industrys best from the past year. The red carpet is ready at the dalby theater. Eight films are vying for best picture. The theory of everything took home several awards at the Golden Globes but Industry Experts think the competition is mostly between the coming of age tale boyhood and birdman, Michael Keatons film about an actor trying to make a comeback. So i have a feeling that the academy is going to go for boyhood, because its a little bit more of a film that tugs at the heartstrings than birdman. Tonights wild card of course, is the blockbuster, american sniper. It has six nominations, including best picture and best actor for bradley cooper. Any picks . Any thoughts . It is so hard to call it. I know it. Good fimslms all year. I really enjoyed american sniper and boyhood. Im a boyhood person. I think its really cool over 12 years they shot it. Hard to compete with that. On a little bit more of a serious note we want to talk about the weather. Earlier this morning when you came in brittney you said yeah, its slick and slippery but its dangerous out there. It really is. You want to take your time. Foggy conditions out there, were pretty much done with the rain. Temperatures are hovering really close to the freezing mark. So when you step outside, theres a lot of leftover snow theres slush, and weve also seen a thin sheet of ice form on top of the slush. And this is affecting your sidewalks, your side streets, the bridges, the overpasses and so you want to be very very careful as we head into the rest of this morning. Thats going to do it for us for right now. Im rosemary connors. For brittney and everybody else here on nbc 10 well see you right back here at 9 00. Have a good one.
