It was topic one today at the white house. Today, we learned Chris Christie is sending 100 state troopers and civilians to help keep the peace and investigate. They will leave in about an hour. Pennsylvania state police have also offered their assistance. 20 Police Officers have been injured in those protests more than 200 people have been arrested. Tonight in an effort to calm the violence, a curfew is going into effect. Nbc 10s Rosemary Conners is monitoring developments. That curfew will start at 10 00 this evening and last until 5 00 in the morning. A very different mood in baltimore today from what we saw yesterday when that fire storm erupted. Many residents are now coming together to pick up the pieces. Neighbors in baltimore tackled the cleanup today armed with brooms shovels and trash bags. A countereffort to the protesters who threw bricks rocks and bottles at Police Yesterday and left the city littered looted and burned. Were not going to have at repeat of what happened last night. Its not going to happen tonight. Today, we are baltimore, resilient people about to rise from the ashes and move forward to rebuild and turn the page for a new chapter. Jamal bryant who delivered the eulogy at freddie grays funeral yesterday insists the riots do not reflect the movement to get answers and justice in grays death. He died while in Police Custody earlier this month. President obama says the federal government is now investigating. As for the violence and destruction in baltimore, today the president called those responsible thugs. That is not a protest. That is not a statement. Its people a handful of people taking advantage of a situation for their own purposes and they need to be treated as criminals. Heartbreaking. Despite heavy hearts, crowds still gathered in the streets today, some scuffled with law enforcement. This as police assure the community they are equipped to keep the peace tonight and yesterdays response evolved as the protests progressed. We can tell you that our other crews have seen the plane involved in all of this being towed away from the runway. But for hundreds of other people right now trying to take off from Philadelphia International airport, the damage is already done as this airport operates without its full runway capacity. From sky force 10 a few minutes ago, you could see the immediate aftermath of this Emergency Landing with passengers. This is actually sky force after the scene. We can tell you that united 4882 was carrying 75 different people. Thats passengers and crew en route from raleigh to newark. It was diverted here to Philadelphia International as it landed, were told engine number two was on fire on that express jet. Our chopper did see earlier one person being taken away from the scene on a stretcher, but airport spoke people tell us that all passengers were evacuated safely from this plane. The very latest information that were getting from the airport is that those passengers are being now bussed back into the terminal where they will figure out a next step. As we come back out here live we can tell you that airport operations, were being told are slowly getting back to normal. Although, obviously, the cleanup of runway 27l will take some time. And what youre seeing right now in the live pictures from the ground is the backlog that is created for other passengers who are trying to take off from Philadelphia International. And thats why the feds looked at camden. But i can tell you, they had stiff competition beating out 36 other states and 123 other applications to earn this distinction. It is a promise. Today, im thrilled to announce that camden new jersey is one of eight communities across the nation selected by hud as a new promise zone. Reporter to change the landscape in camden from Graduation Rates to preventing teen pregnancy to creating jobs. Talk is cheap. What weve seen is actual change. Hud regional administrator holly leight says that other cities named as promise zones last year took advantage of over 100 million in federal funding. New at 5 00 bird flu fears on the rise after officials discovered new outbreaks at nearly half dozen Poultry Farms in iowa. The virus has now infected more than 15 million birds across 13 states making it one of the largest outbreaks in u. S. History. Its important to note, though, tonight. No birds in pennsylvania, new jersey or delaware have tested positive for the disease. But the concern for local farmers is very real and precautions are being taken. They can spread avian flu in the midwest, millions of chickens and turkeys have been slaughtered to stop the spread of a major outbreak. We do this every day, this is what we do. Cleaning up a city in crisis today. New jersey governor Chris Christie is sending 150 state troopers, enlisted personnel, and civilians to help keep the peace in baltimore. A curfew remains in effect from 10 00 tonight until 5 00 tomorrow morning. And the Baltimore Orioles will play at home against the white sox tomorrow. But in an empty stadium. That is a first for a Major League Baseball game. And the philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter supports baltimores response of the riots yesterday saying its difficult to prepare for a, quote, wild card. You dont always completely know what folks are going to do. But as the police chief said last night, they have been monitoring social media. We monitor social media as we should on a regular basis and try to anticipate and try to mobilize our post. Nutter says philadelphias prepared for any rioting, looting and vandalism that may flare up during protests. Making sure the city is prepared is what mayor nutter and Police CommissionerCharles Ramsey have been working on. Theyve been talking about the importance of Police Community to bridge the gap between police and those they protect. Thatll be a key responsibility for philadelphias next mayor. He had a captive audience on that subject as people are tuned into coverage of the riots in baltimore. Theres a better way to solve our problems. And tearing down our neighborhood and hurting other people williams stressed the importance of intervention programs. Another candidate told us