The temperatures are marginal, right on the edge of the Freezing Point in allentown, pollstown, reading, mt. Holly, even Atlantic City. The temperatures will drop a little bit. We have nightfall. We have moisture on some of the roads from the snow. So we may very well have some icy spots. Some of them could even be in delaware where the temperatures are marginal and even south jersey where it is 32 in milville and Atlantic City. The temperature is not going to drop rapidly, but just a little bit is enough. Side roads, bridges, overpasses, your sidewalks, for example. It is still snowing now, and for much of the day on rural roads, the only vehicles you may have seen were stormforce 10 and the plow trucks. This was the noreaster that just kept going and going. In berks county, the 3 inches of snow was just enough, again. I came out, you know, doing what i was supposed to do, just shovel. Reporter a Brandywine School district bus got stuck on a hill after dropping off kids when schools closed early. And just across the street, sean martins car slid off a road hes traveled many times. Usually never this bad. Honestly, i was expecting once i got into fredericksville that it would be a lot better. Com. Guilty of murdering a Philadelphia Police officer. This afternoon a jury convicted rafael jones of firstdegree murder in the shooting death of officer moses walker jr. Prosecutors say jones gunned down the officer during a robbery gone bad in august 2012. The deadly confrontation unfolded on a north philadelphia street. Jones violated his parole and should have been in the jail of walkers murder. Officer walker was in street clothes and had just finished working an overnight shift when he was killed. Delaware police are searching for a man they said took off during a traffic stop that produced nearly 1,000 baggies of heroin. Officers say 27yearold Joshua Smallwood ran after they pulled him over on eighth street in new castle yesterday afternoon. He left behind his car and passenger by the name of rachel mahan. Police searched her and found 983 baggies of heroin in her purse. See it lined up there on the table. Authorities charged her with possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia. In some instances, we simply failed to live up to the standards that we set for ourselves. Reporter on a big issue, whether torture worked to get osama bin lauden, brennan called the eits for enhanced interrogation techniques and brennan was in the situation room as a white house adviser the night the s. E. A. L. S killed the al qaeda leader. Brennan said information from tortured detainees was used, but he said it is not clear that torture was necessary. The cause and effect relationship between the use of eits and useful information subsequently provided by the detainee is, in my view, unknowable. Reporter that echos the white house. What is knowable is that brennan now is in good graces at the white house where aides today said president obama has full confidence in brennan to keep heading the embattled cia. Theres yet another Government Shutdown showdown brewing tonight on capitol hill. And a bipartisan spending bill hanging in the balance. The government technically runs out of money at midnight tonight. And with less than serve hoven to go congress is debating the 1. 1 trillion spending bill. Democrats dont like the idea. It loosens Campaign Finance rules and wall street regulations. Tea Party Republicans dont like the idea, either, that the bill doesnt try to block president obamas recent moves on immigration. Now, the president plans to sign the bill if it reaches his desk. That we believe this compromise proposal merits bipartisan support on capitol hill and hopefully will arrive on the president s desk in the next few days and he if it does, he will sign it. If the spending bill makes it to the president s desk and he signs it, the legislation would fund nearly the entire government through the end of the budget year next september. Interestingly, tucked into the 1. 1 trillion spending bill is a victory for the potato. Under the bill, lowincome women would be able to pay for the potatoes with local government subsidized vouchers. The women, infants and Children Nutrition program or wic issues these vouchers. It currently excludes potatoes from items purchased with the vouchers but the new spending bill would change that. Its something the potato industry has aggressively lobbied for. And then to this. Ending homelessness for veterans by the end of 2015. Its a goal set by the department of veterans affairs. The question, though, becomes, but how will they do it . Today, several local homeless shelters and advocacy groups testified in front of the House Veterans Affairs committee in washington. Its a deeper look at successes and failures in an effort to reach that goal. The challenge is finding appropriate levels of housing so matching veterans to the appropriate level of care and shelter that is safe, and then what Services Needs to be wrapped around these individuals. Some of the groups say theres a need for more stable and affordable housing. Others point to the need for Mental Health and addiction treatment. Breaking news from skyforce 10. As we go through later tonight, well see a lot of the snow coming to the end. Weve seen snow coming to an end, but some of you are still seeing at least light snow or flurries around. As we go through tonight, temperatures are going to continue to drop, so we will have icy spots on untreated roadways. Just be ae waware of that. We have drier weather ahead. Finally after we go through tonight, and into tomorrow, we start to set up for a drier pattern. And this does go all the way through the weekend. Yesterday when we showed this, the flags were blowing a lot more than they are now. Its not as windy at the moment. Winds near 15 miles an hour. Feels more like 25 degree in philadelphia. Actual temperature is 34 degrees. North and west, we are at freezing. Allentown, reading, pottstown, coming in at 32 degrees. Same thing, mt. Holly. Mid 20s up in the poconos. 