Not until we spoke to some neighbors on leonard street in northeast philadelphia today did they realize the man that Philadelphia Police and federal authorities, the man they have been looking for all week long up and down the east coast, was, in fact, the same man that carried out a frightening attack on his wife in a home right here behind me nine years ago this month. Former neighbor, jody broder, remembers watching out for Delven Barnes nine years ago. She didnt know his name at the time, instead his face. She knew her neighbor was married but estranged to barnings told her about an aggravated assault. Barnes according to police broke a restraining order and hit in the closet, attacking his estranged wife and her father with a baseball bat. He was released from jail last year. The exwife moved from the leonard street home. She was still shooken up and said she was leaving. She didnt say where she was going. Reporter how frightened of him was she . Oh, extremely. Extremely. To call and have my pit bull come and walk her around the house every day, you know, she was scared. Reporter we also spoke to delvens uncle today to ask if he will be remorseful for his crimes targeting women. Is he remorseful for what hes done with carlesha . When i dialed it, the woman who picked up the phone as soon as i announced who i was, she hung up. Reporter yeah, you know, its an unusual look when you get a group of philadelphia detectives lined up in front of you. Normally when cases are announced their conclusion, its the commissioner or spokesperson or someone from the command staff. Tonight we heard some emotional remarks from one of the detectives on the case. The detective who made a promise to carleshas mother to bring her home alive. Im just glad shes home. Reporter detective jim sloan says he was in Constant Contact with carleshas family every time new video or information was released, he called them. Last night he got to make the call to tell them she was found alive. We were all confident. Thats why we said it. Thats why i said it. I just felt something. Hope. Reporter sloan says when he saw this tape and heard carleshas screams its something i wish i didnt hear. Reporter he knew this was no ordinary case. Sloan and a team of detectives are quick to point out federal partners helped track the vehicle and helped find Surveillance Video and also came up with crucial out of state evidence to track Delven Barnes but said the case wouldnt have gotten the attention it deserved without this man, Dwayne Fletcher who also heard carleshas screams for help. And tonight outside northwest detectives i did ask investigators about reports of barnes confession. They say good, that gives hope to them that perhaps she wont have to go through a trial. Police found him because they were able to track his car. Learned the reason his car had a gps device at all, his lender did not trust him to pay off his car loan. The nbc 10 investigators found Delven Barnes capture may have been in the works since 2002 when he first defaulted on a loan which led him to file bankruptcy.