accountability for police is key for showing the public that the system is fair. We have a lot of mistrust in the Police Department. And i would bring back community policing. He wants to create a civilian review board with subpoena power. Jim kenny says his heart breaks for baltimore. And this kind of unrest could be prevented with a Police Department that respects the citizens. We need to look at ourselves in many ways as to how we dont serve people in the appropriate way and were not just to every segment of our society. Many of the people burning buildings and looting are taking advantage of what should be a serious discussion on policing. She says leaders need to be available and transparent. We are ready to make sure that we serve you and serve you well and faithfully. Thats the right way to prevent these things from even occurring. We have new information on a deadly crash in Montgomery County. Crews are working to reopen this damaged road by tomorrow mornings rush hour. Sky force 10 was over the aftermath of yesterdays crash on south park avenue in the section of lower providence township this morning. It is still shut down this afternoon. Two 18 wheelers crashed there early yesterday morning. One drive was killed when that accident created a fire as well as the chemical leak. Investigators say the trailer detached from one of the trucks and slammed into the other. One truck was hauling sewage. The other was loaded with a material used in cosmetics. And it has not been easy to clean up. It has a very very waxy type of texture, consistency. And that texture is exacerbated when its wet. She testified she saw a man in body armor slip through the door and fill it with tear gas as he fired into the audience. Her husband was shot in the eye. Defense attorneys say that james holmes has, quote, essentially admitted to killing 12 people and injuring 70 more. Hes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. But all the moisture down around the southeast, thats what well be watching to eventually organize into a coastal storm, a potential noreaster. But it should be staying south of the area. So heres what future weather shows tonight, tomorrow. We stay dry. Tomorrow, were going to be warmer than today, too. Then we watch that area of low pressure off the carolina coast by thursday evening just to our south. So thursday we do have a chance for showers still. More of an onshore wind. And we go into friday. Well be a little cooler that chance of rain mostly south of philadelphia. There you see the area of low pressure, better organized as it moves away. But rain mostly south by friday. And then over the weekend, we start to clear out, the dry air starts to move in. And especially as we go into sunday, just in time for the blue cross broad street run. For tonight, though mostly clear, less wind around. 50 for the low in philadelphia 43 north and west. Tomorrow mostly sunny, warmer day than today, 72 to 75 degrees for the afternoon. And then we go into the blue cross broad street run sunday morning, 8 00 in the morning, expect sunshine temperatures around the mid 50s by 9 00 in the morning, 58 degrees, looking at mostly sunny skies. By 10 00, 62 degrees, fairly lighter with those wind speeds, too. So if you are running or atend attending the race its going to be good weather just in time. Thursday and friday the chance of showers thursday rain mostly to the south friday. But the temperatures drop back down into the upper 50s. Today the company broke ground on the new 170 million plant in new castle. The plant will bring in 250 construction jobs and 30 fulltime positions when it opens in two years. How about this the department of Environmental Protection is asking Police Departments to back off when it comes to bear sightings. Should police be responding in force when environmental Officials Say they should just be left alone . What we saw in patterson monday night in the chase of this black bear falls on the police side. It started in this Riverside Park where more than 100 people were crowding this soccer field. You want the police here . Yeah. I feel t want the bears here in patterson . Basically, no. He ordered the troops sent in here. If we didnt send the police officer, imagine if a child was mauled. In a statement, though the d. E. P. Told us quote, a bear simply passing through an area and not causing a specific problem should be left alone. People should allow the bear to continue on its way. Bears can be dangerous, one attack killed a hiker last year in west milford. And not far away the bear population in northwest new jersey is the densest in the u. S. According to the d. E. P. At least in patterson, police will respond when bears are near people. Theyre not used to a bear here in the city of patterson. So, you know, the immediate perception and mindset is theyre in danger. The d. E. P. Admits its message to leave them alone is hard one to get across. Then it says the increase in the bears population and range in this state is why its proposing a dramatic expansion in the hunting season starting next year. Take your trash out on trash day, not the night before. Also eliminate easy to reach bird feeders and clean that outdoor grill. Emergency landing. An Emergency Landing at Philadelphia International airport. Passengers were evacuated, left stranded by the runway. Fire trucks surrounded the plane, showering it with foam. Were told one of the engines overheated in midair forcing the pilot to land as soon as possible. Sky force 10 was overhead as passengers made their way to the grass after they rushed that that plane. That plane was United Express flight 4882 taken off from raleigh, durham north carolina. It was on the way to newark new jersey when it made the Emergency Landing around 4 00 this afternoon. The airline now says the cockpit got a warning that one of the engines was overheating. That engine was shut down. Take a look right here youre going to see someone being taken away from the plane on a stretcher. The airport says that person has a history of heart problems. He had chest pains during the incident and paramedics took him to the hospital to be checked out. And take a look at this.