33 in westchester. These are the areas where we saw snow today, wet roadways. We have freezing temperatures. Be careful as youre driving. We could see icy spots develop. 32 millville and Atlantic City. Freezing temperatures through south jersey and delaware where we had the band of snow moving down. We have the wind out. Its feeling about 10 degrees colder. So everyones feeling like the mid 20s except the poconos feeling like 18 degrees there. So its still a little breezy outside. Satellite and radar showing us mainly where the snow is right now. So we are seeing some light snow showers around the trenton area. The i95 corridor. Again, this is very light. We dont expect anything heavy forming but through parts of bucks county, we have seen pretty consistent light snowfall and, again, this should not be accumulating much, but it is enough to fall on the roadways and cause pretty slippery conditions in some areas. As we look into parts of chester also montgomery county, a little bit of light snow here. Well continue to watch this as we go through the next few hours. A lot of this will be coming to an end. And heres the noreaster. If you remember a couple days ago we were talking about it. Same exact system that caused all the flooding at the shore. And this is still the same system thats bringing us snow showers tonight. So as we go through the next few hours, snow showers kind of come to an end by 11 00 p. M. Tonight. We should be mostly dry. Again, icy spots possible, too. Then as we go into tomorrow, we start to see more drying, but up in the poconos we could see a few flurries at least. Silver bells reporter silver bells, a classic winter song, months in the making for these seventh and eighth graders at Indian Valley middle school. I pulled the song silver bells out last year after our spring concert. They sounded good with it. When we came back in the fall, they started right on it. Reporter the choir 150 students strong won second place in this years more f. M. Holiday choir competition. I was so excited. We were here actually in a select choir rehearsal and all got the news and were jumping up and down and screaming. Reporter for those students who have been here before, its still new. Ive done it two years in a row, so i kind of know what its like, but we havent gotten this far so its really exciting opportunity. Reporter what do they plan to do with the 2,000 in prize money . With the money mercedesbenz is giving us, we were thinking about buying portable sound equipment we can use when we go into the community to sing. Reporter their principal, also a music buff, wants the community to see and hear his students. Its important to get it out in front of the public to see the kinds of things are happening at schools, the kind of quality the kids are able to put out and able to do. Controversy over a holiday cartoon tonight. See in a drawing a group of africanamerican children asking santa to protect them from police. The cartoon was published in sundays Bucks County Courier Times. Police from philadelphia and some suburbs are demanding an apology now. Disgrace. Its just a low blow. Not only to the police officers, but to the families of those who g gave their lives for the cartoon to defame the memories of those officers. Its a disgrace. The Bucks County Courier Times tells nbc 10 the cartoon was printed to highlight the need for race relation discussions. If they knew some people would consider it offensive, the newspaper would not have published it. Happening right now, several blocks of the main drag in a delaware town are blocked. The remains of this weeks noreaster are still bringing in scattered and brief bursts of snow. And the colder it gets tonight, the greater the threat of that snow making streets and sidewalks slick. Well, tonight depending where you are, temperatures will drop below freezing for anyone, but if your roadways are wet from a lot of the snow we saw falling today, that may cause icy spots on the untreated surfaces. Now were seeing a few snow showers around, but not as much as we had earlier today. A lot of this is really dying out. Through parts of bucks county, were still seeing some very light snow showers and this should be ending soon. Around new hanover, east coventry township, near reading, across 176, honeybrook also seeing pretty light snow showers or in some cases around the area just some snow flurries. Temperature wise, though, we are at freezing areas north and west. Even through parts of south jersey, even some areas in delaware. 32 degrees Atlantic City. Millville, allentown, even pottstown. We could certainly be seeing some more icing as we go through this evening. T temperatures will stay around freezing in the philadelphia area. Reporter you know, actually theyre doing a pretty good job. With that being said, im not sitting in the inconvenience on the outskirts of the downtown area. See whats going on. Only vehicles getting by on main street are fire trucks, motorcycles. The big trucks with Wreaths Across America try geing ready to start their ceremony. This is surely inconvenient for many but the town thought this cause was totally worth it. Nobody is upset over it i dont think. Reporter they call him chopper charlie because hes been chopping hair here on main street for about five decades. Hes happy the town closed down a few blocks of main street tonight to let Wreaths Across America parade through to leave a wreath at the town memorial. I think its going to make the traffic difficult in town. Reporter that guy is right. This is the only east west