Guilty plea for former philly sportscaster Don Tollefson. He admitted today to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from local charities but despite that plea, prosecutors expect even more victims to come forward. Nbc 10s Deanna Durante spoke with key players on both sides of the story. Reporter there are more than 200 people who claim that they have been ripped off and the District Attorney says more call every day claiming to be victims of former sportscaster Don Tollefson. I wanted to thank all of you for respecting my familys privacy. And as the healing process begins, i hope youll continue to do so. It was a statement Don Tollefson made before and after he entered a guilty plea. Hes holding a bible, reading a bible. What do you make of that. Whatever gets you through the day, thats fine with me. Tollefson says come october 10th it will mark a year of sobrie sobriety. Hes been taking drugs for various Mental Health issues. He told the drugs those drugs did not impact a guilty plea today. Tollefson offered sports packages and promised the money to charity. But in the end, prosecutors say tollefson never donated the money and never produced the sports tickets. Now they want him to repay the more than 317,000 they say he stole from his victims. The most notable family, that of Fallen Police officer brad fox. He talks about that it was this drug addiction. Does that make it any better. No. No. It makes it worse. Hes just using that as an excuse, i believe. Tollefson applied for a firsttime Offender Program but that application has been denied. His lawyers are now asking for the next 60 days to prepare for sentencing and confirm since his arrest, tollefson has not made a single restitution payment. Tollefsons Attorney Says with this plea he hopes i had client can avoid jail time but prosecutors say with a maximum of 37 years on the table, they dont see any way around it. They say they do think Don Tollefson will have to serve some time in prison. In doylestown, Deanna Durante, nbc 10 news. A freak accident claimed the life of a worker at the philadelphia zoo this morning. The man was killed after a heavy duty golf cart fell off a jack and landed on top of him. Skyforce 10 over the scene here over the garage where this happened. Officials tell us a coworker found the victim after he failed to show up to a regular 10 00 a. M. Meeting. The spokesperson for the zoo tells us the 59yearold worker was a longtime mechanic who maintained the zoos fleet of golf carts. We have this just in to nbc 10. Walmart says comedian tracy morgan and his other passengers werent wearing seat belts when their limo bus was rear ended by a walmart truck in june. In a court file being, the company says thats what led to his injuries. The accident in Cranberry Township killed his friend and writing partner. Morgans legal team has said walmart was negligent because the retail jean the should have known their driver had been awake for more than 24 hours. The couple were unable to escape their somerset county, new jersey home sunday morning. Neighbors called 911 to report a fire. Sheridan was a prominent the figure inc new jerseys hope industry. Members of an Atlantic City synagogue are on edge this evening after the rabbis suv erupted in flames outside the temple on rosh hashanah. Firefighters were called to the scene around 2 00 thursday morning. Witnesses told them they saw people earlier near the suv. The fire still in the early stages of being investigated. Police say they are not ruling out the possibility that this was a hate crime. The centers for Disease Control and prevention is asking local doctors now to be vigilant, they say signs of muscle weakness coupled with breathing problems could lead to extreme complications. Its gotten really bad really fast. She says her daughter didnt seem that sick at first but that changed last night when the 18monthold started coughing and wheezing. Was getting worried. Reporter shes worried about enterovirus, a severe respiratory disease that slammed children across the u. S. Federal Health Officials are investigating if its linked to a cluster of poliolike symptoms. Nine developed paralysis or limb weakness. Four had enterovirus d68. Theyre going to have to do a broader investigation. Reporter local pediatrician dr. Carolyn clear says the enterovirus family includes the disease polio but the strain thats hitting kids now does not typically cause paralysis. I would say its a rare complication. Reporter we checked with Health Officials in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware, all say there are no reports of paralysis or limb weakness in the children with enterovirus in our area. Nevertheless, the cdc advised local doctors to contact them if they treat anyone under the age of 21 with sudden limb weakness. Dr. Clear believes its possible an entirely new disease is brewing. I would say anythings possible but unfortunately it will fake some time and investigation until they can mac a statement about that for sure. From our Delaware Bureau this evening, a new push to crack down on people who text behind the wheel. For the first time ever, dover police are dedicating an entire team of officers just to target drivers who are texting or talking without using handsfree devices. Both are illegal in delaware. Police say distracted driver led to more than 140 crashes in the state last year, including dozens of injuries and three deaths. A vigil is being held tonight to bring attention to blind spots for buses, comes in the wake of a deadly accident involving a septa bus in south philadelphia.