shoot through middletown. Its bad every night. Shutting down the road makes it extra bad for rush hour commuters, including those getting to the massive amazon facility here. Deldot are doing their thing. Middletown wants to do their thing. A few doors down, the cake shop says its good for them in their quest to make the world a better place one cupcake at a time. Main street should reopen to traffic at around 7 00 tonight. A town higher up told me its an honor for the town to be a stop from maine to arlington cemetery. An update on the body cameras some Philadelphia Police officers are now testing. More than two dozen officers in north philadelphias 22nd district are now wearing the cameras. Theyre testing six different models and brands to see what works best. Officers who volunteered to test the cameras told us they notice a difference when they wear them. Weill become a lot more pole to police. As soon as i advise them that theyre getting audio, visually recorded, if theyre angry, it kind of kind of mellows them out. Today Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey revealed more officers will soon start wearing the cameras. Scared, lonely, and longing for his family. Thats how a lawyer describes a 10yearold boy imprisoned in an adult jail. The boy is accused of killing a 90yearold helen novak two months ago in northeastern pennsylvania. The boys mother said the child lost his temper when novak snapped at him. She says the boy grabbed a cane, put it around novaks throat and began punching her. The boys lawyers are trying to get his case moved to juvenile court. A burglar tries to get into a home on south percy street in south philly and its all caught on tape. This was thanksgiving night. He tries to get in twice. During his second attempt, hes confronted by the resident who just returned home. If you recognize the person in this video, call police. And in new jersey, eight people in custody after a drug bust by federal, state, and local police. Early morning raids at Atlantic City went smoothly until the last suspect barricaded himself inside the home for hours. He finally gave up. The eight are accused of trafficking heroin, cocaine, and crack. Happening now, marching to mass. Local hispanic catholics are making their way to center city to celebrate las mana etas. Parishioners from philadelphias catholic churches will march together through the neighborhoods. Archbishop Charles Chaput will celebrate a mass complete with mariachi music and traditional serenade. The Cheltenham School board brought back a former administrator to monitor its current controversial superintendent. Exsuperintendent William Kiefer will keep tabs on Natalie Thomas performance. Parents, teachers and staff have questioned thomas leadership. Thomas has also battled with the Teachers Union and administrators. Kiefer served as district superintendent from 2006 to 2010. Nbc 10 asked how much kiefer is getting paid and the board told nbc 10 the issue is a personnel matter, so it would not comment on kiefers salary. We have good news for delaware. Infants and toddlers, and, of course, their parents. Nbc 10 at wilmingtons Latin American Community center where governor markell read books and hung out with kids at the la fiesta childcare center. Centers will benefit from a 5. 5 million federal grant designed to give low income families more access to Early Childhood Development Programs like the one here. The center will use the money to expand current programs. We do dual language learning and costs 66,000 a year. So that helps. Yes, it does. Some cases the money means lower income delaware families wont have to pull their kids out of programs like this if mom or dad loses their job. All right. Three local nonprofits will share 100,000. Its grant money from nbc universals 21st century solutions. The groups caught the attention of nbc 10 because of their unique innovations. The Enchantment Theater Company is the winner of 25,000. A play performed by the Enchantment Theater Company. Much to the delight of about 10,000 school kids around our area. The show was part of the groups enchantment everywhere program. The Theater Company carries a play lock, stock and barrel into schools. I wish to be ruler of the universe. Reporter principal robert of meade elementary in north philadelphia thinks theater may be the norm for some School Districts but drastic budget cuts make it impossible for her to hire actors and sets to show her prek through aieighth graders. Enchantment everywhere comes to schools for free. You can hear a pin drop in the auditorium. Reporter live theater stimulates the imagination and sets children up for success according to enchantments artistic directors landis and jennifer smith. We do it in an unusual way with puppets, masks, original dance, original music and video projection. Any way that we can tell a story, we use that to bring stories to life. They kind of can with the actors go through this experience and it takes them somewhere. Part of it is for their humanity, to grow as individuals, and also to see possibilities. Well, were still tracking at least some snow showers across the area. Compared to what we had earlier today, though, they almost just look like snow flurries or just very light snow. Thats kind of coming to an end. So the snow will continue to end across the area as we go through tonight. And then we also have some icy spots developing on untreated roadways. The snow earlier today in some cases, many cases was melting on the roadways. So now we have wet roads and now we have temperatures dropping below freezing. So be very careful as youre driving. Still some very light snow showers, or just snow flurries. But for the most part, we don , expect heavy snow tonight, however, were watching this area of snow right around harrisburg.
